Art.-Nr. WHISKY MENU SCOTLAND’S DISTILLERY REGIONS Highland INVERNESS Speyside ABERDEEN ISLANDS Islay GLASGOW EDINBURGH Campeltown Lowland SPEYSIDE INVERNESS Speyside ABERDEEN GLASGOW EDINBURGH The region gets its name from the River Spey which carves its way through the area, supplying the distilleries with what becomes ‘uisge-beatha’. This is the heartland of whisky and is a popular destination for whisky enthusiasts from all around the world. Many come to devote themselves to the Holy Mother of Malts! Home to over half of the distilleries around Scotland, it is a treat to discover an array of aromas and flavours that will leave you wanting more. Famous for light, fruity characteristics, each distillery has its own unique quirks, creating a very long bucket list of distilleries to sample. SPEYSIDE ABERLOUR DISTILLERY Aberlour translates to Obar Lobhair in Gaelic meaning ‘the mouth of the talkative or noisy stream’, and was founded by James Fleming in 1879, whose family motto is, ‘Let the deed show”. The distillery is supplied by the Rivers Lour and Spey, which is a short distance from Ben Rinnes and is in the heart of Speyside. As a little curiosity, the distillery pours a bottle of Aberlour 12-year-old into the River Spey every year, to mark the start of the salmon fishing season in February. This little ritual is to ‘bless’ the water in hope of a good fishing season for locals.

The GlenDronach – the ‘Allardice’ Scotch Whisky By David Allardice, Melbourne, Australia August 2009 Email: [email protected] .au GlenDronach is a single malt scotch whisky, produced by The GlenDronach Distillery Co Ltd at its distillery in Aberdeenshire. This whisky is of particular interest to Allardices around the world because of the family connection. The Distillery was founded by James Allardes in 1826, although he is referred to on the bottle labels and company literature as James Allardice and the 18 year old GlenDronach whisky is named the ‘Allardice’. To avoid confusion, we will mostly refer to the more modern spelling in this article. HISTORY OF THE DISTILLERY Established in 1826 and located at Forgue, Aberdeenshire, approximately 5 miles north-east of Huntly, GlenDronach is classified as a Highland malt. The Distillery is located in an area noted for the number and quality of illicit stills which operated prior to the 1823 Excise Act. GlenDronach was one of the first distilleries licensed under the Act. The GlenDronach Distillery was founded by James Allardice with a group of astute local farmers and businessmen. The Duke of Gordon (from nearby Huntly) liked the whisky so much that he took James with him to London, to present him to the London gentry. But the success went to Allardice’s head. He neglected his Distillery and in 1837 it was destroyed by a fire. When James was declared bankrupt in 1842, the Distillery was taken over by the remaining owners and operated by one of them, Walter Scott, who worked at the Teaninich Distillery.

Although the exact origins of the brown stuff can be debated for an eternity, one thing we can all agree on is that it’s delicious! With the practice of distilling water being traced way back to ancient China, the process soon found its way to the Middle East for the production of perfume. It was the catholic monks we can thank for bringing it back to Europe where any beer that was not drank in time and about to go off was distilled in order to avoid wastage. This clear spirit was enjoyed straight off the still and was a much stronger and livelier drop compared to what will be in your glass this fine evening! It was the mighty cask that soon came about to tame this fiery spirit. For a minimum time of 3 years (usually much longer) the spirit mingles with the cask until it can be officially christened whisk(e)y. 3 INTRODUCTION With whisk(e)y today being more popular than it has ever been, there is no better time to enjoy it. Gone are the days where the older it is the better; we are now wise to the fact that there are numerous qualities that equate to what makes a good nip of whiskey. Where was it made? What was it made with? How strong is it? What cask was it matured in? Do I need ice with this one? Am I having a good/bad day?..
