The youngest of 2Y seven children, he displayed musical talent at the age of three, and was developed as an infant prodigy. While still a very small child, he was taken to Berlin, where he played for Joseph Joachim. Joachim was much impressed with the boy, and sent him to Heinrich Barth for a full course of piano study. He also received instruction in composition and harmony from Max Bruch and Robert Kahn. He made his first public appearance in Berlin at the age of eleven, play ing a concerto of Mozart with Joachim conducting. His remarkable career as a traveling virtuoso, which has taken him to many countries, dates from this occasion. He first visited the United States in 1906. In recent years he has made this country his home. His first appearance with the Cleveland Orchestra was on November 25, 1937, when he performed the Brahms Concerto No. 2 in B fiat major. On January 12, 1939, he played the Tchaikovsky B fiat minor Concerto with the Orchestra; on February 22, 1940, Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto; on Janu ary 29, 1942, Chopin’s Concerto in E minor and Szymanowski’s Symphony Concertante; on April 1, 1943, the Concerto No. 2 in C minor of Rachmaninoff (in a memorial performance); on December 2, 1943, Brahms’ Concerto in B flat major; on November 9, 1944, Mozart’s Concerto in A major (K. 488) and Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini; on January 23, 1947, Brahms’ Concerto in B fiat major; on March 24, 1949, Tchaikovsky’s Con certo in B flat minor; and on April 9, 1953, Brahms’ Concerto in B fiat major.
