Who is Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa? (Chief of Army Staff Pakistan) Who is Gen Bajwa? General Bajwa, Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military), was commissioned in 16 Baloch Regiment on October 24, 1980. He is a graduate of the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College, Toronto; Naval Post Graduate University, Monterey, California, USA; and National Defence University, Islamabad. He has been an instructor at the School of Infantry and Tactics, Quetta; Command and Staff College, Quetta; and NDU. He has also served as the brigade major of an infantry brigade and Chief of Staff of Rawalpindi Corps. He has commanded 16 Baloch Regiment, an infantry brigade, and infantry division in Northern Areas Commander FCNA. He has also commanded the Pakistan contingent in Congo. General Qamar Javed Bajwa Public image Bajwa is an avid reader and has keen interest in the history of Europe. He enjoys cricket and was himself a good sportsman who used to play cricket as a wicket-keeper. He is reported to be a military man with no interest in politics and the one who remains well-connected with the junior officers and troops, and does not seek attention and protocol. Pakistan's Political Hybridity
Pakistan’s political hybridity: Asymmetric coexistence between Democracy and Martial law An infamous aphorism goes, "…While every country has an army, the Pakistani Army has a country". And indeed, in Pakistan, the Military Establishment has been for long the de facto ruler of the country, overshadowing the political landscape, garnering greater power and legitimacy for itself, leaving the civilian government and other executive bodies in state of disarray and implicit vassalage. Nevertheless, what some could consider complete political takeover, in reality is a complex situation of political hybridity, with an asymmetric coexistence between democratic and military elements, where the Army, more than often, has the final say. This article will further examine this hybrid nature, arguing that Pakistan’s history since its establishment has been built on the perceptions of continuous external threats and domestic unrests, which have been a manifestation of its existential struggle to define its identity, as a result of which the country has failed in consolidating its civil governance, providing the Army with oxygen to operate in a state of impunity due to these promulgated feelings of constant uncertainty and pressing emergency. It will use as case studies the latest fiasco of Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa’s extension of tenure and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s sit-in protests in Islamabad, analysing their implications for the future of democracy in the country and the stronghold of the Army. It will ultimately argue that the role of the Military Establishment should be solely restricted to protecting the borders of the country and henceforth, the article will put forward recommendations and comprehensive strategies for strengthening the democratic governance of Pakistan.

The Saudi-Pakistani relationship is a vast and dynamic web of cooperative linkages, age-old bonds of friendship. 1 The two countries work together extensively at the international level, within the framework of several bilateral, regional and global organizations including the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).2 Saudi Arabia is the biggest exporter of oil and petroleum products to Pakistan, while Saudi Arabia has been a key market for Pakistani goods and services. 3 Saudi Arabia, which hosts 1.9 million Pakistanis, tops the list of countries with highest remittances to Pakistan over $4.5 billion annually.4 Pakistan has traditionally maintained that its bilateral relationship with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is its most important diplomatic relationship. 5 According to the annual GFP (Global Fire Power) review, Pakistan is currently ranked 13 out of 133 countries on the list of military strength.6 With one of the largest armies in the world and as the only declared nuclear power in the Muslim world, Pakistan has maintained a unique position and works closely with Saudi Arabia. Pakistani military personnel frequently serve in Saudi Arabia and its last army chief, General Raheel Sharif, now heads an Islamic army coalition based out of Riyadh.7 The Pakistani Inter-Services Public Relations agency said on February 17, 2018, that a contingent of troops will be stationed in Saudi Arabia on a “training and advisory mission.”8 The announcement followed a meeting between Saudi Arabia's Ambassador, Nawaf Saeed Al-Maliki, and Pakistan Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa at General Headquarters Rawalpindi.

Rawalpindi – November 17, 2020 No PR-221/2020-ISPR General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) visited Quetta today. COAS interacted with participants of National Workshop Balochistan. The National Workshop Balochistan is aimed at enhancing understanding of participants about critical national security issues, timely decision making process, national security management system and elements of national power. Speaking on the occasion, COAS said that progress and stability in Balochistan is critical to the prosperity of Pakistan. All stakeholders including the army have synergized their efforts for socio -eco uplift of the people of Balochistan. Dilating upon security situation, COAS highlighted measures like fencing of Pak-Afghan and PAK-Iran Border, effective articulation of security apparatus deployed across the province, Quetta Safe City Project etc will have positive impact on the overall security paradigm of Balochistan. The most populous province of Pakistan, Punjab has long dominated the Pakistani polity and military. Sharif’s party, the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), heads both the Punjab provincial government and the national government. If the PML-N decides to continue Sharif’s attempts at better relations with India, it will again place the government at odds with the army, which wants oversight of foreign policy issues pertaining to Afghanistan and India. If the PML-N is interested in improving links with India, it will need to take action against terrorist groups. As with every such transition, American and international scholars and polic.y analysts are hopeful that this anny chief will be different from his predecessors. The tendency towards confinnation bias that "this general will be different" is driven by the fact that Pakistan's anny has long dominated the country's domestic and foreign affairs. As such, the army- not the elected ciVilians-presides over numerous issues that are of key concern to the U.S. government, including: nuclear weapons an? employment doctrine; relations with key Islamist militant groups (inter alta Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad GeM), Haqqani Network, Afghan Taliban); and bilateral relations with India; bilateral relations with Afghanistan; among numerous others.
