InfoEx Industry Standard for an Extraordinary Industry InfoEx is a cooperative service managed by the Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA), providing a daily exchange of technical snow, weather and avalanche information for subscribers. Subscribers are individual CAA Professional Members, or organizations and commercial businesses (e.g. backcountry guiding companies, ski hills, BC Highways, Parks Canada) employing CAA Professional Members whose operations require actively managing avalanche hazards. InfoEx gives avalanche professionals access to data that is accurate, relevant and real time. This knowledge improves each subscriber’s awareness of the conditions, greatly enhancing their ability to manage their local avalanche risks. InfoEx also serves as one of the key sources of data used by Avalanche Canada’s (AC) and other organizations public avalanche forecasters to produce and verify their products. The value of the InfoEx contribution to the AC public avalanche bulletin is estimated at an excess of $2 million annually. The significance of this contribution by avalanche professionals and their employers to public avalanche safety in the mountains of Canada cannot be overstated. Alberta Ski Resorts on the Eastern Slopes and Environmental Advocacy: Conservation Politics and Tourism Developments in Kananaskis Country, 1980-2000 By Michelle Nicole Murphy A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Recreation and Leisure Studies Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation University of Alberta © Michelle Nicole Murphy, 2018 ii Abstract This study investigates ski resort development and proposals on the eastern slopes of Alberta between 1980 and 2000 with a specific focus on Kananaskis Country. It highlights issues between conservation imperatives and recreation and sport development. It examines the site selection for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games to uncover the provincial government and Olympic Organizer’s lack of concern towards environmental issues and disregard for concerns brought up by environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs), recreational skiers, and the public. An analysis of conservation politics regarding the site selection of Mount Allan, the potential use of Mount Whitehorn (Lake Louise), and the Spray Lakes Ski Resort proposal looks closely at the strategies used by ENGOs to advocate for the environment. Through an exploration of conservation politics and land-use debates, this research project probes the role of Kananaskis Country as a multiple-use landscape to argue that between 1980 and 2000, a pro-development provincial government placed minimal value on environmental knowledge and expertise and chose to sacrifice important Alberta mountain habitats for ski resort development and economic gains. This was contrary to opposition from ENGOs, like the Sierra Club of Western Canada, and the public, who utilized strategic discourse to draw attention to environmental threats as a form of resistance to government decision- making.

After all, the granddaddy of the entire parks system, Banff National Park, is practically our backyard, and there are sev- eral other mountain parks within a half day’s drive of here, offering a wealth of scenery to take in and terrain to explore.
