Rebeca Sosa has combined inspired government leadership with a commitment to the local public school Dr. Thomas A. Breslin has served FIU in a variety of roles for nearly four decades. His leadership in growing district to impact South Florida in visible and productive ways. FIU’s research enterprise and guiding the efforts of the university in its quest for a medical school have left an indelible mark on one of the country’s largest universities. A Miami-Dade County commissioner for the past 12 years and the governing body’s chairwoman since 2012, Sosa represents District 6, which includes the City of Miami, Coral Gables, West Miami, Breslin joined FIU as a visiting assistant professor in the Department of History in January 1976. Barbara Bader has spent nearly 40 years empowering thousands of students, faculty and staff through her varied roles at FIU.

Bader came to FIU in January 1974 and served as a faculty member in the College of Education until 1987 when she was named director of Academic Programs. In this role her primary responsibilities focused on the university’s undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered in Broward County. After serving in that capacity for 14 years, Bader assumed administrative responsibilities in the area of Academic Affairs.

Bader is the founding director of FIU’s Educational Leadership Enhancement Program, which began in 1993. Now in its 20th year, she continues to serve as its director. Building camaraderie, networking, empowerment and career advancement are among the major goals of the program, whose alumni have advanced to roles such as executive vice president, dean, vice provost, director and chairperson at FIU and other institutions of higher education.

In acknowledgment of her strong belief in mentorship and continuous efforts in that regard, Bader is a past recipient of the Florida Association of Women in Education’s (FAWE) Mentor of the Year Award. She is also a recipient of FAWE’s Presidential Award.

Bader retired from her full-time position in 2004 but she continues to work part-time for the university. She is a founding member of the university’s Tender Loving Care Brigade and is presently active in the formation of FIU’s Retiree Association. She has also participated for many years in the university’s United Way campaign.
