he business of film is paramount to breathing for M. Denise Simmons. An award-winning artistic director and CEO of MD Simmons Productions, Inc., Simmons was raised in Belle GladeT and Liberty City and co-founded 2 Chix with a camera, the number one photography company for Black, female entrepreneurs and professionals.

Simmons is humble, but boasts more than 10 years of in- dustry experience. She is, too, a humanitarian, mother and woman of faith who views the world from a lens inspired by the rigid work ethic exampled by her Haitian immigrant parents. With a bachelor of arts degree in public relations from the University of Florida, Simmons served as the creative force behind marketing and branding of some of South Florida’s most notable spiritual leaders like Pastor Geralda Larkins of Impart Kingdom Ministries and includes in her resume Ankara Miami fashion week, the women’s luncheon titled, What if she knew she has power? and Train, trans- form and transition. “I’ve always been involved with my church in some capac- ity of entertainment,” said Simmons. “I worked with youth on various plays and productions and was also a musician and played drums for my church.” A former member of Soul Harvest, Simmons said when the ministry needed someone to shoot photos and videos, she was ready to advance her hobby. She volunteered, enjoyed it and decided to make it her career. MD Simmons Productions began as an extension of 2 Chix with a camera and is now a full-service, production house with a mission statement to produce, create, and manage innovative artistic projects that bring revelation and provokes transformation in the entertainment industry. “We produced a service documentary called “Before you shoot,” and it won a festival award for the Urban Film Festi- val,” said Simmons. “We are working on a documentary in association with the African-American research library, documentary music videos, and doing more long-term projects to sustain my crew and myself,” Through private funding, Simmons launched her first doc- umentaries, but said most of her work relies on sweat SEE LENS 10B The Miami Times 9 MIAMITIMESONLINE.COM | MARCH 11-17, 2020 New Coconut Grove visitor center unveiled New visiting center marks one of 25 center locations in the Miami-area. The NBA, NHL, Major League Baseball and Major League Soc- cer are closing access to locker rooms and clubhouses to all nonessential personnel, includ- ing media, in response to the coronavirus crisis, the leagues announced in a joint statement Monday night. They said they made the de- cision “after consultation with infectious disease and public health experts.” The NBA, in a call with teams earlier Monday, stressed that the move is not to ban reporters but to ensure the safety of players and staff in those areas. The statement, in part, read: “Given the issues that can be associated with close contact in pre- and post-game settings, all team locker rooms and club- houses will be open only to players and essential employees of teams and team facilities un- til further notice. Media access will be maintained in designat- ed locations outside of the lock- er room and clubhouse setting.” The changes, which the leagues say are temporary, will begin Tuesday — though some NHL teams began putting them into use this past weekend and the Buffalo Sabres did the same Miami Heat locker room on Monday night.
