Moreno* Universidad del Rosario, Colombia Jairo Muñoz-Delgado** UNAM, México ABSTRACT Ethology has been traditionally defined as the biological study of behavior. Although its initial studies go back to the second half of the XIX century, its acknowledgement as a scientific discipline dates only from 1973, when the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology is awarded to three of its most outstanding representatives: Konrad Lorenz, Niko Tinbergen and Karl von Frisch. In this text a journey that includes the main historical landmarks of ethology will be undertaken, making special emphasis on conceptual and theoretical aspects. SUNDBERG (Sundberg and Associates) Dr. Mark L. Sundberg received his doctorate degree in Applied Behavior Analysis from Western Michigan University (1980). He is the author of the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (the VB-MAPP), and the co-author of The ABLLS; Teaching Language to Children with Autism or Other Developmental Disabilities; and A Collection of Reprints on Verbal Behavior. He has published over 45 professional papers, including a chapter titled “Verbal Behavior” in Cooper, Heron, & Heward (2007). He is the founder and past editor of the journal The Analysis of Verbal Behavior, a twice past- president of The Northern California Association for Behavior Analysis, a past-chair of the Publication Board of ABAI, and was a member of the committee that developed the BACB Task Lists. Dr. Sundberg has given over 500 conference presentations and workshops, and taught 80 college courses on behavior analysis, verbal behavior, sign language, and child development. His awards include the 2001 “Distinguished Psychology Department Alumnus Award” from Western Michigan University. Abstract: Many children with autism acquire an extensive vocabulary of mands, tacts, and listener discriminations, but have difficulty answering WH questions or engaging in meaningful conversational behavior. -

The interviewer is Mary Levitt. Gewirtz: In response to question one on general intellectual history in the interview schedule, my parents were immigrants. My father immigrated to this country in the early 1900s, my mother in about 1922 or 23. They came from Eastern Europe. I was an only child. My first language was Yiddish. I learned English on the streets and in school and my parents improved their English because of my learning, which is why I think multi-cultural education is stupid. Education in a native language, which comes out usually to be Spanish, is not constructive for children, many of whom turn out to have accented English their entire lives because of that training.
