  • Abstract Pray the Gay Away
ABSTRACT PRAY THE GAY AWAY: RHETORICAL DILEMMAS OF THE AMERICAN EX-GAY MOVEMENT by Travis Allan Webster The Ex-Gay Movement marks a contemporary, traditionally North American emergence of “reparative” therapies and ministries that attempt to convert gay men and lesbians into “straight” identities. Pray the Gay Away theorizes these reparative rhetoric(s) as arenas that create discursive spaces of tension—what I call “second closets”—for “ex-gays” in virtual and material contexts. Through digital, rhetorical analyses, this thesis investigates the performative and linguistic reactions of ex-gays exhibited in online testimonies on pro-ex-gay websites, while examining rhetoric(s) of counter-hegemonic, online communities that seek to work against the Ex-Gay Movement. • Speaking Right
CHAPTER 1 Speaking Right If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. —2 Chronicles 7:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spir- itually discerned. —1 Corinthians 2:14 Queer Is as Queer Does In the Southern Baptist church of my youth I never heard any of the graphic descriptions of same-sex sexual practices that have been commonplace in the years since. I knew that although there are many sins that grieve Jesus, homosexuality is particularly loathsome, perhaps not only to his people but also to the creator him- self. This I learned in the indirect way that constitutes much socialization and folk knowledge transmission. In the rare moments when Southern Baptist elders spoke of homosexuality, even if they denied that it was any worse than, say, bearing false witness or lusting (heterosexually) in one’s heart, they managed to convey the op- posite. As we listened, we knew that God saved his most severe disapprobation for homosexuals. And perhaps we even doubted that homosexuals could really be saved, not because sexuality is inextricable from the impressive constellation of traits and feelings that constitute the self but because homosexuality is so, well, icky. As a teenaged “prehomosexual,” I was alert to every pronouncement— indeed, to every unspoken nuance—on the subject.

Volume #3 Issue #8/ August, 2013 from telegraph.co.uk POPE FRANCIS REACHES OUT TO GAYS Pope Francis appears to have softened the Catholic Church’s attitude towards homosexuality and gay priests, in a remarkably candid interview given to journalists aboard the papal plane as he returned to Rome from his week-long trip to Brazil. by Nick Squires, Rio de Janeiro In the first press conference of his four month papacy, the 76-year-old pontiff said it was not for him to judge if someone was homosexual. “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” Francis asked, as he returned from the first overseas trip since being elected Pope in March. He said there should be no discrimination against gays, but also reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s universal catechism, which says that while homosexual orientation is not sinful, homosexual acts are. He was much more conciliatory than his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, who signed a document in 2005 that said men with deep-rooted homosexual tendencies should not be priests. Cont’d on page 2 Page 2 POPE FRANCES Cont’d from page 1 The Pope was asked about long-standing claims that there is a powerful “gay lobby” within the Vatican. In June, he himself acknowledged that such a lobby existed in the Curia, the Vatican’s secretive administration. On the plane, he said the gay lobby was a problem — not so much because the people involved were homosexual, but because of the machinations that they got up to within the Vatican.

  • Finally Free” Is Dedicated to Stuart Mathis, a Gay Mormon from San Francisco Who Commit- Ted Suicide Because He Was Unable to Change His Sexual Orientation
finally Personal Stories: How Love andfree Self-Acceptance Saved Us from “Ex-Gay” Ministries Dedication Stuart Mathis “Finally Free” is dedicated to Stuart Mathis, a gay Mormon from San Francisco who commit- ted suicide because he was unable to change his sexual orientation. In his suicide note, he expressed his anguish over his church and society not accepting him for who he was. Mathis wrote: “The church has no idea that as I type this letter, there are surely boys and girls on their cal- lused knees imploring God to free them from this pain. They hate themselves. They retire to bed with their fingers pointed to their heads in the form of a gun. I am now free. I am no longer in pain and I no longer hate myself. As it turns out, God never intended for me to be straight. Perhaps my death might be a catalyst for some good.” While Mathis believes he is now “free,” we hope this publication will help others real- ize that there are alternative paths to freedom and acceptance. The following essays are illustrations of how some people overcame their torment and went on to live healthy, productive lives as “out” gay men and lesbians. In dedicating “Finally Free” to Stuart Mathis, we hope to help him achieve his final wish of accomplishing “some good.” 2 finally Personal Stories: How Love andfree Self-Acceptance Saved Us from “Ex-Gay” Ministries Special Thanks Dedication .................................................................... 2 We acknowledge the Human Rights Campaign’s Communications Associate Introduction .................................................................. 6 Director Wayne Besen for spearheading the research and writing.

  • Confess the Gay Away? Media, Religion, and the Political Economy of Ex-Gay Therapy
Confess the Gay Away? Media, Religion, and the Political Economy of Ex-gay Therapy Michael Thorn A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO April 2015 ©Michael Thorn, 2015 ii Abstract The “ex-gay” movement does not encourage people to pray the gay away but confess the gay away. As a loose organization of mostly Christian ministries and psychotherapy practices that offers “freedom from homosexuality,” the movement offers religious and psychological confessions of sin and disease and testimonies of truth and belief as technologies of both self- sacrifice and identity formation. The aim is to control unwanted same-sex desire through life- long labour and struggle so as to sacrifice one’s gay or lesbian identity for an ex-gay identity. However, in the debate surrounding the movement, those opposed use confessions of trauma and harm, and testimonies of their own truth and belief, to try and sacrifice the movement in favour of gay and lesbian identities. Confession and testimony, then, which are two sides of the same coin, underlie the discourses and practices of all involved in ex-gay truth games. In the 1970s and 80s the ex-gay movement operated in the shadows of Christianity as an embarrassing secret. This dissertation analyzes the movement from the 1990s, when, in alliance with the Christian Right, it “came out of the closet” through a cross-platform advertising campaign that generated fifteen years’ worth of “earned media” in news and popular culture entertainment.
