And at the end the acknowledgements, the last step to complete the thesis. Because I want to emphasize that I could complete it with the help of a lot of people and I want thank everyone. Per tots dos m’he sentit recolzada, animada, i valorada: heu aconseguit fer-me sentir una privilegiada! I will start with my thesis “promotoren”: Iosune and René. Thanks for the mutual understanding. This takes time and you have needed a good dosis of comprehension, patience and to have an open mind! Both of you supported, encouraged, and valuated me: you made me feel privileged! I have learned a lot from both of you, a good combination of biology and biotechnology! Iosune, because of you I wanted to start this thesis, and look! Thanks to make the process so easy and funny, you have showed me the importance of so many details in the science world and furthermore you have infected with me the excitement of discovery. René, I specially thank you that I could finish this thesis, I ó thanks for your generosity, to receive me in Holland, to believe in me and to make it possible that I could continue in this subject. Close to you, the work can be an adventure as well as a party. You taught me not to surrender. Obviously, the “Dutch people” have a very important place in my acknowledgements, because I owe them a lot. I want to thank Detmer, because when I arrived in Holland a little bit disoriented and he was a great host. Thanks for all your help inside and outside the laboratory, specially driving around your nice country. I also want to thank Marieke, always there to help me with whatever I needed, to be my logistic support in the Netherlands by receiving me in her house, and always ready to spend some good time drinking some “biers”. Dank je wel to both of you for your warm hospitality! I also want to express my gratitude to everybody of the Bioprocess Engineering group. All of you have facilitated my stay, specially trying to understand my awful English! Thanks Ronald to have time for me between project and project. Jan-Willem to share office and dinners with you was cool. Thanks to Henri, who was better a colleague than a student, to Fred, for your indispensable assistance with the tanks, to Rouke for making me laugh so much “Tjongejongejonge”, and also to Martin and Joyce for patiently answering my e- IIIó mails from Spain. My larvae were happy in the tanks of Michiel at RIVO; from them and me, thanks you! At the end of this long process, it has been a pleasure to meet Dominick (thanks for so many good ideas) and Marzia. In fact, I would like to give my gratitude to everyone who believed that this thesis deserved their effort. Thank you a lot!!! • General Introduction and Objectives 3
General introduction and objectives 3 General introduction: General body organization: The phylum Porifera is commonly referred to as sponges. The phylum, that comprises more than 6,000 species, is divided into three classes: Calcarea, Hexactinellida and Demospongiae. The latter class contains more than 85% of the living species. They are predominantly marine, with the notable exception of the family Spongillidae, an extant group of freshwater demosponges whose fossil record begins in the Cretaceous. Sponges are ubiquitous benthic creatures, found at all latitudes beneath the world's oceans, and from the intertidal to the deep-sea. Sponges are considered as the most basal phylum of metazoans, since most of their features appear to be primitive, and it is widely accepted that multicellular animals consist of a monophyletic group (Zrzavy et al. 1998). Poriferans appear to be diploblastic (Leys 2004; Maldonado 2004), although the two cellular sheets are difficult to homologise with those of the rest of metazoans. They are sessile animals, though it has been shown that some are able to move slowly (up to 4 mm per day) within aquaria (e.g., Bond and Harris 1988; Maldonado and Uriz 1999). They lack organs, possessing cells that develop great number of functions. The sponge body is lined by a pseudoepithelial layer of flat cells (exopinacocytes). Anatomically and physiologically, tissues of most sponges (but carnivorous sponges) are organized around an aquiferous system of excurrent and incurrent canals (Rupert and Barnes 1995). These canals are lined by a pseudoepithelial layer of flat cells (endopinacocytes).Water flows into the sponge body through multiple apertures (ostia) General introduction and objectives 4 to the incurrent canals which end in the choanocyte chambers (Fig.

Demospongiae from northern Bass Strait, southern Australia. Memoirs of the Museum of Victoria 50(1): 1-242. Eighty-four species (in 47 genera) in the Museum of Victoria, Melbourne, are described and illustrated. Of these, 21 species are described as new: Ancorina repens, A. suina, Stelletta arenitecta, Rhabdastrella cordata, R. intermedia, Tetilla praecipua, Latrunculia hallmanni, Pseudaxinella decipiens, Reniochalina sectilis, Rhaphoxya felina, Clathria wilsoni, Echinoclathria egena, Psammoclema bitextum, P. fissuratum, P. goniodes, P. radiatum, P. stipitatum, P. van- soesti, Callyspongia persculpta, C. toxifera, and Thorecta glomerosus. Eighteen records are new for the Maugean province, and three (Phorbas tenacior, Darwinella gardineri, and Gel- liodes incrustans) are new for the Australian fauna. The following revisions depart from those adopted in Wiedenmayer et al. (in press). The family Desmacididae is divided into Desmacidi- nae and Stylotellinae, and the genera Stylotella ( = Batzella), Phoriospongia ( = Chondropsis), and Psammoclema ( = Psammopemma, Sarcocornea) are assigned to the latter. Dactylia, Chalinopsilla and Arenosclera are synonymised with Callyspongia. Thorectandra is synonymised with Thorecta. Dendrilla cactos (Selenka) is a senior synonym of D. rosea Lendenfeld. The composition of this collection is even, with respect to the known demosponge fauna of Victoria and Tasmania. Its zoogeographic affinity is essentially Indo-West Pacific and relictic Tethyan, its provincial endemism high, and its overlap with the Antarctic/Subantarctic fauna almost nil.

Zoological Studies 55: 2 (2016) doi:10.6620/ZS.2016.55-02 A New Species of Genus Plakortis Schulze 1880 (Porifera: Homoscleromorpha) from Badabalu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India Vibha V. Ubare* and PM Mohan Department of Ocean Studies and Marine Biology, Pondicherry University, Brookshabad, Port Blair – 744 112, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India (Received November 19, 2014; Accepted September 29, 2015) Vibha V. Ubare and PM. Mohan (2016) Recently revealed Class: Homoscleromorpha play a significant role in sponge systematics. The smaller size, cryptic habits and unresolved species complex are greater obstacles for the taxonomic identification of this class. Out of < 100 species, only 6 species have been described from the Indian region. Till date, only one species of the genus Plakortis, that is, P. simplex has been described from this region. The present study provides a detailed description of new species of the genus Plakortis, Schulze 1880. P. badabaluensis sp. nov. is characterized by the two size classes of diods (one is thick and the other is thin), triods and smooth microrhabds; with well differentiated ectosome, presence of subectosomal lacunae and confused choanosome. The identification of this new species has increased the number of plakinid species from one to two in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. Further detailed studies are required to explore this type of cryptic species in this region. Key words: Homoscleromorpha, Plakortis, Taxonomy, Badabalu, Pongibalu, Andaman Islands. BACKGROUND larva (Van Soest et al. 2012, 2014). The homoscleromorpha is the only sponge lineage Marine sponges are very important and in which cell layers are very similar to those of dominant in the benthic communities of oceans.

Accepted: June 22, 2015 Data deposition: Raw genomic sequencing data for Corticium candelabrum have been deposited at the NCBI Sequence Read Archive under the accession SRR2021567. The Corticium candelabrum genome assembly and phylogenetic profiling sequence alignments have been placed on FigShare, doi: 10.6084/m9.figshare.1412684. Mitochondrial DNA sequences from Crella elegans and Petrosia ficiformis have been deposited at GenBank under the accessions KR911862 and KR911863, respectively. Abstract The evolution of mitochondrial information processing pathways, including replication, transcription and translation, is characterized by the gradual replacement of mitochondrial-encoded proteins with nuclear-encoded counterparts of diverse evolutionary origins. Although the ancestral enzymes involved in mitochondrial transcription and replication have been replaced early in eukaryotic evolution, mitochondrial translation is still carried out by an apparatus largely inherited from the a-proteobacterial ancestor. However, variation in the complement of mitochondrial-encoded molecules involved in translation, including transfer RNAs (tRNAs), provides evidence for the ongoing evolution of mitochondrial protein synthesis. Here, we investigate the evolution of the mitochondrial translational machinery using recent genomic and transcriptomic data from animals that have experienced the loss of mt-tRNAs, including phyla Cnidaria and Ctenophora, as well as some representatives of all four classes of Porifera. We focus on four sets of mitochondrial enzymes that directly interact with tRNAs: Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases, glutamyl-tRNA amidotransferase, tRNAIle lysidine synthetase, and RNase P.
