Xenosaurus Tzacualtipantecus. the Zacualtipán Knob-Scaled Lizard Is Endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of Eastern Mexico
Xenosaurus tzacualtipantecus. The Zacualtipán knob-scaled lizard is endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of eastern Mexico. This medium-large lizard (female holotype measures 188 mm in total length) is known only from the vicinity of the type locality in eastern Hidalgo, at an elevation of 1,900 m in pine-oak forest, and a nearby locality at 2,000 m in northern Veracruz (Woolrich- Piña and Smith 2012). Xenosaurus tzacualtipantecus is thought to belong to the northern clade of the genus, which also contains X. newmanorum and X. platyceps (Bhullar 2011). As with its congeners, X. tzacualtipantecus is an inhabitant of crevices in limestone rocks. This species consumes beetles and lepidopteran larvae and gives birth to living young. The habitat of this lizard in the vicinity of the type locality is being deforested, and people in nearby towns have created an open garbage dump in this area. We determined its EVS as 17, in the middle of the high vulnerability category (see text for explanation), and its status by the IUCN and SEMAR- NAT presently are undetermined. This newly described endemic species is one of nine known species in the monogeneric family Xenosauridae, which is endemic to northern Mesoamerica (Mexico from Tamaulipas to Chiapas and into the montane portions of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala). Aquiloeurycea Scandens (Walker, 1955). the Tamaulipan False Brook Salamander Is Endemic to Mexico
Aquiloeurycea scandens (Walker, 1955). The Tamaulipan False Brook Salamander is endemic to Mexico. Originally described from caves in the Reserva de la Biósfera El Cielo in southwestern Tamaulipas, this species later was reported from a locality in San Luis Potosí (Johnson et al., 1978) and another in Coahuila (Lemos-Espinal and Smith, 2007). Frost (2015) noted, however, that specimens from areas remote from the type locality might be unnamed species. This individual was found in an ecotone of cloud forest and pine-oak forest near Ejido La Gloria, in the municipality of Gómez Farías. Wilson et al. (2013b) determined its EVS as 17, placing it in the middle portion of the high vulnerability category. Its conservation status has been assessed as Vulnerable by IUCN, and as a species of special protection by SEMARNAT. Our histological observations indicate that adult males exhibit spermato- genesis and spermiogenesis throughout the year; no seasonal differences were found in testes mass, height of epididymal epithelial cells, and number of layers of spermatogonia, primary and secondary spermatocytes, and spermatids. Seminiferous tubules exhibited slight, but statistically signi®cant, seasonal variation in diameter. Continuous spermatogenesis and spermiogenesis of S. bicanthalis differ from the cyclical pattern exhibited by most species of lizards and from lizard species sympatric with S. bicanthalis. Continuous reproductive activity of males of S. bicanthalis, and maturation at a relatively small size, is associated with a female reproductive activity in which vitellogenic or pregnant females are present in the population during all months of the year. As a consequence, males can encounter potential mates as soon as they mature. -

Vermilion Flycatcher, Verdin, and a stunning male Broad-billed Hummingbird were some of the first birds tallied on Camp Chiricahua 2019 Session 2. This was more than thirty years after Willy and I had similar experiences at Camp Chiricahua as teenagers—our enthusiasm for birds and the natural world still vigorous and growing all these years later, as I hope yours will. The summer monsoon, which brings revitalizing rains to the deserts, mountains, and canyons of southeast Arizona, was tardy this year, but we would see it come to life later in our trip. Rufous-winged Sparrow at Arizona Sonora Desert Museum © Brian Gibbons On our first evening we were lucky that a shower passed and cooled down the city from a baking 104 to a tolerable 90 degrees for our outing to Sweetwater Wetlands, a reclaimed wastewater treatment area where birds abound. We found twittering Tropical Kingbirds and a few Abert’s Towhees in the bushes surrounding the ponds. Mexican Duck, Common Gallinule, and American Coot were some of the birds that we could find on the duckweed-choked ponds. -

The same day also featured Thicket Antpitta and THREE species of owl during the daytime… Ferruginous Pygmy, Crested and Spectacled Owls. 1 www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] Page Tropical Birding Trip Report COSTA RICA: The Introtour (Group 1) Feb 2017 INTRODUCTION There can be few countries in the World as welcoming to birders as Costa Rica; everywhere we went birds were plentiful and frequently people with binoculars were in attendance too. Indeed, Costa Rica makes you feel odd if you are NOT wearing a pair. We enjoyed a fantastic tour of some of the most revered sites in Costa Rican birding; we started out near San Jose in the dry Central Valley, before driving over to the Caribbean side, where foothill birding was done in and around Braulio Carrillo National Park, and held beautiful birds from the outset, like Black-and-yellow Tanager, Black-thighed Grosbeak, and daytime Spectacled and Crested Owls. A tour first was also provided by a Thicket Antpitta seen well by all. From there we continued downslope to the lowlands of that side, and the world famous La Selva Biological Station. La Selva is a place where birds feel particularly plentiful, and we racked up a heady list of birds on our one and a half days there, including Rufous and Broad-billed Motmots, Black-throated Trogon, Pale-billed, Cinnamon and Chestnut-colored Woodpeckers, Keel-billed and Yellow-throated Toucans, and Great Curassow, to name just a few of the highlights, which also included several two-toed sloths, the iconic Red-eyed Tree Frog (photo last page), and Strawberry Poison Dart Frogs of the much publicized “blue jeans” form that adorns so many tourist posters in this Sarapiqui region.
