This review has been a long time coming because I had to muddle through what I felt was a betrayal from this author who up to this point was one of my favorites, and how I won't be continuing this series. But Hammond had drawn himself up more formally: whatever he might now offer would certainly be cloaked in more tempting accents, and all the more difficult to resist. With no land in sight, the dragons are forced to remain aloft for many hours, until they come upon another ship; the French dragon-transport Triomphe - carrying four dragons; Genevieve - whose captain is revealed to be none other than De Guignes - Ardentuse , Piccolo , and the Incan ambassador Maila Yupanqui. I've been a moderate fan of Temeraire adventures since His Majesty's Dragon , and I'm glad to find some improvement after the less satisfactory Tongues of Serpents. Time is of the essence if the eggs are to be borne home before hatching. Sure it's been a long time since he blushed at the sight of Catherine in trousers, but the whole contrast of his upbringing to this strange new world was a lot of fun. Not great, but better than book 6, so I guess I'll get 8 in case we're on an upward slope. Eventually, it is revealed that the empress, widow of the former monarch but now ruler in her own right, is being pressured by her court to take up a consort, and Iskierka, obsessed with wealth and social acclaim, proposes her captain Granby as a suitor. This book is sort of a return to form. The best treat is the characterizations of the main characters of the the Dragon and his Captain, but you go far enough into it and there's even some substance - meditations on how the war to fight Napoleon good balances against the preservation of the worst aspects of the British Empire bad or, even deeper, how the presence of an intelligent but very differently intelligent companion species could influence the development of human culture on levels both discrete and extraordinary. At least mention how badass he is, aviatoring shit without a hand. Also I hate it since I saw it before starting the book and you had me freaked that he or Iskierka were going to die or be traitors or something equally horrible. I want a dragon. And now the government that sidelined them has decided they have the best chance at negotiating a peace with the angry Tswana, who have besieged the Portuguese royal family in Rio—and thus offer to reinstate Laurence to his former rank and seniority as a captain in the Aerial Corps. I look forward to watching them continue their adventures as they move into North America. Part of the four-star rating is the very-probably-wrong feeling I have that this book, like the previous one, is too short, but it's really that it feels as if Temeraire and Lawrence have been sidelined That's definitely Victory of Eagles. But however Laurence thought of MacArthur—a second-rate Napoleon, whose talents were not more outsize than his ambitions—he could do him this much credit, or perhaps calumny: if Hammond indeed bore such an offer, Laurence thought it would indeed be accepted. I was excited for this one because it was set in South America, and I have always enjoyed the Mayan and Aztec culture and was eager to see what it was like in this time period. My only tiny critique for this installment was the rather abrupt ending, but it was a great set up for the 8th book. I really like Novik's books and I really like Vance's readin of them. Lists with This Book. They certainly moved across South- America and all the way through the Incan empire, but it just felt like something was missing. And the fact that I am composing this farewell letter during the final week of my tenure isn’t making the task any easier. Between my duties at MWA, my career, and my family, this last year has been a bit of a blur and I am certain that after a few months to reflect on it, I will be better able to focus on the things that were accomplished, as opposed to missed opportunities. Having said that, I can assure you that the representatives you have elected as Board President, chapter presidents, and At-Large Directors — and the officers they, in turn, elect — care deeply about the organization and the individual members. Passion is probably not the first word to come to mind when you consider your elected representatives, but it should be. If you could see as I did how hard these folks work, the level of personal sacrifice they make in order to serve you, then you would share the same high level of confidence I have that Mystery Writers of America will continue to flourish. Early in her career, Duncan primarily focused on romance novels for teens and pictures books for children. In 1966, Duncan published two novels that revolutionized the world of young adult fiction: Point of Violence and Ransom. Prior to these two novels, most fiction aimed at young adults was filled with ‘lessons to be learned’ and two-dimensional lead characters.
