CHAPTER 3 TSUKUSHI: ISLE OF UNKNOWN FIRES rom Saga City, near the Yayoi remains of Yoshinogari, the main Froad north heads across the plain and then winds through wooded mountains before reaching the north Kyushu coast. The spectacular stretch of coastline here in Karatsu Bay is called Niji no Matsubara, or ‘Rainbow Forest of Pines’ after its long bow-shaped beach flanked by trees. Its sheltered position makes it second perhaps only to Hakata Bay further to the east as a safe haven for ships. Today the journey from Saga features a recently built landmark as the road runs through the mountains to the sea. Around a corner on the approach to a services area near the town of Kyūragi, an impressive white statue looms into view. Standing forty-six feet high and rotating gently, this giant figure of a young woman – wearing loose robes and with one hand held aloft – recalls at first glance the Statue of Liberty, until closer inspection reveals she is waving a cloth. This is Sayō-hime, the celebrated beauty who, according to legend, captured the heart of the general of the Yamato army when he passed this way in 537.1 Ōtomo Sadehiko, a renowned military leader, was bound for Karatsu to lead his troops across the sea to fight in the Korean peninsula. Shortly before leaving he married Sayō-hime, and so she joined him in Karatsu as the expedition prepared to embark. Her statue recalls the scene when, as Sadehiko’s ship set sail, she climbed a hill near the shore and waved farewell from the top.

In order to understand the characteristics of this sea, principal component analysis (PCA) was utilized using 11 water quality parameters; transparency, temperature, salini- ty, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), + − − ammonium-nitrogen ( NH4 -N), nitrate-nitrogen ( NO3 -N), nitrite-nitrogen ( NO2 -N), phosphate- 3− phosphorus, ( PO4 -P) and silica. PCA conveyed the amount of nutrients originating from the river, the organic pollution level, and seasonal changes. Subsequently, principal component scores were calculated for each point. It was concluded that the Ariake Sea environment has been affected by two main factors, which are the nutrients from the Chikugo River and anticlockwise tidal residual flow.

The studies on the talitroides by Iwasa (1934, 1939), Morino (1975, 1976), Hirayama (1980), and Hiwatari and Kajihara (198la, b) were restricted to the materials in the beach and the sublittoral. In addition to these works some short reports have been pub lished for Japanese gammaridean fauna (Stephensen 1932, 1938a, 1944a, Dahl 1944, J.L. Barnard 1967a, Nagata 1959, 1960, 196la, b, etc.). Despite of these pioneer works, our knowledge on the Japanese gammaridean fauna is still insuffi cient since only restricted area have hitherto been surveyed. The Japanese Archi pelago streches from the subtropical region to the cold temperate region, and is under complex influences of strong warm and cold currents.

Failure Knowledge Database / 100 Selected Cases The fishery damage by National Isahaya Bay Reclamation Work 【 At the Isahaya Bay in Nagasaki Prefecture from April 14 in 1997～】 Masahiko KUNISHIMA・Michihide MIURA (*1) In spite of the opposition from many people involved in the fishing industry and local people, the water gate of the Isahaya Bay salt pan embankment was closed on April 14 in 1997. The subject areas of this plan are Isahaya City, Moriyama Town, Takaki Town, Agatsuma Town, and Aino Town in Nagasaki Prefecture (Fig.3 reference). Following this National Isahaya Bay Reclamation Work was started whose content of the construction is creating the reclamation farmland of about 700 hectares inside ( Fig.1～3 reference ). The total cost is about 250 billion yen. Completion is due in fiscal 2006, and over 90% of the construction already ended by 2004. According to "the national Isahaya Bay land improvement work changing plan" announced in the year-end of 1999, the purpose of this project is “① Making come true the agriculture with the high productivity by developing the large-scale flat superior farmland which has the regulating reservoir and the water whose source is the regulating reservoir. ② strengthening the disaster prevention function against the storm tide, the flood, and the poor-drainage in the back swamp. ".
