    Subterranean Bourgeois Blues: The Second English Folk Revival, c. 1945-1970 Julia Yvonne Mitchell UCL This thesis is submitted for the degree of PhD. 2 I, Julia Yvonne Mitchell, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract This thesis explores the folk revival phenomenon in England, through an original examination of its place in the social and political history of the country after the Second World War. Although its roots stretched back to the early twentieth century, the post- war English folk revival significantly occurred in the context of the nation’s de- industrialisation, and exposed tensions between, on the one hand, a nostalgic lament for a fast-disappearing working class life, and a ‘forward-looking’ socialist vision of working-class culture. The original contribution to knowledge of this project lies in its analytic approach to the English folk revival as an important part of the post-war political culture. It looks at the revival from the outside in, and contextualizes the movement in the social and political story of post-war England, while also placing it within a dynamic transnational framework, a complex cross-Atlantic cultural exchange with its more well-known American contemporary. In so doing, this thesis contributes to the existing historiographies of folk revivalism in England, as well as the social and political historiographical discourses of the postwar period: the continued salience of class in English society; the transformation of the nation’s economic infrastructures; the social and political influence of the Welfare State – the folk revival tapped into all of these overlapping strands, and helped to magnify them.

    Asset Name: London Road Station Asset Address: Shaftesbury Place, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4QS Asset Type (e.g. Pub/House/Public Park): Railway station (with public right of across it) Date of Construction: 1877 Short Description of Asset (e.g. materials, style, features of interest): London Road Station is our city's best example of Italianate style favoured by the railway architects of the mid-Victorian era. The station itself is distinguished as you enter from the south by its flight of steps leading from the pavement to the booking hall flanked on each side by attractive balconies. As you emerge from booking hall to platform 1, there is a definite rural-feel since the two platforms of London Road Station are staggered. Among the city's railway stations already listed, are Brighton (Grade II listed on 30 April 1973), Hove and Portslade. However, the platforms of these stations run in parallel so they do not offer the amenity of attractive railway corridor open space i.e. rich wildlife habitat right opposite platform 1. 1 How does the nominated asset meet the criteria for Architectural, Design and Artistic interest? The siting of London Road Station and its rural setting make it our city's most attractive example of Italianate style favoured by the railway architects of the mid-Victorian era. Other local stations (Hove, Kemp Town and Portslade) shared what was in the 1870s a standard design. The other surviving railway stations, Hove and Portslade, which have more industrial settings, are already listed. London Road Station blends well with the adjoining neighbourhoods.

    Janet Russell Singer, performer, vocal workshop leader, song arranger Janet first made a name for herself on the folk circuit in the ‘80’s as a young singer songwriter writing with hard-edged humour about issues affecting women. Her “Secretary’s Song” was the most requested song on “Folk on 2” in 1987/8, and “Breastfeeding Baby in the Park” has been taken up by the pro-breastfeeding lobby nationally and internationally. Her work on Scottish traditional material with Scottish singer Christine Kydd has received huge critical acclaim, particularly in her native Scotland, and in the US. Janet has now worked on the folk scene professionally for more than 30 years, starting in Edinburgh pubs, in 1980/81, and has experience of folk clubs, arts centres, concert halls, church halls and village halls of all sorts and sizes in the UK, Europe, and the USA. Throughout this time Janet has worked with other musicians, such as Sisters Unlimited colleagues Sandra Kerr, Rosie Davis and Peta Webb, and Scottish singing partner Christine Kydd, and also toured the show “Take These Chains from My Heart”, written by partner Jim Woodland with storyteller Taffy Thomas, about the experience of recovering from a stroke. Janet worked as musical director for Mikron Theatre for ten years, and is recognised as an accomplished vocal harmony workshop leader. She is a member of the Natural Voice Practitioners’ Network. This updated archive celebrates our 30 years of our existence as an epicentre of Folk and Acoustic music. None of us remember much of the very early days, but gradually more bits and pieces have come to light. When we originally put together this archive for our 20th birthday we were a bit stuck! Like the Dead Sea Scrolls, the ancient papyrus of the early gospels and pronouncements of who did what when got lost somewhere along the way. Typewriters of the day did not have memories, less so the scribes. And then - that flash of inspiration! We remembered that we have always advertised in Folk London. Sheila Finn, the editor at the time, very kindly went through all the back issues to tell us who our guests had been, and we are eternally grateful for her efforts. Updating the last ten years has been easy, thanks to computers and our webmaster and IT expert Neil Poole. Now it’s all safely stored for future folkeologists to marvel at, and beamed to all corners of the earth and beyond. We have moved with the times too, and we now spread our missives via FaceBook, Twitter and our YouTube channel.
