I chose 0.75 seconds as ideal for games, etc. You just have to be able to predict where the subject will be at that time, and 0.75 seconds worked for me. As a real-time example, I took an action shot just now of racing a car after a starting line 20th position, accelerating down the line at 175 mph, just before a right-hand turn. Predicting that in 0.75 seconds I’d be too mentally busy with braking, turning and traffic on my right side to take a screen shot without careening into the concrete barrier, I took the Assistive Touch snap to show that the icon disappears when the screenshot takes place. And, at just 40% opacity, the icon is barely noticeable and it doesn’t provide a distraction to you at all in use. Just like driving in real life, distractions can kill you. Editor's Note: Ah ha George! A screen recording would have captured the icon for you :-). So far, every App that I use has worked fine with this feature. Long enough to avoid an accidental press and short enough to think ahead of where that action was to take place, like a game or an App action. The main limitation for most of us in typing into a computer is that we are not trained touch typists. At best we may be able to type with two to four fingers. This becomes more limiting as we get older particularly with our iDevices and the keys becoming more difficult to accurately manipulate due to their size and possibly our deteriorating eyesight or arthritic fingers.

Starting from just two of us, the User Group built up to over 650 members through hard work and fun-filled times, and at one point even having Claris and Adobe both at one of our meetings. Lots of handout at that meeting. Mentions of the Boston Mac Expo trips and the software vendor boat trips with music and dancing around Boston for User Group Leaders. Tee-Shirt handouts by the dozens at vendor booths, freebie Mac and Apple II goodies for the asking, bags of them taken home for the members. Great software and I owned, tested and wrote reviews about all of it. And all the games!

I remember writing about the 1988 H-P Scanner, weighing just 22.8 pounds, that cost $1,495 with the Mac interface costing another $495 U.S. That was when the Apple Laserwriter was selling for $6,995 U.S. and an Adobe Font FACE was selling for $200. I remember that because I installed two for a Dealer. Pagemaker 1 and Photoshop 1 were top dog then, with lots of fighting for Mac Paint programs like SuperPaint going on. Everybody wanted a piece of Apples’ MacPaint! Then there was Mitsubishi introducing their(1988) 37-inch color HiRes Monitor, with 640 x 480 lines of color! That was over 2-1/2 times larger than the current 25-inch large screen monitor. The cost was only $8,000 and weighed in at 286 pounds! “Without the Base.” And so it was with the hardware at that time.

Reaching the membership of over 50 required a Newsletter, so I started one; then when the Group went over 300, the News- letter grew to over 32 pages, but there were no writers other than myself and an 1988 occasional random who wrote under threat of personal harm (hey, whatever works!) At one point I just started writing under a contributing pseudonym as a member.

That worked, so I created another, and another, and ...you get the point. To get into the feeling of that contributor, I’d put on a lumberjack shirt for Pierre Emile Le Dieux, my sometime Trapper in Moody, Maine, who trapped in his northern camp near a PC-owning trapper named Crooked Leg Papadeux, who had a watch bear named Old Yellow Tooth. These two coots argued all the time over the merits of Macs and PC’s. My wife would hear my arguments between the two as I was typing them out downstairs. I really got into the characters I was writing about, even the English/French Canadian verbiage, Eh?

Then I had Titus LaFarge and Omar Reilly in Sissquat, Maine, who didn’t get much technical input up there, being a little behind in Newspapers, don’t ya see. They started getting a little ner- vous when younger folk started talking about UNIX. They believed that them UNIX fellers can’t reproduce like normal folk, ‘cause they were ‘fixed’, don’t ya see. Just ask Clara-Jean Wiskert, the Post Mistress. She knows about all them people. Whew!

Ralph was a SAC B-52 pilot who got his first Mac 128 and bought (3) 400k Floppy disks. Then he met me, and bought (4) boxes (the next week). Then I gave him a copy of ResEdit, my 1st mis- take! Because of his untiring molestation of the Mac’s OS, he got the nickname of ‘the Mac Mo- lester’. His story was “... the origin of the self-immolation of the Mac’s self OS destruction phobia Early type designer is shrouded in the dim light of the Mac beginnings, and has been passed down from generation to generation. As far back as the Mac 128, there were mysterious stories, wrought with intrigue, about those who had tried ResEdit and were never heard from again. It was Satan’s work! If anyone used it and survived, they were greeted with... “yeah, fine for you, but I’ve got a wife and children.” Historians have traced back through time to the original ‘backup’ and believe that the dreaded ResEdit was its creator! True story, that! Yet, there were naysayers - those who

www.ausom.net.au AUSOM News September 2020 v 49 Contents tried it and ‘bombed’, again and again, and finally succeeded. They left the Mac User Group and formed a Mac Coven, which exists to this day”.

Harry Phontmangler got his nickname because he just had to have every font face that came out, and once True Type came out, all bets were off! I’d get calls all hours of the morning and night. He just HAD to try that font face out, whether it was tested or not. Apple’s Font/DA Installer got a real workout with Harry. He wrote good Font articles, though. He was heav- en-blessed when Adobe’s Laserwriter Postscript fonts and Open-Type came out. I think they took him to a Home, if you get my drift. I almost miss him!I needed a hard-hitting character for the latest hints and tips about the Mac News scene, so I created Scoop Jackson, who was a beer-swilling, chain-smoking, take no prisoners, killer of the headlines. He would never mince words, or typewriter keys. Went through a keyboard a month. Articles always short. To the point. Always in a staccato fashion. One after another. Ten, twenty items, blasting away. What a guy. Late at night, Arlene would hear Scoop and I, chat- ting away over donuts and coffee and a keyboard; always a keyboard at the ready. I miss him too, and his banged up fedora I would wear with him and the keyboard.

The hammer of our group of writers was Ivar Thorenson, the geek- iest of the geeks, who knew the innards of all the Apple stuff and could piggyback a 128K’s Ram chips to make them into a 512K Mac Plus. He even made a dozen Mac 512k’s before Apple did. In fact, the Mac Molester got his first one. I still have Ivar’s 128K schematics (never from Apple Computer!) Here’s a copy I saved all these years. Ivar was our Mac Savant who brooked no nonsense in the Mac scene. He kept us all straight. Technical articles came from him, and all hardware review articles ran past Ivar.

Lastly, the queen savant of our group was Phoebe Denquiste. When Arlene was missing one of her hats and lady scarf, she knew where to look. Phoebe was our ‘wordsmith’ of the group. She had that talent of speaking out to the women of our group, understanding the needs and wants of the gender regarding software and how to do things, the feminine way. She described childrens needs of software that no man could. Needlepoint, cross-stitching, cooking software, etc; all fell under her domain. Woe be to those who used language un-befitting the article that she proof- read. She wielded humorous prose that no one else could. She was more than a woman; she was a Lady first! We all missed her when she moved away to a rolling farmland that she always wanted, to be near her ailing husband and children. A sweet- heart to talk to and a lending ear when needed. The members really missed her. I still talk to her occasionally.

These were my writers who I depended on, and when we all met for a writers discussion in my computer room in the base- ment, it drove Arlene near to a disaster. She was missing so many of her clothes!

On one issue of my Newsletter, I had all seven writers, plus myself, that wrote articles. Compliments from the members on the articles and letters to the Editor thought we had lots of talented writers. With the exception of those screwballs up north Titus and Omar, but they were funny, and then that wackadoodle Pierre, who they could hardly understand anyway. But their Mac/PC controversies started lots of discussions in the Group, so there’s that!

As I mentioned to Pam and Monty, writing with different Non De Plumes could be taxing, changing costumes while writing to keep my characters writing in style. Yes, I did, for each character! At one point, I had a member criticize this Editor for allowing one of my personages to allow errors in proper verbiage. They used the writings of Phoebe to contrast the writings of another of my writers! They liked Phoebe for her good writing, feminine good taste and humorous prose-like style. They even wanted me, the Editor, to take notes and learn from her in my own writing! Good grief!

I used all this to my own advantage, of course, and had all my writers chime in, in their own way, especially Ivar Thorenson, my techie, who finally crushed all in his path. That lasted a good six months of controversy, what with all the ‘Letters to the Editor’, whether real or imagined that took place. Even my fake ‘Letter’ contributors helped to stoke the fires a bit.

All eight of me had a great time! It was great to be the Editor! george engel for ausom

George M Engel What makes a Good Photo? [email protected] Part 4- Emotive

Why are bunnies, kittens, puppies and baby pictures so popular on the Web? They’re so Emotive! They bring out the mothering and fathering in us all. You want to cuddle and pro- tect them. They’re so precious! A good photographer (all of us reading this) will attempt to bring this out in their photo. Spot and create the scene in your mind, the emotion of it, frame it, and then slowly press the shutter button, again and again. Always more than one for that perfect scene (hope- fully capturing that one perfect frame). Like, capturing my Grand-daughter above, now that she’s preparing for college. Maybe, for a future blackmail ransom photo?

Now for something different! In 1985, National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry was unknowingly about to take the most famous photo that has ever graced their magazine. This was the ‘Afghan girl’, no name, that has been the most asked-for reprint in their history. Those haunted eyes kept coming up to the Editors, and finally made it to their June ‘85 cover. For 17 years, people were continually asking ‘what ever happened to her?’ Finally, an expedition was initiated by National Geographic and Steve.

The story unfolded: In 1985, when the Russians invaded their Afghanistan, this Pashtun ‘Afghan girl’ watched her parents die. Her Grandmother shep- herded all 5 children to Pakistan, hiding in caves to avoid Russian planes and bombs day and night. Reaching a Pakistan refugee camp with millions of other refugees, they waited for years until the Russians left. This is where Steve found this girl with the haunted eyes. He was able to take her picture before she was old enough to hide behind a Burkha.

Now, the final story! Seventeen years later, in 2002, and a long time tracing villagers, she was locat- ed back in Afghanistan, a six hour drive and three hour trek to her village. She’s never allowed without a burkha, but her husband listened to the story and allowed one picture of her unveiled face. No one, other than her husband, has ever seen her smile! That’s the way it is in their culture!

Even her only brother has seen her smile once! Once! At her wedding! They wanted an FBI facial analyst and an Iris Computer Expert on hand to agree that this was the girl. They all agreed that this was the girl, Sharbat Gula, who has three children. She doesn’t understand what all the hoohah is about. She says ‘Life goes on.’ Today, only her husband sees her true face.

I still have both National Geographic magazines in front of me while I’m writing this. When I look at the first cover, those eyes haunt me still. I can see what Steve McCurry saw when he took that photo. This young girl that saw death, starvation, brutal war, and freezing cold, begging blankets and food, living in caves with her brothers and sisters, not knowing if they were going to be alive the next day. This is what he captured in those 10-11 year-old eyes! This is what I mean by Emotive- Soul Inspiring and Captivating

www.ausom.net.au AUSOM News September 2020 v 51 Contents For a different emotion this time, it’s about three sisters meeting once every three or four years. They kind of go wild when their hus- bands aren’t around, of course, but to catch them in the act is near impossible. Remember the ‘cheese’ factor? So, as they’re watching me fiddle with my camera, I’m telling them to get closer to fit in the picture.

While the one on the right and Arlene in the middle kind of fit together, the left-most sister is having a little problem. As you can see, this gets a little hysterical and I’m lucky enough to get that picture I really wanted and treasure. This is what a real Sis- ter moment is about! I’m giggling right now writing about it, as I’m remembering the scene in my mind. Emotive - humor/free spirit.

Next, whenever I feel emotion like what’s happening about me, like this Covid-19 Virus thing, I need to step back and relax my body, both men- tally and physically. It even works when I’m going to sleep or taking a nap. Normally, I do this at night and start sleeping within five minutes or so.

Arlene thinks I’m weird, but I mentally picture a scene that’s very soothing to me; and I have several that I can call upon. One of them is this scene of a time that we were on a family vacation of the ‘Three Sisters Cruise’ and we rented a Cabana for the day. The reserved chaise lounge chairs were shaded; the sand was warm, the breeze was warm and steady, and the music relaxing. Dozing in the shade, all your problems, thousands of miles away. The food smells were wafting though the air, people playing in the surf, the waves rythmically lapping the beach... It’s easy to mentally picture this scene in my mind. And so to sleep! Do you have any scenes like this in your mind? Happy thoughts? Emotive - Warm and Sleepy moments.

This last Photo is more about composition and technique, as well as an emotion like the above. I’ll point this out with my little red arrows. Note on the right that by the ‘rule of thirds’ (another lesson later on) 1/3 is sky and 2/3 is water; water being one of the dominant features of the photo, as it’s where the action is taking place. The water foam shows action. The Orange door opens up to the lady on the left, who is on the upper left quadrant, more ‘rule of thirds’ theory. At this point in post-editing, I un- ashamedly used what I call a ‘Hollywood Glow’ technique, which is a blurring that smooths the skin, almost to the point of showing no pores, ala Vogue-ish photos. The Emotion shows an at-peace with the world, rested, satisfied, untroubled look about her that I still remember. One of the ‘Sisters’ pictures that I cherish on the ‘Three Sisters Cruise’. 1. Warmed-up leftovers.

I am afraid that in the July issue I got up from the didactic dining table early, leaving untouched a tasty dessert. I had been feasting so well on the optional apostrophe as served to us by the retail world that I neglected to partake of one or two appetising vintage consumer products so well- known that we may have stopped noticing whether or not they wore an ’. Can you remember clearly which of the following ‘household names’, all presented in the following list without an apostrophe, sported one in their ads … and which companies dispensed with it?

Cadburys? Wrigleys? Allens Sweets? Arnotts Biscuits? Hills Hoist? Uncle Tobys Oats? H’mmmm? I’ll be back with message after this More. For there IS more, and it’s all happening in my “You can guess wrong” department. When emailing my grandson in London as recently as June 2 of this year, I spelled Regents Park without the apostrophe. His return message included it, and I was suitably chastened by my own failure to recognise the obvious. My immediate response, on the same day, held this relevant section

As a point of interest, I wrote an article for AUSOM News about the use and misuse of apostrophes and am currently supplementing that with an assessment of its optional use in official names and signs. Consequently I omitted it in "Regent's Park", erroneously thinking that it had been dropped. I'm glad you put me right … I just checked my London Tube map and it is full of necessary apostrophes. St. James's Park, for instance. Full stop after the 't' too! I am still certain that there is ONE station that had omitted it, but I don't have time at the moment to flush the blighter out. I still have to convince the occasional doubter that this is just Monty Maizels's opinion (and not "Monty Maizels' opinion".)

My weak excuse for the unwarranted assumption about the apostrophe’s untimely demise in the London Tube map is that I grew us as a child of the Art Deco/Bauhaus era and throughout the ’30s worshipped at the shrine of the straight line, orderliness and simplicity of design I saw in the new architecture and furniture. In these qualities the London Tube map was exemplary so, without referring to one, I assumed that the same damage had occured as that wrought on the face of BRASHS by some typographical neatness freak who removed a ‘blemish’, only to leave behind a name that was unpronounceable without facial contortion and, possibly, unseemly spitting. So attractive were the geometric layout of the map and the Gill Sans typeface, the apostrophe must surely have been seen as intrusive – and summarily rejected. No. In this I was wrong on two counts: 1.Where already in print, it seems to have been uniformly preserved. 2. The renowned sculptor and typographer Eric Gill, while undoubtedly the creator of the beautifully rounded SansSerif font that bears his name, was not responsible for the map design or its lettering. The former was designed by Harry Beck in 1931, so that falls within my memory span. The latter was the brainchild of Edward Johnston, a wizard calligrapher of the day, and Gill was his pupil. Johnston’s London Underground type was designed in 1916 for London Transport (if that was its official name back then – its latest incarnation is as Transport for London (TfL) in the "London Underground" face (commonly known as "P22 Johnson"). And, as if that weren’t already enough to upset our APPLE-cartography, I now read that the font was changed in 1980 so that is what we will be seeing 40 years later.

All of these stations rightly preserve the possessive apostrophe: St. John’s Wood, St. James’s Park. Regent’s Park, Earl’s Court. Queen’s Park, King’s Cross. Each refers to a single individual, and the most patent example is that of the eponymous Prince Regent, later to reign as King George IV.

Let us start with the Number 4. This is the fourth of my little essays into the way in which we are spoon-fed the language we use. Readers who have been with me since its inception will recall that my original title was to have been “Word Processing My Way” and that my intent in 2007 was to However, it was only after viewing an enlargement of the evocative image that I realised that this examine some of the millions of bits of information thrown at all of us constantly by the media, Toby is not a Toby of tradition. Yes, it’s about time. A four-letter word none of us wants to give up.

* * * * * * * * * * * * 1. The word ‘number’ is always singular, right? 2. And what we read in the daily press is always right, right?

I have known since my schooldays that proposition (2) is untenable, since I was already collecting egregious examples of inattention to faulty spelling and incongruous grammmar in the British daily press and American magazines, many with humorous outcomes that appealed to my juvenile mind. My bookshelves contain a few booklet collections of such printed gaffes. I also retain and treasure the same juvenile mind. Let us start with the Number 4. This is the fourth of my little essays into the way in which we are spoon-fed the language we use. * * * * * * * * * * * * 1. The word ‘number’ is always singular, right? 2. And what we read in the daily press is always right, right?

I have known since my schooldays that proposition (2) is untenable, since I was already collecting egregious examples of inattention to faulty spelling and incongruous grammmar in the British daily press and American magazines, many with humorous outcomes that appealed to my juvenile mind. My bookshelves contain a few booklet collections of such printed gaffes. I also retain and treasure the same juvenile mind. However, it was not until the 1980s that I encountered an excellent reason to condemn strict adherence to the first statement.
