Lot 151 *William Mitchell (b.1925) EAGLES - ‘AND THE FIRST BEAST WAS LIKE A LION AND THE SECOND BEAST LIKE A CALF; AND THE THIRD BEAST HAD A FACE AS A MAN AND THE FOURTH BEAST WAS AS A FLYING EAGLE, AND THE FOUR BEASTS HAD EACH OF THEM SIX WINGS ABOUT HIM AND THEY WERE FULL OF EYES WITHIN’ - THE BOOK OF REVELATIONS Two original copies of the maquettes for the large relief panels flanking the main doors of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, Liverpool Fibreglass with bronzed patina 30 x 30cm (2) £800 - 1,200

William Mitchell was born in London in 1925. With the advent of the Second World War, he joined the Royal Navy, where he began creating painted murals on refurbished club and canteen buildings. Keen to pursue a career in classical restoration, he continued his studies after the war, graduating from the Royal College of Arts during the mid-1950s. His sculpture during the 1960s and 70s was experimental, though popular, but despite working on numerous large-scale murals and public works of art, Mitchell is considered by some to be one of the most unrecognised of 20th century British sculptors. It is only latterly that his work has become appreciated, with English Heritage recently awarding thirteen of his sculptures with Grade II listed status. Construction of Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral began in 1962. Commissioned by the Cathedral’s architect, Sir Frederick Gibberd, Mitchell made a pair of maquettes for approval, making a second pair for himself which he used during the construction of the bronze-faced fibreglass panels. The originals remain in Mitchell’s personal archives, but he has donated this pair to be auctioned on behalf of the charity Home Start, Chichester branch, to raise funds to continue their valuable work in the community. Differing in some respects from the final design within the Cathedral, each has nevertheless been dated and signed by the sculptor, and they are accompanied by signed documents of authentication.

Lots 201 to 221 Lionel Bulmer (1919-1992) and Margaret Green (1925-2003) Lionel Bulmer was the son of a London architect; Margaret Green the daughter of a Teeside steelworker. By six years the elder, Lionel enrolled at Clapham Art School before being conscripted at the outbreak of the Second World War. After demobilisation, he was accepted by the Royal College of Art, at that time relocated to the Lake District, and there he met Margaret Green. Almost from that moment they became inseparable and were affectionately known as ‘MargaretandLionel’. She had both looks and talent, and was described by a contemporary as the ‘full femme fatale’. It was both a lifelong love affair and total partnership, but they never felt the need to marry until shortly before his death in 1992. When the Royal College returned to Kensington, they were taught by, among others, and Carel Weight, and supported their painting with teaching work themselves. They spent a few summers on the Sussex coast at Littlehampton before, in the late 1950s, they found a delapidated medieval house near Stowmarket in Suffolk, which Margaret Green and Lionel Bulmer they lovingly restored over many years and turned into their rural ‘paradise’. Prominent members of the New Club, they captured the spirit of the post-war age in their pictures. They were captivated in particular by the Suffolk coast around Southwold and Walberswick and, from their countless visits there between 1960 and 1990, produced a stream of vivid and evocative paintings of beach, sea and harbour. Life in their domestic haven was recorded, by Margaret, in intimate studies of flowers, mantelpieces and tabletops and, by Lionel, in intricate and colourful patterns of rug or curtain. After Lionel’s death in 1992, Margaret lived on for another eleven years, but was unable to produce another picture.
