  • See It Big! Action Features More Than 30 Action Movie Favorites on the Big
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ‘SEE IT BIG! ACTION’ FEATURES MORE THAN 30 ACTION MOVIE FAVORITES ON THE BIG SCREEN April 19–July 7, 2019 Astoria, New York, April 16, 2019—Museum of the Moving Image presents See It Big! Action, a major screening series featuring more than 30 action films, from April 19 through July 7, 2019. Programmed by Curator of Film Eric Hynes and Reverse Shot editors Jeff Reichert and Michael Koresky, the series opens with cinematic swashbucklers and continues with movies from around the world featuring white- knuckle chase sequences and thrilling stuntwork. It highlights work from some of the form's greatest practitioners, including John Woo, Michael Mann, Steven Spielberg, Akira Kurosawa, Kathryn Bigelow, Jackie Chan, and much more. As the curators note, “In a sense, all movies are ’action’ movies; cinema is movement and light, after all. Since nearly the very beginning, spectacle and stunt work have been essential parts of the form. There is nothing quite like watching physical feats, pulse-pounding drama, and epic confrontations on a large screen alongside other astonished moviegoers. See It Big! Action offers up some of our favorites of the genre.” In all, 32 films will be shown, many of them in 35mm prints. Among the highlights are two classic Technicolor swashbucklers, Michael Curtiz’s The Adventures of Robin Hood and Jacques Tourneur’s Anne of the Indies (April 20); Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (April 21); back-to-back screenings of Mad Max: Fury Road and Aliens on Mother’s Day (May 12); all six Mission: Impossible films

  • 80S Movie Trivia Questions and Answers
80s Movie Trivia Questions From: conversationstartersworld.com/80s-movie-trivia 1. Which 80s movie was the highest grossing film of the decade? E.T. The Extraterrestrial The 1982 movie surpassed Star Wars to become the highest grossing film of all time. The movie held that record for 11 years until it was surpassed by Jurassic Park in 1993. 2. Which 80s movie was Alan Rickman’s first feature film role? Die Hard The 1988 film grossed over $140 million worldwide and turned Bruce Willis into an action star. Before then he had been known only as a comedy actor. Willis filmed the comedy television series Moonlighting at the same time as Die Hard. Beethoven’s Ode to Joy is the terrorist’s theme song in the movie, and Rickman can be seen humming the song during his elevator scene with Mr. Takagi. 3. Which 80s movie spawned 6 sequels and a T.V. series? Police Academy The comedy film grossed $146 million worldwide and became the sixth highest grossing film of 1984. The film was inspired by real life police cadets. During the filming of The Right Stuff Paul Maslansky witnessed a diverse group of police cadets ineffectively doing crowd control for the filming. He found the situation humorous, and that night he wrote up two pages to give to the Ladd Company. They loved the concept and agreed to develop the movie. 4. Which 80’s movie was the first to become a hit largely due to MTV? Flashdance The 1983 film had a decent opening weekend but the soundtrack was what catapulted the film to success.

  • Mature Masculinity and the Ageing Action Hero
Meijer Rebecca Feasey Mature masculinity and the ageing action hero The ageing male action hero is a figure many are familiar with through the character of Bruce Willis in the Die Hard series. However, physical strength, speeds and agility are usually not associated with old age. Whether age makes a difference in the action hero genre is a question Rebecca Feasey deals with in this article. Introduction Much work within the field of film and gender studies has attempted to theorise, unmask and deconstruct the representation of the male action hero, paying particular attention to the spectacular body and the herculean physical performances of characters such as John McClane/Bruce Willis, Martin Riggs/Mel Gibson and Indiana Jones/Harrison Ford. And yet, at a time when these stars are returning to the action roles that made them famous, in some cases, several decades later, scholars continue to ignore and overlook the fundamental notion of age in their discussions of the hard bodied, hegemonic hero. After all, hegemonic masculinity has associations with physical prowess, sexual virility, social dominance and aggression, which are potentially at odds with the image of the ageing male. With this in mind, I propose to examine the representation of the ageing action hero in the popular and long running Die Hard (1988, 1990, 1995, 2007) franchise, and consider the ways in which the mature masculinity on offer is seen to either be confirming to or challenging the hegemonic ideal. Hegemonic masculinity and male hierarchies Although there are a myriad of masculinities in existence at any one moment, this is not to say that each one is treated equally or granted the same level of social, sexual or economic power.

  • Die Hard – Synopsis John Mcclane, a Wisecracking New York City Cop
Die Hard – Synopsis John McClane, a wisecracking New York City cop, comes to LA for Christmas. His wife, Holly, has recently taken an executive job there; she took the kids with her, too. McClane begrudges Holly packing up like that, but he loves her and hopes to work things out. Wandering through the company holiday party in the sleek new high-rise, Nakatomi Plaza, McClane feels out of place and things aren’t going that well with Holly either. It gets a lot worse when a band of European terrorists invade the building. Led by the suave and brilliant Hans Gruber, they’re seriously armed and organized. They lock down the building, seize control of the computer system, cut off all outside communication. The terrorists gather the only people left in the building, those attending the party, and keep them docile with their automatic weapons. Gruber is in total control. Except over McClane. Who has slipped into a stairwell unseen. Gruber escorts the head of the company, Mr. Takagi, into an office and demands a computer code that will unlock a vault containing 640 million dollars worth of bonds. Takagi refuses. Gruber blows his head off. Nearby in hiding, McClane watches. He realizes Gruber is fully capable of killing the hostages—including his wife. Armed with only his wits, McClane is the only one with a shot at saving the day. Hans has his tech specialist set about breaking the computer code, a complex routine that requires going through seven computerized locks. McClane tries to alert authorities by tripping a fire alarm, but the ruse fails, only signaling to Hans that there’s a rogue loose in the building.

  • 'Geri-Action' Film
Narratives of cultural and professional redundancy: Ageing action stardom and the ‘geri-action’ film Glen Donnar (RMIT University) Abstract Focusing on The Expendables films, I identify the importance of discourses of professional and cultural redundancy in ‘geri-action’, an emergent subgenre of Hollywood action film that has revitalised the careers of ageing action stars such as Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. These redundancies, which hold long-standing significance in 1980s action film, are compounded in geri- action by advanced age and diminished physical capacity. In geri-action, the spectacle of once idealised, muscled bodies is concealed and displaced onto oversized guns, fetishised vehicles and younger action bodies. However much geri-action resists 1980s action stars’ use-by dates, it ultimately admits physical and generic exhaustion. Keywords: geri-action, Hollywood action films, ageing stars, Expendables The Rise of ‘Geri-action’ The release of a third Expendables film in 2014 extended the twilight of ageing 1980s action idols in the so-called ‘geri-action’ subgenre, that is, action films predominantly showcasing male stars ranging in age from their mid-50s into their 70s. The Expendables series (Stallone 2010; West 2012; Hughes 2014) features a motley team of elite mercenaries, led by Barney Ross (Stallone), recurrently motivated to take revenge on the all-star action villain after a local woman or beloved colleague is killed, injured or captured. The third film in the series adds such ageing action film luminaries as Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes and Harrison Ford (replacing Bruce Willis, who left the series after a conflict with Stallone) to the already extensive aged cast led by Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris.

  • The Avatars of Masculinity in Robocop (1987) and Its Remake (2014)
Représentations dans le monde anglophone – Janvier 2017 Man Made and Remade: the Avatars of Masculinity in Robocop (1987) and its Remake (2014) Cyril Besson, Univ. Grenoble Alpes, ILCEA4 Keywords: Robocop, Verhoeven, Padilha, remake, gender, genre, point of view in film. Mots-clés: Robocop, Verhoeven, Padilha, remake, genre, sexes, point de vue au cinéma. It is tempting to begin with a truism: nothing comes from nothing. This is a belief articulated by many in the twentieth century, among whom George Steiner in After Babel, where he presents culture as a long chain of translations and transformations of verbal, thematic or formal constants. The problem raised by the notion of a syntax of culture, however, is the same as with language, as exemplified by de Saussure’s distinction between langue and parole: if all one ever does is move around “building blocks” following the constraints imposed by a system, what of individual creativity? If the question is, generally speaking, of little import to most speakers of a given language, things are different when it comes to art and culture: finding one’s voice, embodying a sort of progress for one’s chosen form of expression and leaving one’s mark on the latter, is what being an artist is about. The question of whether there is such a thing as true artistic singularity might be insoluble (no artist exists, who has not been influenced in some way, no matter how unpleasant the idea might be to him)1; however, one could say that in the field of popular culture, the twenty-first century inverts the proposition, especially in the collaborative form of art that is the cinema.
