14814/01 ght/JL/jrb 1 EN THE GOVERNMENT Government decision 11

Council of the European Union General Secretariat 175 rue de la Loi B-1048 BRUSSELS Belgium

Nomination of Swedish members and alternate members to the Committee of the Regions of the European Union

Government decision The Government has decided, in accordance with Article 263 of the EC Treaty and the Council Decision of 2 July 2001, to propose that the term of office of all the members and alternate members of the Swedish delegation to the Committee of the Regions of the European Union be extended until 25 January 2006 as set out in the Annex.

Background The term of office of all members and alternate members of the Committee of the Regions expires on 25 January 2002. All Member States must accordingly nominate new members and alternate members for a new term of office of four years.

In a joint letter, the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and the Swedish Federation of County Councils proposed to the Government that the term of office of the current members and alternate members be extended until 25 January 2006.

Reasons for the Government decision A general election is to be held in Sweden in September 2002 and the results may mean that a new nomination process will be conducted within the parties and that a new Government decision concerning nomination will be forwarded to the Council of the European Union. There is therefore no justification for conducting a new nomination process at the present time.

14814/01 ght/JL/jrb 2 EN The present term of office should instead be extended to cover the whole of the new term of office, i.e. until 25 January 2006.

For the Government
