  • 'Skill Vs. Scale': the Transformation of Traditional Occupations in the Androon Shehr1
CHAPTER 16 ‘Skill vs. Scale’: The Transformation of Traditional Occupations in the Androon Shehr1 ALI KHAN, MANAL M. AHmaD, AND SANA F. MALIK INTRODUCTION eople often view the ‘Old City’ or Androon Shehr2 of Lahore as a ‘repository of memories and the past’, and a receptacle of cultural traditions and values. However, a walk down any of its crowded, winding streets reveals that the ‘historic core’3 of Lahore is not Psituated on any single plane—it is neither wholly ‘traditional’, nor wholly ‘modern’, neither old nor new, poor or rich, conservative or liberal. It is, in fact, heterotopic4—a synchronized product of conflicting elements. Heterotopia, or, in other words, dualism, is a structural characteristic of all Third World cities.5 That a dichotomy exists between an ‘indigenous’ culture and an ‘imposed’ Western culture in every postcolonial society is an established fact. This dichotomy is especially apparent in the economies of Third World cities—what Geertz has described as the ‘continuum’ between the ‘firm’ (formal) and ‘bazaar’ (informal) sectors.6 The Androon Shehr of Lahore is no exception; what makes the Shehr a particularly interesting study is that here the paradoxes of postcolonial society are more visible than anywhere else, as the Shehr, due to certain historic, physical and psychological factors, has managed to retain a ‘native’, pre-colonial identity that areas outside the ‘walls’ altogether lack, or have almost entirely lost, with the passage of time. This supposed ‘immunity’ of the Androon Shehr to the ‘disruption of the larger economic system’7 does not mean that the Shehr is a static, unchanging society—it simply means that the society has chosen to ‘modernize’8 on its own terms.

61 In this book, the author has given the Hfe sketch of the distinguish personahties, who supported the AUgarh Movement and made efforts for the betterment of the MusHm Community. The author highlighting the importance of the Aligarh Muslim University said that "it is the most prestigious intellectual and cultural centre of Indian Muslims". He also explained in this book that Hindus easily adopted the western education. As for Hindus, the advent of the Britishers and their emergence as the rulers were just a matter of change from one master to another. For them, the Britishers and Muslims were both conquerors. But for the Muslims it was a matter of becoming ruled instead of the ruler. Naqvi, Noorul Hasan (2001) wrote a book in Urdu entitled "Mohammadan College Se Muslim University Tak (From Mohammadan College to Muslim University)".^^ In this book he wrote in brief about the life and works of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, He gave a brief description about the supporters of Sir Syed and Aligarh Movement such as Mohsin-ul-Mulk, Viqar-ul-Mulk, Altaf Husain Hali, Maulana Shibli Nomani, Moulvi Samiullah Khan, Jutice Mahmud, Raja Jai Kishan Das and Maulvi ZakauUah Khan, etc. The author also wrote about the Aligarh Movement, the Freedom Movement and the educational planning of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. A historical development of AMU has also been made. The author has also given in brief about the life of some of the important benefactors of the university such as His Highness Sir Agha Khan, Her Majestry Nawab Sultan Jahan Begum, His Holiness Maharaja Mohammad Ali Khan of .

  • Rethinking Majlis' Politics: Pre-1948 Muslim Concerns in Hyderabad State
Rethinking Majlis’ politics: Pre-1948 Muslim concerns in Hyderabad State M. A. Moid and A. Suneetha Anveshi Research Centre for Women’s Studies, Hyderabad In the historiography of Hyderabad State, pre-1948 Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (Majlis) figures as a separatist, communal and fanatical political formation. For the nationalist, Hindu and left politics in this region, Majlis has long stood for the ‘other’, wherein concerns articu- lated by it get discredited. In this article, we argue that there is a need to rethink the Majlis’ political perspective and its articulation of Muslim concerns by placing them in the context of the momentous political developments in the first half of the twentieth century. Caught between the imminent decline of the Asaf Jahi kingdom and the arrival of democratic politics, the Majlis saw the necessity of popular will but also the dangers of majoritarianism during such transitions and fought against the threat of imminent minoritisation of Muslims in the Hyderabad State. This article draws on the Urdu writings on the Majlis and Bahadur Yar Jung’s speeches that have been rarely used in Telugu or English writings on this period. Keywords: Muslim politics in Hyderabad State, Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, Deccani nationalism, Bahadur Yar Jung, democratic politics in Hyderabad State Introduction Writing the history or discussing the politics of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (Majlis, hereafter) of the 1940s is beset with problems of perspective that arise out of that very history. Between 1930 and 1948, Hyderabad State underwent complex and rapid changes: a shift in the communal profile of the state, which led to the polarisation of Hindus and Muslims; the transformation of local struggles for civil liberties and political reforms into a nationalist struggle, backed by the Indian army in the border districts from 1947; the peasant revolt against the feudal hierarchy in rural Telangana and its armed struggle against the Nizam’s government; and most Acknowledgements: We would like to thank Gita Ramaswamy, Shefali Jha, R.
