We flew from Delhi to Guwahati, located in the far northeast of India. A long drive later through the hectic traffic of this enjoyable country, we arrived at our lodge in the evening. (Photo by tour participant Robert Warren) We enjoyed three full days of the wildlife and avifauna spectacles of the famous Kaziranga National Park. This park is one of the last easily accessible places to find the endangered Indian One-horned Rhinoceros together with a healthy population of Asian Elephant and Asiatic Wild Buffalo. We saw plenty individuals of all species; the rhino especially made an impression on all of us. It is such an impressive piece of evolution, a serious armored “tank”! On two mornings we loved the elephant rides provided by the park; on the back of these attractive animals we came very close to the rhinos. The fertile flood plains of the park consist of alluvial silts, exposed sandbars, and riverine flood-formed lakes called Beels. This open habitat is not only good for mammals but definitely a true gem for some great birds. Interesting but common birds included Bar-headed Goose, Red Junglefowl, Woolly-necked Stork, and Lesser Adjutant, while the endangered Greater Adjutant and Black-necked Stork were good hits in the stork section. -

We studied the cestode fauna (Platyhelminthes) of forest birds in Malaysia (Selangor) collected during a field trip in 2010. Ninety birds of 37 species were examined and global prevalence of cestodes was 15.3%. Five new taxa are described: Emberizotaenia aeschlii sp. nov. (Dilepididae) from Tricholestes criniger (Blyth, 1845) (Pycnonotidae); Anonchotaenia kornyushini sp. nov. (Paruterinidae) from Trichastoma malaccense (Hartlaub, 1844) (Pellorneidae); Biuterina jensenae sp. nov. (Paruterinidae) from Chloropsis cochinchinensis (Gmelin, 1789) (Irenidae); Raillietina hymenolepidoides sp. nov. (Davaineidae) and R. mahnerti sp. nov. (Davaineidae) from Chalcophaps indica (Linnaeus, 1758) (Columbidae). Ophryocotyloides dasi Tandan & Singh, 1964 is reported from Psilopogon henricii (Temminck, 1831) (Ramphastidae). Several other taxa in Dilepididae, Davaineidae, Paruterinidae, Hymenolepididae and Mesocestoididae, either potentially new or poorly known, are also reported. The richness described from this small collection hints at the potentially huge unknown parasite diversity from wild hosts in this part of the world. -

Birds play a pivotal role in the ecosystem, but in disturbed areas their roles may be limited due to the changes of their natural habitats. This paper studies the birds' habitats in Simalungun and Asahan Districts, North Sumatra. The study was conducted in four habitats: natural forest, rubber agroforests, rubber monoculture plantations and emplacement areas. The birds were observed using descriptive survey methods by implementing a quick biodiversity survey, data were collected along one km transect. The results showed that in total, 142 species of birds from 42 families were observed in the four habitats. Natural forests had the highest diversity of bird species, followed by rubber agroforests, emplacement areas and rubber plantations, with a Shannon-Wiener index of 3.8, 3.6, 3.0 and 2.9, respectively. Regarding the IUCN red list species, 12 bird species of near- threatened status and 2 species of vulnerable status were recorded. Based on CITES categories, one species was listed in the Appendix I, 12 species were classified in Appendix II and 26 bird species were protected under Indonesian regulations. -

II, I S S U E 15 FLORA OF THE WEEK Cinnamomum tamala Indian bay leaf (Tezapatta) Scientific Classification Cinnamomum tamala, Indian bay leaf, also known as tejpat, tezapatta, Malabar leaf, Indian bark, Indian Kingdom Plantae cassia, or malabathrum, is a tree. It can grow up to 20 m (66 ft) Clade Magnoliids tall. Order Laurales Leaves- Its leaves have a clove-like aroma with a hint of peppery taste; Family Lauraceae they are used for culinary and medicinal purposes. The leaves Genus Cinnamomum are thich,4 to 7 inch in length with deep vein like structure in Species tamala the upper surface and have a strong odor. Flowers and Fruits- Flowers are tiny greenish yellow. Flowers are seen in clusters and have a strong odor. Flowers are seen in month of January and fruits appear in the month of May-August. Fruits are round purple colored and has a single seed inside. Good Source of Vitamin- Fresh leaves are a very rich source of vitamin-C and vitamin- A. Vitamin-C is powerful natural antioxidant, immune booster, wound healing and antiviral effects. Vitamin-A is natural antioxidant and essential for normal eyesight. -

Abstract A checklist is the first metric of the biodiversity of an area. Here, we present a checklist of the birds of Karnataka State (India; hereinafter Karnataka). All references that deal with the collection of specimens, and all online and published sources that deal with photographs, have been collated as supporting evidence. Karnataka has 531 species of birds, 16 of which are endemic to the Western Ghats, and 27 species that fall under the various threatened categories of the IUCN. The inclusion of 524 species have been supported with collected specimens, or with clear photographs. Accepted sight records (seven species), and a secondary list of unconfirmed records are also discussed. THE PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIPS OF THE PICIFORMES (CLASS AVES) SHARONF. SIMPSON1 AND JOEL CRACRAFT2 Department of Anatomy, University of lllinois at the Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois 60680 USA, and Division of Birds, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois 60605 USA ABST•CT.--The phylogenetic relationships of the avian order Piciformes were studied using a cladistic analysis of the skeletal morphology. We hypothesize that the piciforms constitute a monophyletic group on the basis of possessinga unique flexor tendon pattern in the hindlimb, a M. flexor hallucis longus with three heads of origin, zygodactyly, and a well-developed sehnen- halter on the outer (IV) trochlea of the tarsometatarsus.Two major lineagesare defined by osteo- logical characters,one (the Galbulae) consistingof the Galbulidae and Bucconidae,and the other (the Pici) comprising the remaining four families. Within the Pici, two lineagesare discerned:the Ramphastoidea, consistingof the Ramphastidae and the Capitonidae, and the Picoidea, which includes the Picidae and Indicatoridae. The systematic position of the fossil families Zygodactyl- idae and Primobucconidae are interpreted within the framework of the phylogenetic hypothesis for the Recent families. DESPITE the efforts of countless investigators over the last 100 yr, corroborated hypothesesabout the phylogenetic relationships of the avian higher taxa remain in short supply. Within this literature it is rare that data from different anatomical systems have been interpreted so as to provide concordant evidence supporting a specific hypothesis of genealogical relationships within a set of these higher taxa. One major reason for this is that workers have traditionally evaluated similarity without regard to the hierarchical level at which these similarities define a set of taxa, i.e. -
