Schulz to Pay Official Visit to Argentina and Colombia European Parliament President Martin Schulz Schulz to pay official visit to Argentina and Colombia Press Release Foreign Affairs Internal Policies and EU Institutions Brussels 19-08-2016 The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz will pay an official visit to Argentina and Colombia on 22 and 23 August. On Monday, President Schulz will hold meetings with Argentinian President Mauricio Macri, as well as with the leadership of the Argentinian Parliament. President Schulz will also lay a wreath at the Monument of General San Martín and will visit the memorial of the victims of the dictatorship. On Monday afternoon President Schulz will hold a press conference at the Consejo Argentino de Relaciones Internacionales and a speech at the University of Buenos Aires on the challenges the EU faces. President Schulz will also receive a Citizen of Honour award from the City of Buenos Aires. On Tuesday, President Schulz will travel to Bogotá where he will hold a meeting with President Juan Manuel Santos, followed by a press point and an award ceremony. President Schulz will also meet the Speaker of the Colombian House of Representatives Miguel Angel Pinto Hernández and that of the Senate, Mauricio Lizcano Arango. In the afternoon President Schulz will address the Colombian Senate. Ahead of the visit to Argentina, President Schulz stated: “Argentina is taking a new, bold and reformist approach both at home and on the international stage. President Macri and the new administration are reaching out to Argentina’s regional and international partners to revive regionalism and multilateralism. Argentina-EU relations are witnessing a rebirth which must lead to strengthened relations on a host of policies. The European Parliament fully supports this new dynamic and my visit is a testament to it.” Concerning the visit to Bogotá, President Schulz commented: “Colombia is nearing a momentous peace agreement. Colombia today is sending a message of hope which resonates across Latin America and the world. A conflict which seemed endless and which scarred the country deeply is reaching its endpoint. It will take time to heal the wounds and strong international support to restart development in the areas most affected by the conflict.     Reforming the Rules of the Game Fransje Molenaar Fransje oftheGame theRules Reforming DE CLIËNTINBEELD Party law, or the legal regulation of political parties, has be- come a prominent feature of established and newly transi- tioned party systems alike. In many countries, it has become virtually impossible to organize elections without one party or another turning to the courts with complaints of one of its competitors having transgressed a party law. At the same Reforming the Rules of the Game time, it should be recognized that some party laws are de- signed to have a much larger political impact than others. Th e development and reform of party law in Latin America It remains unknown why some countries adopt party laws that have substantial implications for party politics while other countries’ legislative eff orts are of a very limited scope. Th is dissertation explores why diff erent party laws appear as they do. It builds a theoretical framework of party law reform that departs from the Latin American experience with regulating political parties. Latin America is not necessarily known for its strong party systems or party organizations. Th is raises the important ques- tion of why Latin American politicians turn to party law, and to political parties more generally, to structure political life. Using these questions as a heuristic tool, the dissertation advances the argument that party law reforms provide politicians with access to crucial party organizational resources needed to win elections and to legislate eff ectively. Extending this argument, the dissertation identifi es threats to party organizational resources as an important force shaping adopted party law reforms.

    Page 1 of 6 Friday, July 27, 2018 Bigfooting: Argentine dinosaurs Argentina has had its share of giants, from Juan Perón and Evita to Diego Maradona and Messi. But long ago, the South American land was home to truly larger-than-life figures: dinosaurs. In recent decades, paleontologists have made notable findings throughout Argentina, including the recent discovery of fossils linked to the world’s first “giant” dinosaur. The new species, Ingentia prima, was believed to weigh 10 tons. Its discovery was reported earlier this month. Before that, an Argentine farmer in the Patagonian desert encountered spectacular fossils of a Titanosaur (pictured above), one of the largest land animals ever to have roamed the Earth. In 2016, the American Museum of Natural History, in New York City, installed a cast of the 122-foot-long Titanosaur Page 2 of 6 in its popular fossil halls. Dinosaur fossils have been found all over Argentina, but the two most prominent regions for discoveries are La Rioja Province and the Patagonian provinces of Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego, where the sedimentary rocks are well suited to preserve fossils. Reproducing dissent: A house divided Unexpectedly, Argentina’s center-right president, Mauricio Macri, has become a champion of gender issues. During his presidency, the government has proposed legislation to address the gender wage gap, extend maternity leave and increase support for victims of domestic violence. So it was not entirely surprising that Mr. Macri, an abortion opponent, promoted a legislative debate on reproductive rights in a country infamous in the pro-choice movement for its tight restrictions on abortion.

    Weekly Asado August 25, 2017 Argentina Project, Wilson Center Biodiesel: Commerce cries foul On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Commerce accused Argentina (and Indonesia) of unfairly subsidizing biodiesel producers and threatened duties that would raise the price of Argentine biodiesel in the United States by more than 50 percent. A final decision is expected in November. “The U.S. values its relationships with Argentina and Indonesia, but even friendly nations must play by the rules,” Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said. Argentine producers fear the duties would shut them out of the U.S. market. This is no small matter; last year, Argentina exported $1.2 billion in biodiesel to the United States, its primary market (see Commerce data below). The foreign ministry has threatened World Trade Organization action, politely promising to "llevar adelante las acciones legales pertinentes." Good neighbors: Joint World Cup bid Argentina and Uruguay are reportedly submitting a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup, 100 years after Uruguay hosted (and won) the first World Cup in 1930. Hosted by the Government of Argentina, co-organized with IDA and RIADIS. Participants included organizations of persons with disabilities and their Families, Civil Society Organizations, private sector companies and Government Representatives. The goal was to reaffirm the commitment for the full inclusion of people with disabilities in the region and the world. The Argentina Government was represented by the vice-president, Gabriela Michetti and her advisers and the ANDIS (National Agency for Disability). IDA and RIADIS committed a Summit Reference Group to lead the organization of the civil society and to be in contact with the Argentina Government. Inclusion International was a member of the Reference Group through Elena Dal Bó. Elena also had the mission to lead the participation of the Argentina organization of persons with disabilities and their families (OPDF). The Reference Group gathered Latino American and Caribbean leaders with disabilities, Elena as family member and Gabriela Martínez (CONFE). They met every Tuesday evening through Skype and held constant communications by Email and Whatsapp. Argentina group for the Summit was formed by 6 Federations of national and international outreach: FAICA (Blind and low vision ) member of the ULAC and WFB, CAS (Deaf) member of WFD, ASDRA member of FIASDOWN, APADEA, member of Latino American and World federations of persons with autism and their families, Group Art 24 national network for inclusive education, member of RRIE (Regional Network for Inclusive Education of Latino America).
