In writing this thesis, I hope that I have, in some way, managed to explain the reasons for this cultural diversity. This thesis would not have been written without the assistance of my two supervisors, Professor Mike Cronin and Professor Matthew Taylor. Professor Cronin’s assistance and knowledge has transformed the way I think about history, society and sport while Professor Taylor’s expertise has also made me look at the writing of sports history and the development of society in a different way.

COMHAIRLE CHONTAE DHUN NA nGALL (DONEGAL COUNTY COUNCIL) ROADS ACT 1993, SECTION 75, ROADS REGULATIONS 1994, ARTICLE 12 TEMPORARY CLOSING OF ROADS KILLYGORDON, CO DONEGAL Notice is hereby given that Donegal County Council has made an Order to have the following roads closed to traffic from Monday 24th April 2017 until Friday 12th May 2017 (Inclusive) between 6.30am and 6pm daily. For Phases 1, 2a, 2b & 3 (The Stranorlar to Killygordon Road will be closed). The N-15-32, N-15-33, N-15-34 will be closed between Stranorlar and Killygordon. Alternative Routes: The alternative route for HGVs will be from McClay’s Corner, Stranorlar to Letterkenny (N- 13) and from Letterkenny to Lifford (N14). The alternative route for cars/ light vehicles will be from “Millbrae to Dreenan (L-3044-4)”, “Dreenan to Crossroads Village (L-3044)” Crossroads Village to Killygordon (L-2944).
