During my research and through- out my experience of living in the Netherlands and France, I was always fascinated by their creativity to encompass and embrace various worlds into their being. To my understanding, by their mere existence, they continued to challenge all the boundar- ies that are invented and enforced upon us. I realized my interest in them did not stem from an identification issue as they were the natives and I was the migrant. I could only try to put myself in the shoes of their parents, who left their lives and families behind in Turkey with the hope that they will go back someday, a longing I myself now often endure. However, the second generation represented the future and their inspiring experience rendered questions of stay or return redundant. Hence I want to begin by expressing my gratitude to my respondents for inspiring me, opening their hearts and lives to me. I have learned so much from them, and I hope I have managed to do justice to their generosity. I would like to thank my PhD promoters Prof. Maurice Crul, Prof. Manuela du Bois, and Prof. Jan Rath for their supervision and encouragement during my PhD research. The Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies at the University of Amsterdam provided an academically stimulating but also a congenial working environment for me as a PhD. This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract The trade in caviar has a rich and colorful history, influenced over thousands of years by many cultures, societies and in the last decades by regulation. The value of caviar is historically discovered in the context of social change, political relationships and environ- mental change. The role of organized crime is described, as the scarcity of caviar has offered the unique opportunity to fish illegally, smuggle and trade contraband to mainly European countries with millions in profits. This study highlights that these criminal networks manifest themselves at all levels of the trade: from the poaching areas where organized criminal groups cooperate with law enforcers and possess top-notch equipment to major smuggling operations in the hands of sophisticated criminal networks. Although due to overexploitation ‘wild caviar’ is increasingly difficult to obtain, the demand in the context of exclusivity and scarcity remains intact by the upper class society desire for edible gold. REMAINING ANONYMOUS Using Participatory Arts-Based Methods with Migrant Women Workers in the Age of the Smartphone OBJECTIVES Background: Voices of Women Media Communities of Turkish, Moroccan, Surinamese, Indonesian, and Chinese immigrants who are considered, officially, allochtoon—born in another country or having a parent from another country—have long settled in the Netherlands. Pooja Pant, a Nepalese media activist, and I were curious about their experience of becoming Dutch since we had both just arrived to live and work in Amsterdam so we co-founded Voices of Women (VOW) Media in 2007 and we partnered with various community-based organizations working in the area of migrant women’s rights1 to run participatory media workshops. In 2012, we decided to expand this work to East Asia and South Asia out of a personal desire to establish connections to the countries of our parents. Through these partnerships and over the following nine years we worked closely with women sex workers who see themselves as being invisible in society as a whole but visible to the public. In their lacking opportunity and access to resources, they are often discussed by those in power who make decisions, such as politicians, the media, or policy makers, but are not included in the discussion. To use the words of Srilatha Batliwala, in this work VOW Media explores women’s empowerment as part of “both a process and the result of that process” (1994, p. 130). In a collaborative and non-hierarchical setting we engage with communities of migrant women using participatory arts-based methodologies, including cellphilms, in order to create audiovisual media works that highlight their life stories.

In the Netherlands the PVV is known as one of the major radical right parties as it portrays many characteristics of radical right parties: nationalistic, against involvement from the European Union and anti-migration (Vossen, 2011). In this research different explanations are explored for differences in electoral support for a radical right party in the Netherlands i.e. the PVV. The discrepancies between voters are based on individual and geographical differences. In this thesis the different motives for voting the PVV are studied as well as connecting them to individual and geographical aspects of the electoral support of the PVV.     UnitedNetherlands States of America No. 411 NovemberJuly 2007 Netherlands The Netherlands has a long history of immigration. Both refugees and economic migrants have come to the country in large numbers. Currently almost 20% of the Dutch population are immigrants or children of immigrant parents. For a long time the Dutch took pride in the fact that many people came to their country because of its relative tolerance towards other cultures and religions. Immigrants who came after the Second World War, as guest workers or from former colonies, were initially encouraged to maintain their own cul- tures, even after it became clear they would stay in the Neth- erlands permanently. Access to citizenship was easy, and the pressure to assimilate was low. For immigrants who were not proficient in Dutch, many government services and documents were provided in their mother tongues. However it soon became clear that the former guest work- ers and, to a lesser extent, migrants from the former colonies were economically marginalised. Many policies were enacted to improve their position, but to little avail. With the new century came a very turbulent time for Dutch multiculturalism, which had attempted to accommodate immigrants as culturally dis- Background Information tinct groups. The advisory report has been compiled by the Committee on Population Screening and reviewed by the Standing Committee on Medicine, the Standing Committee on Public Health and a number of external experts. There is continuing controversy about the effectiveness and efficacy of breast cancer screening. Some believe that the efficacy is not as great as had been anticipated, or even marginal, while the harmsare considerable. Others argue that breast cancer screening is in fact very effective and could be more effective still if the programme were intensified. I therefore conclude that the in-depth, methodological analysis that the Committee performed was very important. Having done so, the Committee has concluded that the Netherlands has a long-term and effective population based screening programme for breast cancer, which – despite changing circumstances – continues to satisfy expectations. According to the Committee, in part the success of the Dutch population screening programme is due to the high quality and organizational efficiency of the programme. For example, in the Netherlands, false positives and overdiagnosis are less common that in some other countries, while the number of false negatives is barely any higher.
