    Brixham Ward Boundary (Furzeham with Summercombe) Brixham for such a historic town appears to have been ill treated with regard to its civil boundaries in recent years. Originally, Brixham was a large ecclesiastical parish1 covering the town of Brixham and bounded by the River Dart and Churston Ferrers parish. With the formation of Torbay, a significant part of what was once Brixham has been lost to South Hams, particularly that part to the south and west of Kennels Road (A379), Kingswear Road, and Gattery Lane/Challeycroft Road. However, this still leaves the larger part of the old ecclesiastical parish within Torbay. I would make three points: Seaward boundaries First, for reasons which I cannot fathom, Torbay has chosen to extend their ward boundaries seawards. Given that Brixham is the biggest grossing fishing port in England, one would expect to see the Brixham ward boundaries extended seawards from the town. However, the Churston with Galmpton ward completely encloses the sea around Brixham. Further Brixham Outer Harbour would appear to lie within the bounds of the Churston and Galmpton ward. Consequently, a recent proposal for a new jetty in Brixham Outer Harbour would not be a matter for Brixham but for Churston and Galmpton. This seems totally nonsensical. Boundary between Furzeham with Summercombe and the Churston with Galmpton wards Second, there is a question then as to what the boundary, particularly the western one for Brixham should be. In my view, the determinand should be the boundary of the ecclesiastical parish for Brixham. The current proposals from Torbay for the Brixham ward of Furzeham with Summercombe show the boundary to the north of the A3022 (the main road into Brixham) is more or less where it should be given the boundaries between the Churston Ferrers and Brixham ecclesiastical parishes (although probably one or two small fields close and to the north of the main road which should be in Brixham are excluded).

Turn Dartmouth Steam Railway into Torbay Road by crossing the level crossing. Walk past the Harbour shops and take the third road on the right down Queens Road. Fairy Cove Turn into Torbay Park and walk towards the seafront. To Paignton At the Esplanade, cross the road onto the seafront. Turn left access Ledges and walk, enjoying the seafront and Paignton Sands whilst Roundham passing the pier on your right and Paignton Green on your left. Roundham Head from the Head Goodrington At some suitable point, retrace your steps and walk towards harbour there Sands the harbour. Having explored the harbour, come out onto is a choice of routes. Cliff Road. The paved route, suitable for wheelchairs is via Cliff Road, whilst another more difficult but interesting approach is along the South Quay and across Fairy Cove, climbing up the steps to join Cliff Road. As the route rounds the head itself, Goodrington Beach comes into sight and soon another choice of pathways. In order to avoid steps, keep to the top path and this will eventually bring you to Roundham Road. For those who wish to descend to the promenade below, a well constructed network of paths and steps lead the walker down over the red sandstone which gives this headland its attractive colouring.

    Owens Leah Photography: Paignton Historic Quarter A short heritage walk Paignton was already old when the Normans compiled the Domesday Book (“Osbernus the Bishop has a manor which is called Peintona [or Peintone in some transcriptions]...” begins the Domesday entry), although the recorded history of the town dates from the reign of Edward the Confessor, earlier in the 11th century. C.H. Patterson’s ‘History Of Paignton’ explains that the name was originally Paegingtun, ‘the farm of Paega’s people’. By 1720 the name had become Painton, and in the minutes of what had been the Paington Local Board in July 1867 the spelling changed to Paignton, although in the parish registers the spelling Paignton was first recorded in 1833. It is said that even when the railway station opened in 1859, it had ‘Paignton’ on one platform nameboard and Paington on the other. The Historic Quarter is centred on Church Street and Winner Street. Palace Avenue contains some fine examples of Victorian architecture. Begin your walk at the Station Lane side of the Paignton Library & Information Centre building. Walk up Station Lane, past the car park on the left, to the level crossing and Crossing Keeper’s Cottage, then turn right into Sands Road. At the traffic lights, cross over Dartmouth Road and walk up Elmsleigh Road, noting the handsome red‐brick interwar terraces of numbers 24 ‐ 42 on the left. At the end you will find yourself on Fisher Street. Look left to see the Torbay Inn on the opposite corner (thought to date from the early 1600’s) and the cottages in Sunbury Road, circa 1700’s.
