The song peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of April 22, 1978, making it kansas's only single to reach the top ten in the US. The 45-a-minute single was certified Gold for sale to one million RIAA units shortly after its high popularity as a hit single. More than 25 years later, the RIAA certified Gold Digital Format downloading songs, Kansas' only single to make it certified on September 17, 2008. The Kansas version of Inspiration The title of the song is a biblical reference, paraphrasing Ecclesiastes: I thought about everything that is achieved by man on earth, and I have come to the conclusion that everything he has achieved is useless - as the pursuit of the wind! Meditation on mortality and the inevitability of death, the lyrical theme bears a striking resemblance to the famous biblical passages of Genesis 3:19 (... for dust you art, and to dust shalt you return.) and Ecclesiastes 3:20 (All go to one place. mighty fall at last and they like dust in front of the wind.) and from a book of Indian poetry that includes a line for all we dust in the wind. Writing/record/influence of the Kansas band comment on the success of Dust in the Wind in Dust in the Wind (in 1979): I thought Dust in the Wind would be a hit from the beginning. It defies the basic formulas - Formula Boston, Alien, Hearts - which most groups try to follow. They don't understand that it's not a formula, it's a song. Phil Ehart (in 1989): We are a hard rock band that is known mainly for the ballad we did a decade ago. We're an album group and it's an accident, if any, our songs were a hit. Rich Williams (in 2010): Our hits hits by accident. Dust in the Wind and Carry On Wayward Son are not the formula of songs. They were flukes. Kerry Livgren designed the guitar line for Dust in the Wind as a finger-picking exercise. His wife, Vicci, heard what he was doing, noticed that the melody was good, and encouraged him to write lyrics for him. Livgren wasn't sure if his bandmates were sniffing, as it was a departure from their corporate identity. After Kansas rehearsed all the songs meant to be recorded in June and July 1976, Livgren performed Dust in the Wind for his bandmates, who after a moment of stunned silence asked, Kerry, where was that? Kansas guitarist Rich Williams recalled that Livgren played his bandmates a real rough record, which he played on an old reel to shake. He just muttered the lyrics, but even hearing it in this naked form... We said: This is our next single. Recorded at Woodland Studios in Nashville, Dust in the Wind included the electric guitar of maestro Livgren, who played the Martin D-28 acoustic guitar borrowed from Williams: highlighted by Robbie Steinhardt's electric violin work, the track included Steve Walsh as vocalist, despite the fact that it was recorded after Walsh immediately resigned his bandmate Walsh's 1977 Departure from Kansas last month. In fact, he switched to the second choice in favor of cutting out the title of his parent album, Dust in the Wind began to receive radio airwaves as a track of the album, which affected the underperforming performance of the single Point of No Return, which dropped out of the Top 40 from the peak of the Billboard Hot 100 No 29 in the week when the single Dust in the Wind debuted at number 81 on Hot 100 211. , 1978. On the Hot 100 of April 1, 1978, Dust in the Wind reached No. 10-best No.11 peak of the 1977 Kansas breakout hit Carry on Wayward Son - rising to a hot 100 peak of No.6 with a total of ten stints for seven weeks. Dust in the Wind will remain the highest single on the Kansas charts, with only two of the band's next five Top 40 hits reaching the Top 20, Play the Game Tonight and All I Wanted, with matching hot 100 peaks at No.17 and No.19. Billboard praised evocative lyrics, catchy melody, as well as vocal performance and how stringed instruments evoke the mood. Kansas also released a live version of Dust in the Wind on its album Two for the Show and a symphonic version on Always Never the Same.
