History of the Nsw Short Course Cross Country HISTORY OF THE NSW SHORT COURSE CROSS COUNTRY Now known as the Short Course Cross Country Championships, this race has had a diverse history, since the inaugural race was held on August 4, 1906. Note no race held in 1992 & 1993 and state titles were not held during world war one 1914 to 1918 For the first 76 years, it was conducted over a longer distance than the main NSW Cross Country Championships, now run over the universal distance of 12 km. Different event titles have included: 10 mile track championships 10 mile Team race 2nd NSW Cross Country Championship After 59 years of being conducted over 10 miles (16km), in the 70s the distance changed to 20km, then 15km and finally 16km. The major change for the event was in 1988 when the distance dropped to 8km and it was given its current title –Short Course Since the inaugural women’s race in 1979, their distance has changed from 10km to 12km, then 6km and in 2010 to 5km. Venues The venue for the first men’s race was the Kensington Racecourse. The race was over 10 miles and much of the race was held on the road. It was an out and back course to the La Perouse Cemetery. Amazingly, the venues for the first 59 years, until 1970, were racecourses, those being: Randwick, Victoria Park, Ascot, Gosford, Canterbury, Gosford, Rosebery. From 1971 the venues have included: Centennial Park, Macquarie Uni, Auburn, Springwood, HMAS Nirimba, Narrabeen, The Crest, Nowra, Galston, Campbelltown Uni, Mt Penang, Abbotsbury & Upjohn Park.. The inaugural winner was H Morgan from the Marrickville Club who clocked 58:20 for victory. Second was J Hunter (Marrickville), 50 yards behind the winner in a time of 58:30, while third was Aberline (South Sydney) third, 300 yards behind second. East Sydney won the team’s event, each team comprising six runners, with 70 points, ahead of Marrickville Harriers (75 points) and Sydney Harriers. Other clubs competing were: Birchgrove Harriers, South Sydney, St George and Western Suburbs. The first women’s race was held in July 1979, when Sue Muir (Sutherland) ran 37:01 to win the race over 10km at Auburn. Many of the greats of NSW distance running have claimed titles, including: Andrew Wood, Alleyn Gainsford, Jack Sheaves, Donald and George Campbell, John Plummer, Dave Power, Alan Lawrence, Bob Vagg, Tony Manning, John Farrington, Rob McDonald, Lawrie Whitty, Andrew Lloyd and Jamie Harrison. Women’s winners have included: Jenny Walker, Annette Dwyer, Annette Ricardo and Michelle Dillon. In 1949, after four consecutive wins by Donald Campbell (Botany), 21-year-old John Bromley (Western Suburbs) claimed the title in a time of 55:55. Held at Randwick Racecourse Bromley beat visiting Victorian 10mile champion E Evans. Many of the Short Course Champions have represented Australia at Olympic and Commonwealth Games level, Dave Power represented Australia 1956 &1960 Olympic Games and 1958 & 1962 Commonwealth Games. The columns lists the year and date of the event, champion, club, time in minutes & seconds and the race venue. 1 The men’s list is followed by the women’s champions then venue information and key to club abbreviation with present club abbreviation. Names in bold print & underlined have claimed distance titles, while those with green print & yellow highlite are Olympians. Blue printed names have special meaning to the recorder.     Welsh Athletics Milestones Recalled by Clive Williams 1860 John Chambers holds a sports meeting at Hafod House, Aberystwyth - probably the first record of an athletics meeting being held in Wales 1865 Chambers organises “athletic sports” at Aberystwyth. 1865 William Richards, born in “Glamorgan” sets a world record for the mile with 4 mins. 17 ¼ seconds. 1871 St. David’s College Lampeter and Llandovery College hold athletics “sports” meetings. 1875 Newport Athletic Club formed and holds “athletic sports.” 1877 Cardiff-born William Gale achieves the phenomenal deed of walking 1,500 miles in 1,000 hours. He was the world’s leading pedestrian. 1879 Llanfair Caereinion Powys-born George Dunning sets a world 40 miles record at Stamford Bridge of 4:50.12. 1880 Newport AC represented by Richard Mullock at the formation of the AAA at The Randolph Hotel, Oxford - Chambers also there. 1881 Dunning effectively sets an inaugural world record for the half-marathon when he runs 1:13.46 on a track at Stamford Bridge. The distance is actually 13 miles 440 yards, i.e. further than the designated half marathon distance of 13 miles 192.5 yards. 1881 Dunning becomes the first Welsh born athlete to win the (English) National cross country title. 1882 Roath (Cardiff) Harriers formed. They amalgamated with Birchgrove (Cardiff) Harriers in 1968 to form Cardiff AAC.1890. 1890 Will Parry, born in Buttington, near Welshpool wins the (English) National cross country title for a third successive year. 1893 First Welsh amateur track championships held as part of an open sports meeting. Just 2 events held - 100 yards and mile won by Charles Thomas (Reading AC) and Hugh Fairlamb (Roath).
