    A NARRATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE JERUSALEM COUNCIL DISCOURSES: TABLE FELLOWSHIP AND THE IMPLICIT THEOLOGY OF SALVATION MICHAEL MAHAN This study undertakes a narrative reading of the text of Acts 15:1-31 and develops the construct of implicit theology, defining it as generic, usually unspoken ideas about the theological realm that have a measurable effect on individual and congregational behavior. The reading of the Jerusalem council narrative (Acts 15:1-31) highlights three points of view regarding law, grace, and fellowship considerations. This study finds that one chief thread of the narrative is the issues of the practical matter of fellowship between Gentiles and law-following Jewish Christians. The practical issues in the narrative reveal the main narrative thread of the contrast of differing perspectives on the theology of salvation. Based on the council narrative, it is suggested that in applied settings, the implicit theology of salvation is a balance between grace and law rather than a dichotomous, theological position. This study proposes the development of instruments measuring implicit theology in congregational studies, potentially revealing implicit theological tenets underlying observable congregational characteristics.     ACTS 14:1-20 A. Paul and Barnabas In Iconium: (14:1-6) 1. Acts 14:1 - And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed. a. Paul and Barnabas go again into another synagogue. The gospel's power is so convincing that a large number of Jews and Gentiles believed. b. [so spake] is referring to the manner in which he spoke. Paul not only spoke with clarity, but also with zeal and excitement. (1) **Their success wasn't due to organization, entertainment, amazing music, or great oratory. These things were not part of a synagogue! It was solely the power of their gospel message. (2) **We have to continually remind ourselves that God's Word is sufficient to draw, convict, convince, and save-grow people. It is the Word of God that anchors one's soul. c. Paul was not offering the Kingdom nor Israel's prophetic program to these Jews. Also, it is good to remember that before Israel was set aside (after Acts 7), she had a spiritual influence upon many Gentiles. Many Gentiles had heard of God's dealings with Israel. So the synagogue was a good place to find both Jews and Gentiles. It says there was [a great multitude]. 2. Acts 14:2 - But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren. a. It seems that wherever and whenever God is moving through His believers, Satan raises his ugly head to try and prevent truth from converting or entering the minds/hearts of people.

We are going to begin by studying the first journey. In my view, the journeys are very exciting because God used them to spread the good news of Christ all over the known world. I invite you to turn in your Bible to Acts 13 as we begin. This is going to be a jet tour from high altitude. We are doing this because I want to you to see the big picture of Paul’s first missionary journey. We will look at some general principles at the end of the message and make application to ourselves today. A summary of Paul’s 1st Missionary Journey The first missionary journey took place from approximately A.D. 46-48. It all started in the Syrian city of Antioch near the coast about three hundred miles north of Jerusalem. Antioch is where many Christians had gone when the great persecution started in Jerusalem after the death of Stephen. Where Jerusalem was the hub of Jews who became Christians, Antioch became the hub for Gentiles who became Christians. At some point after his conversion, Paul, also known as Saul was contacted by Barnabas and brought to Antioch where they spent a year training new believers in the faith.     Acts Chapter 14 Acts 14:1 "And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed." “Iconium”: A cultural melting pot of native Phrygians, Greeks, Jews, and Roman colonists, located 80 miles southeast of Pisidian Antioch. We see here the synagogue being opened to the Greeks, as well as the Jews. It seemed that Paul was under great anointing of God at this time, and many were brought into the numbers of the Christians. Paul is preaching the Word. Many who are receiving this Word are saved. Remember, these disciples had been filled again with the Spirit and with joy about the time they came to Iconium. In (Romans 10), we read: Romans 10:14 "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?" It is necessary to have a preacher. By the foolishness of preaching, men are won to God. Acts 14:2 "But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren." These Jews were jealous, because the body of believers in Christ was growing far more rapidly than the synagogue. These Jews put a question into the minds of the Gentiles who were not familiar with the Scriptures. This is still going on today. Satan never changes. He planted a question in Eve's mind, and that has been his plan from the beginning.
