PREPARED EXCLUSIVELY FOR CASA DEL MAR BY: MEET THE ARTISTS MELISSA MORGAN Melissa Morgan began studying piano at age four. During high school she began singing with local choirs and was soon performing with vocal groups across the country and abroad. In 1998, Morgan entered SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. She has been a regular performer at some of New York’s top jazz rooms such as Smalls, Smoke and St. Nick’s Pub. She has appeared with her own trio as well as other artists including Harold Mabern, David Hazeltine, and Sam Yahel. MAURICE SMITH On any given day you can find him serenading audiences at local ven- ues. An old soul, Maurice is clearly influenced by the greats. He counts among his influences, Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, and Al Green and is often compared to the celebrated tenors of our time such as Stokeley, Raphael Saadiq, El DeBarge, and the greatest of them all Stevie Won- der. Nic Jackson Nic Jackson is at the prime of his life. With no need for a stage name, the breakthrough artist stands above the rest with his soulful voice, breathtaking melodies, and tasteful instrumentation. He attributes his mu- sic style to legends like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Tower of Power, Brian McKnight, Sharon Jackson (his mother) and his Aunt Janice Marie Johnson of the Grammy Award-winning group, A Taste of Honey. Nic applies his inspiration to being genuine within his music and his performances. PREPARED EXCLUSIVELY FOR CASA DEL MAR BY: MEET THE ARTISTS JOANNA WALLFISCH Hailed by pianist Fred Hersch as, “a real discovery—a first-rate musician in every way,” London born singer-songwriter Joanna Wallfisch has emerged as an important voice, combining “the intimate purview of a singer-songwriter with the technical liberties of a jazz improviser” (The Boston Globe). With a classical and jazz background her music com- bines post-folk and art-song with a poetic lyricism which The New York Times described as “sensitive and deep”. GRETJE ANGELL Mainly influenced by Anita O’Day, Chet Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, and Carmen McRae, Gretje’s sense of rhythm and phrasing - with a pure, even tone to match - is inspired by these jazz greats. Her tongue dances lightly over both Brazilian rhythms and swing, giving into the music with improvisational performances, making her a tour de force on the scene and rivaling contemporary vocalists such as the much admired Cyrille Aimee and Diana Krall. Alana Chirino She is the daughter of Cuban legendary singer Willy Chirino and pop diva Lisette Alvarez. To say music flows through her DNA is an under- statement. Her three sisters are all musicians that play separately as well as together and all have had their own successes. It wasn’t that The De- fiant was born not wanting to continue the success that might come with using a family name, it was that the path Alana was paving is clearly her own. Her talent as a singer, songwriter is equivalent to her talent as a bassist. She is a force to be reckoned with as a multifaceted artist wheth- er recording in the studio or performing around LA. PREPARED EXCLUSIVELY FOR CASA DEL MAR BY: MEET THE ARTISTS THE ARTISTS JOE LOPICCOLO FLAMENCO TRIO Joe LoPiccolo is a guitarist and composer whose work is influenced by Brazilian, Classical, Flamenco and Jazz genres. Writer Dan O’Heron of the Pasadena Weekly states his music is: “Soft spoken eloquence, fascinatingly improvised.” Andy Ellis, former senior editor of Guitar Player wrote: “LoPiccolo’s impeccably executed, imaginative arrangements reveal his mastery of the guitar and its most subtle timbres.” GREYLYN Grey, recently on NBC’s 5th Season of the hit singing show “The Voice” has wowed audiences across the globe with her powerful vocal perfor- mances. Grey worked with Adam Levine to make her way to the Top 20 with powerhouse songs such as “Catch My Breath” and “Already Gone” by Kelly Clarkson, “Domino” by Jessie J, and “Still Into You” by Paramore. She’s a sweet, unassuming girl with lots of personality. Grey has been compared with big artists such as Kelly Clarkson and Sara Bareilles. Her style and ability to story tell and convey emotion in a song is what truly sets her apart.
