41 The National Honors Society was as it says in the title an honor to belong to. Why you ask? Every member belonging to this club of academically oriented students at MCHS, must maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher to even be admitted to the group. Every member put the time and effort it takes to belong to NHS. The time is enduring and the effort is strong. These students are just a few of the outstanding persons at Marian Catholic High School.

Our California Scholastic Feder ation is just another one of our great academic accomplishments here at Marian. The club led by the president Christina Fajardo, vice-president Bernadette A vecilla, treasurer Ron Gorsich and secretary Kathlyn Alvarez, has planned various activ ities, such as the major trip to Dis neyland. This club's membership requires a 3.0 or higher GPA. So it's no walk in the park to belong to this great academic club.

Under Brett Marches, this club, made up of Fil ipi nos, Chinese, Japanese, and other Asians, is here to teach their own culture to everyone. The club is led by BernadetteAvecilla, presi dent, Tiara Tesoro, vice-president, and Audrey Nery, secretary. It has succeeded in food sales and will continue to plan more events. As years pass by, we hope that this club will continue to be a part of Marian and preserve the Asian cul tures.

The Black Student Union club is made up of the African-American students at Marian. The club is one of our new clubs at Marian. The club is open to share cultural back grounds to all students just as the Asian-Pacific Islander club does. Marian is made up of many differ ent, interesting cultures. The Black Student Union enriches the cultures to a maximum.

47 Our most popular new class, without a doubt, was weightlifting class, taught and trained by coaches David (football), Marches (bas ketball), and Milke. They hope to discipline the students in the art of Physical Education. Weightlifting can be taken as a subject and also as an extra-curricular activity. The weightroom is now under recon struction for enlargement, and remodeling for comfort. New equip ment has been purchased for the use of the students belonging to the club and/or taking the class.

Drama class rejoined our curriculum as well as becoming an extra-curricular activity this year. Drama is filled with a great group of acting students. These students are taught their performing skills by Ms. Wasson, a great, talented teacher. The class itself seems to have an entertaining and positive energy towards the world of Drama.

49 Second semester Psychology started with an unusual twist. The Seniors were blessed with baby eggs. Mr. Mendes said the seniors would learn responsibili ty from this project, but in fact they learned what responsibility a baby really is. Julie Guinti vano's baby plummeted to its death the second day after birth. Ian Sutlick and Amy Alexander pleaded guilty to child neglect. Mark Bibbo's baby was serious ly injured from a crack, and Herb Chua was convicted of child abuse for tampering with Colleen Murphy's egg. All the seniors had fun and learned how to care for an egg.

51 Bonfires were pretty big for the Class of 1993 this year. Seniors got together during weekends, and kicked back in front of a roar ing fire. "It was simply a time to relax and be with friends outside the hassles of school," says Senior Xenia Trejo. Who was the arsonist behind these conflagra tions? None other than Alan "the Man" Gillett, who provided the arti cles to burn (including one couch). He found, as you can see, that even Christmas trees are ignjtable.

THE RUH ARD GUN This year's Boy' s Varsity Basketball team has a lot of talent and had a great chance at the play-offs this year. Under the new Coaching Brett Marches has introduced a run and gun system to the crusaders. The crusaders played a tough defensive game with trapping at halfcourt, they forced the other team to turnover the ball for easy Crusader bas kets. This type of defense was an asset to the Run-n-Gun. The players Bombard ed the weakened opponents with an ONSLAUGHT of 3-point bombs ... BANGO! Three point threats were Jason Martinez, Jason CA'rJ:;-. Scott, and James Mata. 66 67 HARD AT WORK This season, the girls varsity basketball team practiced hard and played to the best of their ability. The team is strong and has gained much experience playing together. In her second year of coaching varsity, Coach Brainard has done an outstanding job. She is fu ll of determination. The team is led by seniors Christina Fajardo and Ina Ceja. These two players have guided the younger players to work with each other on the court. The only new face on the team was talented Leslie Root. All in all, the team came out tough to play some very hard opponents. One member of The Lady Crusaders made All Harbor League. Indira Gue vara was selected for her scoring and rebounding ability and Ina Ceja was voted MVP by the team. Both she and Christina Fajardo will be surely missed next year. 69 HALF PINTS Marian' s Freshman Boy's Basketball team was probably one of the most suc cessful teams of the year. Led by Coach Marches' new system, th is team pros pered as their onslaught of 3-pointers destroyed opponents. The consistent play of all the members of this unit not onl y made them successful , but if kept up, wi ll certainly lead them to greater hori zons. The 1992-93 girl 's basketball season was a time for conditioning, working together as a team, hard work, and dedicati on. With the introduction of a new coach, Mr. Cosgriff, who stressed the fundamentals of the game of basketball, and the additi on of nine new players consisting of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, thi s year's J.V. showed a defi nite improvement compared to la t year' s. With the starting five, Juniors April Atali g, and Moni ca Corrales, Sophomores Rachael Goding and Vanessa Manuel, and an alternation between sophomore Dani ela MacFarland and Freshman Clari ssa Bash, the lady crusader had a great start with each game and enhanced their ability to play basketball as the end of their season came closer. With the five p's (practi ce, positioning, pu rs uit, pre severance, pati ence), they greatl y showed how much they improved both indi viduall y and as a unit. Along with the help of Sheryl Braswell , Nadi a Ayala, Carolina Salas, Theresa Villarosa, Elaine Dollente, Moni ca Hatcher, and Linda Rodri guez, they had victori es over Hoover High and lairemont. Although the scoreboard did not always show their potential or ta lent, thei r endeavor has made them the most improved team. Lastl y, the J.V . 71 PLAYOFF BOUND The varsi ty boys soccer team 1992-93 season has had a very produc ti ve team. Though they onl y had two victori es, there have been many bright spots th ro ughout the season. The team was led by captains Jere my Wright and Jason Roth who both demonstrated good leadership qualities and kept the team moti vated throughout a tough season. Roth has continued hi s great defense and scored three goals. Wright has twelve goals, leading the team and has shown superb defensive ski ll s along with hi s offensive abil ity. Defenders Mark Bibbo, Art Mar ti n, and James McElwain have played well agai nst other teams offens e . Ed the goali e, has kept Marian in many games with his ability to stop the ball. Midfielders, Pabl o Rodriguez, Jorge Cornejo, Freddy Romero and Oscar Torres have pl ayed well in the midfield and have improved th roughout the season. Cornejo leads the team in assists with eight and has six goals. Forwards, Luis Ayala, Carlos, Oscar, Jesse and Alan Gillett played strong to keep Marian's offense moving. Coach Jerry Jeremi ah and assistant coach Patty Hill have been very supportive to the team and shared with the guys their kn owledge and experi ence. Marian now has two games left, vs. Christi an and Claire mont, then the pl ayoffs. The soccer team is looking to make its thi rd CA traight trip to the pl ayoffs. 77 MCHS Baseball is in swing. This year's team is a real hopeful one. Due to all new coaches, uni form s, and a revised field . New head coach Mike Anthony and assis tant coach McBride to back him up. The relati vely new team is looking good. With a stable infield of Brian Gul li ermo, Jason Martinez, Cameron Covarrubias, and vet eran Sean Villafranca. Also strong is the rooki e outfield led by veteran Ian Sutlick. But the crusaders strong point is their pitching staff, consisting of fireball Marcos Rusi tas, Serg io Melendriz, Brian Gulliermo, and "old faith ful " -Ge1Ty Guevarra. Once shortstop Justin Villafranca has come back full strength from the D.L. li st, the cru saders have a good chance of hanging a CIF banner in the gym. This year' s team is one to look out fo r.

Team captains, Jessie Martinez and Colleen Murphy, who have played Varsity since Freshman year, hope to lead the Lady Crusaders to more victories. The team coach, Mr. Marches, has worked hard and instilled in the team a winning attitude. Returning players of varsity softball would like to thank Ms. Brainard for all she has done. They were sad to see her go but learned to accept a new coach. The team consists of Sophomores: Yazmin Decalzi and Racheal Goding; Juniors: Lori Favela, April Atalig, Verionica Carrillo, Indira Guevara, Paty Tovar, Grace Bibbo, and Yes enia Martinez; Senior : Kimi Canedo, Colleen Murphy, Marya Villarin, Dolores Rubio, Christina Fajardo, and Xenia Trejo. 80 81 MINOR LEAGUES The Junior Varsity Softball team under new leadership thi s year, managed to pull together and play as a unit. New coach, Elaine Crary, says "I think we have a lot of poten ti al". Good pitching from Jamie Foti and Cl arissa Bash helped carry the Lady Crusaders to their first wi n of the season. The team consists of mostl y freshmen and sopho mores and lacks the experi ence of juniors. But thi s was made up by a hard working attitude. If they keep up the work and stay together, this team will be known th roughout the league as a team with potential. Another team whi ch displayed hard work and good atti tude was the Junior Varsity Baseball team. Their inexperi ence was hard to recogni ze both at practi ce or at game time. The enthusiasm of each team member helped the team to play beyond what was expected. With a stable first four in the batting order, their offense helped to make up fo r their trouble in the infield . Wi th intensive infield practice and a lot of hard work on the basics they became a fl owing unit which played like a team. The promising pitching and consistent batting will surely make this team powerful in the Harbor League. CA~~ o< ~ J.V. BASEBALL • J.V. sorrBALL ~ olf

139 Lunch is always the favorite part of every students' day. This year's lunch time is 5 minutes less than last year's. Students at first had a hard time adjusting to the change especially the Seniors. But as time passed, they got used to it. Seniors usuall y go off campus during lunch, but due to the short age of time they prefer to stay in school instead. Those seniors that go off campus usually buy their food at Jack in the Box or Rally"s. Then they come back to school and find a place to munch their food. Some seni ors bring their own lunch instead to avoid the ru sh between the line in the food stand and out side at fast-food places. Although lunch is short, Seniors still think that it is the best part of the day.

Marya Villarin and GeITy Guevara are perfect examples of true tal ent. Marya exhibits her talent through drawings and paintings. She plans to use her artistry in her future career. GeITy who plays the guitar, piano, and sings, has his own band which also has great potential. The Senior class has members with talents in other areas. Christina Fajardo and Mark Bibbo were elected "Most Likely to Succeed." They both want careers where they will be happy and both want a happy family life.

148 CLASS CLOWNS

Below, Class Clowns: Tina Zamora and Alan Gillett At Right. Class Rebels: Dolores Rubio and James Mara CLASS REBELS

Every class has one - they are witty, wild, and most of all, funny . They are the class rebels and clowns: Those people who give the teacher a hard time every so often and make school just a bit more exciting for the stu dents. Our candidates for class clowns and class rebels have kept the teachers and students alive during their years at Marian with hysterical comments and hilarious antics. Their spontaneous pranks have made dull classes fun to be in because a little laughter livens us all. When asked how he felt about being chosen for class clown, Alan said, 'Tm just glad I never got in serious trouble!"

Everyone knows that the McDonald's Big Mac is a rather large ham burger. Likewise, Enrique Carmona is one of the largest people in the 1993 senior class. Usually, the Big Mac is accompanied by a side order of french fries. When picking the senior standouts, the Big Mac had to have a companion: the small fry. Like the Big Mac and small fry at McDonald's, Enrique and Sara complement each other perfectly. Smiles are like snow flakes, in that everyone's is different. When Norene Fernandez and Israel Gonzalez show us their pearly whites, the whole room notices. When we waJk around campus, it is a great feeling to see orene and Israel smile.

153 BEST

Most of us have known Christina Fajardo since grammar school. Since then she has never failed to lend a helping hand. As for the other winner of Best Personality, Ricky Trejo, there is nothing bad you can say about him. Ricky is the most easy-going, friendly guy on campus. "Most unique" is the term used to cate gorize another two students; unique fits them quite well. One recipient, Marya Villarin posed a question; "Why did these peo ple vote for me was it because of the long nose hairs that go past my chin?" On the other side, we have Herbert Chua. This fellow with the constant smile is, as one student put it, "just different."

CLASS FLIRTS

Webster's defines flirti ng as "to behave amorously without serious intent." There is no bet ter example of flirtation than can be found in Ricky Trejo and Ju lie Guintivano. Another pair of Marian flirts are Ina Ceja and Andrew Sanchez Aldana. They only flirt with each other which earns them the title of "cutest should-be couple." The question of the year is, will Ina and Andrew ever get together? When will they break the sus ' " pense?

ASB President Mark Bibbo and Yearbook co-editor Christi na Fajardo have contributed to the class of 1993 through aca demics, athletics, and other extra-curricular activities. For Ron Gorsich he will return to Marian and pick up where his father left off, teaching computers and math. Rosy Vasquez will come back to Marian and continue helping people.

WISE TO Ina Ceja had time to hussle up and down the court in varsity basketball. 155 Get Off Our Lawn!!

The Marian Senior Lawn was established when the school was ' built, around 1963. It is located between the Library and the Biology lab (B-21 ). There is a tree planted in memory of George Gabbard, Class of 1982. Just as all senior classes ahead of us, we trashed the lawn in the spring of our junior year. Now it is exclusively ours, dur ing break, lunch and every other moment of the day. Most of the senior students have similar feelings and interpreta tions of the Senior Lawn. Some seniors think that the lawn, "sym bolizes the accomplishments they. have made during the four years they spent here in Marian." Others feel that the lawn shows the "superiority and power of the Seniors over the underclassmen." We think that the Senior Lawn is the symbol of our accomplish ments, goals, dreams, and the beginning of our future.

156 157 Making It Happen The Class ofl993 was led by Ron Gorsich (Treasurer), Gerry Guevara (Secretary), Jose Lepe (President) and Norene Fernandez (Vice President) {from top to bottom) . These individuals put their time into working together to motivate the class all the way to June 11, 1993. In the beginning ofthe year, they hoped to instill a sense ofunity in each individual of the Class of 1993. They strived to help create memories that would last a lifetime. In hopes ofraising money for Senior Funds, the officers planned a trip on December 5, 1992 to CBS Studios to participate as a part of the audience ofFarnily Feud. Not only did it make quite a profit, it was a lot of fun. At the end ofthe year, the officers helped Mrs. Danaher organize the annual trip to GradNite '93 at Disneyland. An all night Disney extravaganza with our closest friends topped off our Senior year. One ofthe memories we will never forget is our Senior Prom. The Seniors worked with the Class of '94 to make the event unforgettable, and that it was. One plan waiting in the wings is a class trip to Mazatlan. At this time, we hope to be on the beach sipping refreshments and basking in the sun. As you have seen, with the help ofthe Class of'93, Jose, Norene, Ron and Gerry have done quite a job. We hope the memories we have created as a class will last a lifetime.

158 Graduation ...

. . . the moment and time we've been waiting for for almost twelve years. The past four years have gone by so fast, it's hard • to believe it's already time to move on. So much has happened. We look back and it was only yesterday that we were Freshmen. We look at ourselves now in disbelief. We are Seniors, almost adults. Most ofus don't even consider ourselves even close to being grown-up. It's an experience being a Senior anticipat ing graduation, yet hoping it didn't go by too fast or pass us by. The whole experience of caps, gowns, and tassels is unreal. While we still have time together, make the most of it because beyond tomorrow is just a memory.
