Sep. 2021 Reimagining Everyday Life in the GDR: Post-Ostalgia in Contemporary German Films and Museums Stefanie Kreibich Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of PhD in Modern Languages Bangor University, School of Modern Languages and Cultures April 2018 Abstract In the last decade, everyday life in the GDR has undergone a mnemonic reappraisal following the Fortschreibung der Gedenkstättenkonzeption des Bundes in 2008. No longer a source of unreflective nostalgia for reactionaries, it is now being represented as a more nuanced entity that reflects the complexities of socialist society. The black and white narratives that shaped cultural memory of the GDR during the first fifteen years after the Wende have largely been replaced by more complicated tones of grey. -

Able Archer and the War Scare of 1983
A History Lesson in the German TV Series Deutschland 83: Able Archer and the War Scare of 1983 Sandro Sylvio WIESENBERG Introduction Deutschland 83 is a German television series that was first aired in 2015 in Germany as well as in the USA, UK, and many other countries with great success (Oltermann 2016). In 2017, it was also released in Japan on Amazon Prime. The series depicts events from the year 1983, a time when the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union had reached once again an increased level of tension. The main character, a young East German border guard, is sent as spy to West Germany. There he assumes the position of an orderly officer under a general of the West German armed forces who is coordinating an upcoming large-scale NATO exercise. As part of a Soviet-lead operation, the protagonist gathers intelligence about this exercise to find out if it is a disguise for a real attack, as feared by some of the Soviet leaders. The events in the drama culminate when the NATO exercise turns from the simulation of a conventional armed conflict to a simulated nuclear war during its final stage codenamed ‘Able Archer’ and the danger of an escalation between East and West grows. The plot of Deutschland 83 revolves around a less-known historical event and it is conceivable that many viewers never have heard of Able Archer before. However, the events related to this military exercise have sparked some controversy among historians as to how close the world was at the brink of a nuclear war at that time. -
Scms 2017 Conference Program
SCMS 2017 CONFERENCE PROGRAM FAIRMONT CHICAGO MILLENNIUM PARK March 22–26, 2017 Letter from the President Dear Friends and Colleagues, On behalf of the Board of Directors, the Host and Program Committees, and the Home Office staff, let me welcome everyone to SCMS 2017 in Chicago! Because of its Midwestern location and huge hub airport, not to say its wealth of great restaurants, nightlife, museums, shopping, and architecture, Chicago is always an exciting setting for an SCMS conference. This year at the Fairmont Chicago hotel we are in the heart of the city, close to the Loop, the river, and the Magnificent Mile. You can see the nearby Millennium Park from our hotel and the Art Institute on Michigan Avenue is but a short walk away. Included with the inexpensive hotel rate, moreover, are several amenities that I hope you will enjoy. I know from previewing the program that, as always, it boasts an impressive display of the best, most stimulating work presently being done in our field, which is at once singular in its focus on visual and digital media and yet quite diverse in its scope, intellectual interests and goals, and methodologies. This year we introduced our new policy limiting members to a single role, and I am happy to say that we achieved our goal of having fewer panels overall with no apparent loss of quality in the program or member participation. With this conference we have made presentation abstracts available online on a voluntary basis, and I urge you to let them help you navigate your way through the program. -
