BAPTIMSAL PREPARATION & SUPPORT TEAM ADULT Rev. Msgr. This ministry of consolation extends prayerful support and comfort to individuals and families who are experiencing grief due to the death of a loved one by making bereavement baskets for the family.

This group of men and women, whom have knowledge in building trades, real estate, and maintenance advises our pastor on the maintenance, upkeep, and renewal of the parish buildings and grounds as needed. The committee also coordinates the Weekend Warriors.

Eucharist Ministers are entrusted with the responsibility of helping distribute the Eucharist at liturgy as well as washing the Sacred Vessels after Mass. Nine ministers are needed for each liturgy. The schedule is rotating and is created by the parish office.

Assistants (confirmed and age 16 and older) assist the Director of Faith Formation with special projects or events; with students who have special needs; and with catechists or the Director of Faith Formation in other capacities.

To become a Faith Formation Assistant, one must be a registered parishioner; be involved in a separate ministry at Pope John XXIII for one year prior to becoming an assistant; complete a catechist application specifying previous experiences with children along with references as well as to interview with the Director of Faith Formation; and attend safe environment training and retraining as needed. Prior teaching experience is not required.

Facilitators lead a six-week faith sharing group for parishioners who are interested in reading and understanding the Bible beyond what is heard at Mass.

The Finance Committee, mandated by Canon Law, provides counsel to our pastor concerning the administration of parish finances and budget, such as assists in reporting the status of finances to the parish membership; develops the annual budget for parish operations; measures monthly performance against that budget; and develops as well as administers the parish capital fund. Members of the Finance Committee are appointed by our pastor.

The Food Pantry is an outreach to the needy of our neighboring community. The pantry serves approximately 30+ families and 20 Byrne Manor residents monthly. Help is needed to purchase perishable and non-perishable items with funds from the (cont.) (cont.) Human Development Committee. Shopping is done at the convenience of volunteers. Food baskets are packed and distributed on a pre-scheduled Monday and Tuesday at 9am once a month. Donations left after Masses are carried, sorted and shelved.

All parishioners, 55 and older, are invited to join a social group that foster relationships within the senior community of Pope John XXIII Church. This is accomplished through regularly scheduled activities.

The Funeral Luncheon Committee assists the grieving family with the arrangements for a luncheon in the Parish Center after the Funeral Mass. The committee members provide the meal, set tables, serve the guests, and clean up after guests have left.

Greeters warmly welcome people as they arrive at church and distribute church bulletins. Three greeters participate at each liturgy. The schedule is rotating and is created by the parish office.

The Human Development Committee implements programs that help alleviate the needs of fellow parishioners and members of the local community. Current programs include the Ash Wednesday Soup Supper; the Christmas Giving Tree; a school supply drive for the less privileged children in Liverpool and at the Brady Faith Center; and other projects as requested by the community.

The Kitchen Patrol strives to make sure the parish kitchen remains neat and clean from week to week. This includes light cleaning, straightening up, and restocking supplies in the pantry.

Lectors (Grade 4 and older) proclaim the Word of God by reading Scriptures at the weekend liturgies and at other times as needed. Two lectors participate at each Mass. The schedule is rotating and is created by the parish office.

Commentators welcome the congregation at the beginning of Mass; make any special announcements; lead the Prayer of the Faithful; and announce the songs that will be sung. One commentator participates at each liturgy. The schedule is rotating and is created by the parish office.

This committee is responsible for planning the Masses, ceremonies and rituals for the liturgical seasons. The goal of the Liturgy Committee is to ensure that the changing needs of the parish are reflected in its liturgical life and to nourish the faith community through spirit-filled liturgies.

The Men’s Fellowship Group consists of men who meet to gather in Christ’s presence in an atmosphere of trust, equality, and anonymity to share personal feelings and experiences. Encouraged by the Holy Spirit, men come together to re-experience the spiritual awakening they received at their Baptism; deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ; and grow in their Catholic faith by participating in ongoing faith formation.

Adults should have a minimum of 2 to 3 years of music lessons prior to joining the choir. Practice is Sunday mornings after the 8:00a Mass twice a month. Teams of volunteers help make sandwiches for Oxford Inn on the 1st Saturday of each month after 5:00p Mass. Volunteers also prepare meals on the 5th Wednesday of the month. The schedule is rotating and is created by the parish office.

The Parish Garden is a vegetable garden on church property to provide fresh produce to

the Food Pantry during the growing season. Volunteers spend the spring and summer with planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting the garden. Gardening experience is not necessary.

The Pastoral Council, mandated by Canon Law, is a reflective/consultative body assisting our pastor in discerning the needs of our parish, its programs and activities, consistent with and expressive of the . The Pastoral Council is comprised of the pastor, the parish trustees and twelve men and women of the congregation. In June, new members are selected through a discernment process for a three-year term that begins in September. Meetings are for an hour monthly (other than summer months).

PASTORAL OUTREACH TO THE HOMEBOUND Gail Rau, Ministry Leader 315.622.2334

Eucharistic Ministers take the Body of Christ as well as compassion and cheer to those who are sick or unable to attend Mass. This is an especially important ministry which maintains the spiritual and community links with our church. Training is available. The schedule is rotating and is created by the ministry leader.

This ministry consists of many devoted people who pray for those in need. When prayer requests are received, they are sent to the prayer ministry group via email or telephone. At least 15 minutes of prayer a day for a person or intention that has been brought to the church's attention is asked.

This group combines a love of knitting or crocheting with a prayerful ministry that reaches out to those in need of comfort. In this spiritual ministry, prayer intentions are incorporated into the creation of shawls. Completed shawls are blessed and passed on to the intended recipients

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA) ADULT SPONSOR Elizabeth Fallon, Director of Faith Formation 315.652.1094 Email: [email protected]

The Adult Sponsor is a confirmed Catholic who is a person willing to be a friend, witness, companion and guide for a man or woman through the various stages of the RCIA program. Sponsors do not teach, but rather accompany the person seeking initiation on their faith journey. An adult sponsor must be confirmed and age 16 and

older; needs to interview with the Director of Faith Formation and attend safe environment training and retraining as needed.

Members of the RCIA team have the responsibility of helping RCIA candidates prepare for the sacraments of baptism, First Communion and Confirmation.

Catechists (confirmed and age 21 and older) review and teach children (age 7 -17) and/ or adults (age 18 and older) with the provided lesson plan and activities provided by the Director of Faith Formation.

Volunteers cook for and/or deliver a meal (homemade or store-bought) to parishioners at a time of sickness, crisis, or because of other needs. Volunteers pick the day that is convenient for him/herself to cook and/or deliver the meal.

Monthly one-hour meetings to share ideas who others who have the desire to share and the spread the Good News and to develop ways to bring our community back to the Lord. Volunteers promote, through prayer and parish activities, the goals of Catholic evangelization: sharing Christ to bring about in all Catholics a strong enthusiasm for their faith; to invite all people to hear the message of salvation in Jesus Christ; and to foster Gospel values in our society.

The Social Committee promotes parish community spirit by organizing social activities,

such as monthly Coffee and Donuts after Sunday Mass, a Chili Cook-Off, ice cream socials, and lasagna, pot luck, and steak dinners. The committee members plan and execute event hospitality (decorations, food and beverages) as well as assist in the set-up and clean-up.

The Stewardship Committee assists in evaluating requests for one-time financial support from individuals and families with emergency needs. The Committee also evaluates requests for financial assistance from local groups and organizations as part of overseeing the budgeted stewardship parish funds.

Ushers assist at a Mass of their choice. They collect the offertory; invite people to bring up gifts; and handle any emergency situations as needed. The schedule is rotating and is created by the parish office

The Veterans Ministry provides assistance for all veterans and family members seeking information about their benefits. This includes reviewing paperwork and applications as well as connecting the family directly with personnel within the Veterans Administration. Fellow veterans are also available if any veteran would like to talk about their experiences in theater or upon their return home.

Volunteers help with daily/weekly in-house church projects that may include painting, gardening, carpentry, cleaning, set-up for church events or other tasks deemed necessary by the committee leader.

Volunteers help out around the church property for in-house projects that may include plumbing, electrical, painting, gardening, general construction, carpentry, masonry or sewing. Events and task lists are scheduled by the Building and Grounds Committee as needed.

The Women’s Fellowship Group consist of women who meet for prayer, scripture sharing, and discussions on how to live out our Catholic faith in their daily lives, through spiritual support and sharing.

Youth Ministry is a group for students in Grades 9 - 12 interested in social, service and faith experiences with other parish youth.
