Safety Around BC Hydro Facilities

Kootenay Canal and Generating Station An important safety message for visitors BC Hydro’s many generating facilities in the region offer educational opportunities and the chance to enjoy the outdoors. However, it’s important to remember that all hydroelectric facilities can be dangerous to the unwary or the adventurous. BC Hydro is committed to operating our facilities safely and in a manner that respects the environment. We want you to remain safe during your visit and ask that you observe certain safety precautions. Our Kootenay Canal facility offers a unique opportunity for the public to walk, or jog, the 5 km service road that runs beside the canal. From the headworks gates beside Corra Linn Dam to the forebay above the Generating Station, the route offers scenic vistas and a chance to see indigenous birds and wildlife all year round. Visitors should stay well clear of all BC Hydro structures and electrical equipment. Areas of water immediately upstream and downstream of generating stations are particularly hazardous. Some hazards, such as swift, turbulent water flows, are readily apparent, while others, like the slippery, sloping concrete walls of the canal, are not. Hazards such as water flows may change quickly and without warning. Always obey posted warning signs and please respect fenced and gated areas. Stay on designated trails and within marked observation areas, and be sure to supervise children and pets closely. Unauthorized use of ATVs, motorcycles and other motorized vehicles is not permitted on the canal road. For further information about our operations, please visit our website at www.bchydro.com. Have a safe and informative visit.
