CHAPTER 3 TSUKUSHI: ISLE OF UNKNOWN FIRES rom Saga City, near the Yayoi remains of Yoshinogari, the main Froad north heads across the plain and then winds through wooded mountains before reaching the north Kyushu coast. The spectacular stretch of coastline here in Karatsu Bay is called Niji no Matsubara, or ‘Rainbow Forest of Pines’ after its long bow-shaped beach flanked by trees. Its sheltered position makes it second perhaps only to Hakata Bay further to the east as a safe haven for ships. Today the journey from Saga features a recently built landmark as the road runs through the mountains to the sea. Around a corner on the approach to a services area near the town of Kyūragi, an impressive white statue looms into view. Standing forty-six feet high and rotating gently, this giant figure of a young woman – wearing loose robes and with one hand held aloft – recalls at first glance the Statue of Liberty, until closer inspection reveals she is waving a cloth. This is Sayō-hime, the celebrated beauty who, according to legend, captured the heart of the general of the Yamato army when he passed this way in 537.1 Ōtomo Sadehiko, a renowned military leader, was bound for Karatsu to lead his troops across the sea to fight in the Korean peninsula. Shortly before leaving he married Sayō-hime, and so she joined him in Karatsu as the expedition prepared to embark. Her statue recalls the scene when, as Sadehiko’s ship set sail, she climbed a hill near the shore and waved farewell from the top. -

Accepted 23 August 2013 Three species of marine Amphipoda, Peramphithoe africana, Varohios serratus and Ceradocus isimangaliso, are described as new to science and an additional 13 species are recorded from South Africa for the first time. Twelve of these new records originate from collecting expeditions to Sodwana Bay in northern KwaZulu-Natal, while one is an introduced species newly recorded from Simon’s Town Harbour. In addition, we collate all additions and revisions to the regional amphipod fauna that have taken place since the last major monographs of each group and produce a comprehensive, updated faunal list for the region. A total of 483 amphipod species are currently recognized from continental South Africa and its Exclusive Economic Zone . Of these, 35 are restricted to freshwater habitats, seven are terrestrial forms, and the remainder either marine or estuarine. The fauna includes 117 members of the suborder Corophiidea, 260 of the suborder Gammaridea, 105 of the suborder Hyperiidea and a single described representative of the suborder Ingolfiellidea. -

Cadien, LACSD 22Jul2004 (revised 2Mar2015) Preface The purpose of this review is to bring together information on all of the species reported to occur in the NEP fauna. It is not a straight path to the identification of your unknown animal. It is a resource guide to assist you in making the required identification in full knowledge of what the possibilities are. Never forget that there are other, as yet unreported species from the coverage area; some described, some new to science. The natural world is wonderfully diverse, and we have just scratched its surface. Introduction to the Ampeliscoidea The superfamily Ampeliscoidea consists solely of the family Ampeliscidae. It is well represented in the NEP, with about 50 species distributed among three genera. There has been at least one species introduced into California waters from the North Atlantic (Chapman 1988), Ampelisca abdita, which forms dense aggregations within San Francisco Bay. It is also distributed outside the bay, but penetration of non-embayment waters has not been extensive. The superfamily was established by Bousfield (1979) when he broadened the scope of his phyletic reevaluations beyond the limits of the Gammaridae s. l. addressed previously (Bousfield 1977). In addition to his diagnosis he characterized the Ampeliscoidea as “world-wide, marine coastal and abyssal: building sac-like tubes in soft stable sediments.” He considered the group -

The Occurrence of Atylus ekmani (Gurjanova, 1938) (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Gammaridea) from Southern Hokkaido, Japan Mika OKADO* Abstract Atylus ekmani (Gurjanova, 1938), (Arophipoda, Gammaridea, Atylidae) was collected from the Pacific coast of southern Hokkaido for the first time. It is described and illustrated on the basis of six specimens. This species is characterized by its dorsal teeth formula: 1, 1, 2 pleosome and 1 urosome median tooth/teeth on pleon 3, urosome 1, and fused urosomes 2 and 3, respectively. The sexual dimorphism, coloration of the living animal, and some biological aspects are noted. Introduction The genus Atylus, which belongs to the dexaminoid family Atylidae (Bousfield, 1982; Schram, 1986; Bousfield and Kendall, in prep.), is now represented by 34 species worldwide (Barnard and Karaman, 1991; Hirayama, 1986). Up to the present, eight species of this genus have been reported from the northern part of the Western Pacific (Barnard and Karaman, 1991), and two of those were reported from Japanese waters: Atylus japonicus Nagata, 1961 from the Seto Inland Sea; A. occidentalis Hirayama, 1986 from Otsuchi Bay, northern Japan. During a survey of the fauna around the Usujiri Marine Biological Laboratory of Hokkaido University in 1991, six specimens of Atylus ekmani (Gurjanova, 1938) were obtained. -

Water quality data have been generated from several points in this area for over 30 years by the Fukuoka, Saga, Kumamoto, and Nagasaki prefectures. In order to understand the characteristics of this sea, principal component analysis (PCA) was utilized using 11 water quality parameters; transparency, temperature, salini- ty, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), + − − ammonium-nitrogen ( NH4 -N), nitrate-nitrogen ( NO3 -N), nitrite-nitrogen ( NO2 -N), phosphate- 3− phosphorus, ( PO4 -P) and silica. PCA conveyed the amount of nutrients originating from the river, the organic pollution level, and seasonal changes. Subsequently, principal component scores were calculated for each point. It was concluded that the Ariake Sea environment has been affected by two main factors, which are the nutrients from the Chikugo River and anticlockwise tidal residual flow.
