11 On the RecordWITH

Each month in this section, we feature a different one of our On The Beat artists for an informal interview. This month we’d like to introduce you to a wonderful singer-songwriter from New York: Ayo Awosika.

On The Beat (OTB): You just moved out to Los Angeles from NYC a couple months ago. in the DC/VA area, we would take trips there to see musicals and I just always thought Tell us a little bit about your musical life in NY before coming here. it was so glamorous and exciting. I’ve known since I was little that I wanted to pursue music in someway and it always seemed like NY was the best place to do that. In terms Ayo Awosika (AA): ): I lived in NYC for 3 years, which had always been kind of a dream of aspects of the scene - there seemed to be a lot of freedom. People were doing all of mine. I thought I would have headed straight there out of college but I ended up different types of music and taking a 5 year detour in Colorado. So once I got to NYC, I was really excited to jump that was really exciting and into the music scene. I had an EP under my belt. I had already started recording my inspiring for me. debut in NYC with my producer and was playing there almost every month so before I moved here I’d started building a fan base. I have a great community of OTB: OTB: What were some of musician friends there as well, so I worked on building my dream band (which I found) your favorite venues and local and we played a lot of shows! I also joined a few other bands (Gedeon Luke and the NYC bands that made you People) which is kind of a gospel/soul/funk band and I toured with them quite a bit. I happy to be part of the scene? was also in another band that composed and performed film scores live. I finished my album shortly after moving to NYC. It was a wild 3 years and to be honest, the last two AA: NYC has some really I really wasn’t there that much because of touring, but I loved it!! special spots - legendary spots. I kind of had a mission OTB: Where did you go to college? What was it about life and music that attracted you to play all those legendary to NYC from a distance? What aspects of the music scene were calling to you? spots... The Bitter End was a big one for me because AA: I always knew that I wanted to go to Berklee College of Music, so even though knowing so many of idols I was accepted, I deferred and went to University of Indianapolis to study classical played there: Joni Mitchell, voice first. This was more my parents idea, to be honest, but I wouldn’t change my Etta James, James Taylor, path at all because the two years I spent there completely shaped me as a vocalist Sarah McLachlan and the list and as a human being. I learned so much of what I now rely on as a foundation and I goes on, so I was really excited to check that one off my list! There’s a really vibrant was blessed with an incredible voice teacher. I had one lesson with her when I visited community thriving and continuing to grow around the Rockwood Music Hall venues and I was hooked - she’s the reason I went there. Then after 2 years, I started feeling and I was pretty integrated there as well. It was so cool to see musicians coming restless and really was getting into jazz. I was listening to it all the time and learning out to support their friends and collaborating as much as we all did. Really great for all the songs I could. I transferred to Berklee and was there for 3 years, I graduated in networking too. I miss that place! It was also really interesting to watch venues fall 2007. The attraction to NYC was always in me since my childhood because growing up away.

12 I always loved The Living Room, so when that closed, it was a sad day. But there are AA: LA was never really on my radar, and I don’t really know why! I just never pictured also a lot of new venues that are popping up that are really great and I’m excited myself living out here - I figured I would settle into NYC and never leave. I’m sure to see some of them breed legends and a more rich history for my generation of some of that is just from the fact that I grew up on the East coast and my family is musicians. Another favorite spot that is sometimes forgotten is City Winery. What a there. But as I started to leave NYC more, travel and tour and see more of the country beautiful room! Oh! And the Brooklyn Bowl! It’s all coming back! (including LA) and the fact that I lived near the mountains in Colorado for so long... NYC started to feel a little less like home every time I would come back from the road. I still loved it, but I had a feeling that there was more that I needed to explore. At this point, I’d had some cool opportunities - getting asked to audition for the lead in Book “My first week in LA alone was amazing... of Mormon, traveling around the world with my band, and singing backgrounds for Bobby McFerrin came up to me to compliment me and I lots of artists both live and in studio and my interest in music was broadening. I fell was like, ‘Oh right, this is what LA is like!’. ” in love with studio work, was starting to become interested in acting, was learning -Ayo more about production and licensing music and was also playing around with the idea of introducing new elements into my own music. I started visiting LA more and it just felt GOOD, I felt more free than I had in a long time. Plus lots of my friends were starting to move to LA in what seemed like droves, so I knew that I would have an awesome community already in place out here.

OTB: What’s your musical experience in LA been like? What are some of your favorite and or most surprising experiences so far?

AA: My first week in LA alone was amazing. I got connected to OTBMA and played a gig at Casa Del Mar my first week and it was that gig that Bobby McFerrin came up to me to compliment me and I was like, “Oh right, this is what LA is like!”. I’ve met some amazing people in these first couple months - people I never expected to, you know? People I really have followed and/or respected from a distance or hoped to one day work with. So it’s been a really surprising and warm welcome! Playing at Casa has been a sunny spot that I can return to and I love being a part of that community and family - it’s a beautiful place and everyone is so kind. I’ve started going out to shows too, to support friends and check out more venues and I’m really excited to start playing more and to put together my band out here.

OTB: What’s in the cards for you and your career right now? What are you working on? What should we be keeping an eye out for?

AA: Well, I mentioned this debut album. I’ve been sort of sitting on it for a couple of years, but it’s finally coming out this spring so you can look for that! It’s called “We Best Not Wait”. And other than that, I’m writing quite a bit, and getting really excited to get more music out. You’ll definitely see a higher volume of music from me in OTB: I feel like leaving NYC is such a challenging thing to do for anyone who loves the the near future... more so than in the past! I am exploring my interest in acting and I city. I personally still have my 917 phone number as a badge of pride. At the same imagine that by the summer, you’ll see me performing out at more venues with my time, there’s more and more musicians coming to LA from NYC. How did LA start new live show and I promise you that it will be killer! to become a possibility for you? What was the inputs and creative force behind the move? Did you resist with all your might? I certainly did!
