Why Jews Left Arab Lands: Another Look THE FORGOTTEN REFUGEES: the causes of the post-1948 Jewish Exodus from Arab Countries by Philip Mendes, published in the Australian Journal of Jewish Studies, Volume 16, 2002, pp.120-134. This paper explores the question of the other Middle Eastern refugees – the Jews who fled or were expelled from Arab countries between 1948 and the mid 1950s. Specific attention is drawn to the experience of Iraq. Using relevant literature, the author analyses the two principal and polarised versions of the exodus: the Zionist position which attributes the Jewish exodus almost solely to Arab violence or threats of violence; and the Arab or anti-Zionist position which assigns responsibility to a malicious Zionist conspiracy. This paper suggests a middle-ground or less polarised version which acknowledges the role of both anti-Jewish hostility, and the attraction of Zionism and the newly-created State of Israel. Some comparison is also made between the Jewish exodus, and the slightly earlier Palestinian exodus. Whilst acknowledging certain similarities, the author rejects as overly simplistic the specific equation of the two exoduses, or the notion that they constituted a legitimate exchange of populations. — Philip Mendes [Dr. Mendes is on the faculty of Monash University, located near Melbourne, Australia] The Case of Iraq The Jewish departure from Iraq arguably provides the best case example of the Jewish exodus from the Arab world. The Jews of Iraq constituted one of the oldest communities of the Jewish Diaspora, dating back over 2500 years to the time of the Babylonian exile. They were well integrated into Iraqi society, and generally prosperous. -

On the 5th February, 1840, Father Tommaso, an Italian friar of the Capuchin Order who had been resident formany years inDamascus, disappeared. His servant was never seen to also again. It had been Tommaso's practice vaccinate children? especially Jewish and Christian?and he was consequently on friendly terms with many Jewish families inDamascus. The friar and his servant were said to have been last seen in the Jewish quarter at about 11 a.m. affixing placards, announcing a forthcoming sale of goods. A few days earlier, Tommaso and his servant had been involved in a quarrel with some Moslem Arabs, and one of them, a muleteer, had been heard to swear that Tommaso would die at his hands. As soon as the disappearance became known, another of this group of Arabs, a merchant, committed suicide. The Latins or Roman Catholics of the Ottoman Empire were at that time under the protection of France and it fell in ordinary course to the Consul of that power in Damascus, the Count de Ratti Menton, to investigate the disappearance. It is a modern phenomenon which has to do a lot with the import of European ideologies into the Arab world and the political, social and economic changes within the arab societies in the last two centuries, but it doesn´t have the centuries old background, that antisemitisim has in the christian societies of Europe. Even though Islamic integralism, also a modern phenomenon, already had a strong anti-Jewish attitude in the thirties and fourties of the 20th century, it was Sayyed Qutb who linked islamic integralism and modern antisemitism in a systematic way in the sixties of the 20th century, and who systematically mixed the stories of the „protocols of the elders of Zion“ with a specific interpretation of Islam. Historically the tolerance of islamic states towards other religions of the book, ahl al-kitab – mainly christians and jews – was much stronger than in the christian societies of europe before the Enlightment. Contrary to western Christianity, Islam tolerated these ahl al-kitab – and only those – as Dhimmis, as charges of Islam. Jews, Christians, Mandeans or Zarostrans in Iran, who were tolerated as Dhimmis, were not members of the Umma, the islamic community, but they were members of the state with reduced rights. -

Zeitschrift für Religionspaedagogik 18 (2019), H.1, 6–17 The Religious Memory of Antisemitism – The Pittsburgh Shooter between Christian White Supremacist and Islamicist Agitation by Armin Lange Abstract Based on the example of the Pittsburgh shooting at October 27th 2018, this article argues that antisemitism is based on a set of religious symbols which began to evolve in antiquity and which incite people to violent acts of hatred against Jews. The religious symbols of antisemitism are anchored in the religious and cultural memories of the Western und Muslim worlds. Eradication of antisemitism will only be possible, if these religious symbols of Antisemitism are neutralized in both heritages. Exporting Zionism: Architectural Modernism in Israeli-African Technical Cooperation, 1958-1973 Ayala Levin Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Ayala Levin All rights reserved ABSTRACT Exporting Zionism: Architectural Modernism in Israeli-African Technical Cooperation, 1958-1973 Ayala Levin This dissertation explores Israeli architectural and construction aid in the 1960s – “the African decade” – when the majority of sub-Saharan African states gained independence from colonial rule. In the Cold War competition over development, Israel distinguished its aid by alleging a postcolonial status, similar geography, and a shared history of racial oppression to alleviate fears of neocolonial infiltration. I critically examine how Israel presented itself as a model for rapid development more applicable to African states than the West, and how the architects negotiated their professional practice in relation to the Israeli Foreign Ministry agendas, the African commissioners' expectations, and the international disciplinary discourse on modern architecture. I argue that while architectural modernism was promoted in the West as the International Style, Israeli architects translated it to the African context by imbuing it with nation-building qualities such as national cohesion, labor mobilization, skill acquisition and population dispersal. GE.10-12320 A/HRC/13/NGO/138 Palestine Partition Plans (1922 & 1947): Right to the Truth on Refugees 1. On 29 November 1947, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 181 [II], the second ‘Partition Plan’ of the Mandatory area of Palestine. The aim was to divide the land west of the river Jordan into “independent Arab and Jewish States” within the remaining area – roughly 23 percent of the designated League of Nations Palestine area of 120,000 km², with Jerusalem as a corpus separatum administered directly by the United Nations. 2. In 1922, all the League of Nations designated area east of the Jordan river (about 77 percent, 94,000 km² of Palestine) was offered to Britain’s World War I ally, the Emir Abdullah (exiled by the Saudis from Arabia), thus creating a de facto Hashemite Emirate of Trans-Jordan, which declared its independence in 1946. -
