James McKinney is Dean of the School of Church Music, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas, and in addition is Professor of Voice. Previously he was Chairman of the Music Theory Department. He joined the faculty at Southwestern in 1950 after a year's teaching in 1956. In 1958 he served as guest teacher at the University of Southern California, and driring the 1971-72 school year was a visiting lecturer at Hong Kong Baptist College and at Hong Kong 9aptist Seminary.

Dean McKinney received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from Louisiana State University, and was awarded the Doctor of Musical Arts degree by the University of Southern California. He also has studied at Louisiana Tech University, Stanford University, and �estminster Choir College. He studied voice with William Vennard and Ilda Schriefer, theory and composition with Helen Gunderson and Halsey Stevens, church music and conducting with Charles Hirt, and musicology with Pauline Alderman, Gustav Reese, and J. A. Westrup. His dissertation topic was The Solo Bass Voice in the Cantatas of J. S. Bach. In 1969, he was given an Honors Aw-ard by the University of Southern California in "Recognition of Professional Service , Leadership, and Performance."

A native of Minden, Louisiana, he is a nephew of the late B. B. McKinney, beloved Baptist hymn writer and gospel singer. He is married to the former Elizabeth Ric hmond of Oakdale, Louisiana, who is in her own right an accomplished musician. The McKinneys have three sons--James, Jr ., Timothy, and Kevin.

Dr. McKinney is a member of Phi Mu Alpha S infonia (honorary music), Pi Kappa Lambda ( n a tional honor society), Omicron Delta Kappa (national leadership), and Phi Kappa Phi (national scholastic) fraternities. He also is a member of the following professional organizations: National Association of Teachers of , Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators N a t ional Conference, the Southern Baptist Church Music Conference, and the American Choral Directors Association.

He has served on the Board of Directors of The Fort Worth Civic Music Association, The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra Association, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, The Centurymen of the Southern Baptist Convention , and the Southern Baptist Church Music Conference. Previous off ices include president of the Fort Worth Music Teachers Association and the Fort Worth Voice Teachers Forum, vice­ president of the Texas Association of Music Schools, president of the Southern Baptist Church Conference, and Lieutenant Governor of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and chairman of its Committee on Adjudication. Dr . McKinney has extensive experience and repertoire in vocal performance, having appeared in oratorio, recital, or in the South and Southwest, in California, and in Israel, Jordan, Bankck, Hong Kong, Taipeh, and Tokyo. He has performed with the Fort Worth Opera, -he Fort Worth Symphony, the Texas Boys Choir, The Beaumont Civic Opera, the Shreveport Symphony, Casa Manana Musicals, as well as many college and church performances, and in television productions of Amahl ' and th e�ht Visitors. He has served as baritone soloist at the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, California, and at leading Texas churches.

Dr. McKinney also has an established reputation as "teacher of voice teachers." Accomplished vocalists seek him out as a "trouble shooter" for vocal problems, and he is a frequent participant in workshops. Choral performance and adjudication are other areas of activity. He directs the Men's Chorus at Southwestern Seminary, and has participated in state-vide choral clinics and festivals in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Missouri, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Texas. In addition, he is an author, having written four beginning theory texts, two programmed instruc tion kits on Vocal Development, a basic text on singing, and has contributed to national periodicals.

In the summer of 1969, Dean McKinney spent three weeks in the Orient during which time he was on the facu lty of a church music institute in Hong Kong, took part in concerts in Hong Kong and Tokyo, and lectured on vocal pedagogy in Taipeh, Taiwan. During his 1971-72 teaching assignment in Hong Kong, he was an active participant in the music activities of the city; did some editorial work on a Chinese language hyrr�al and directed a vocal workshop in Bangkok, Thailand.

The McKinneys are members of the Western Hills Baptist Church in Fort Worth, where Mrs. McKinney has been church pianist, and he has served as a deacon, i nter im minister of music, and as Chairman of the Pulpit Committee.

Dean McKinney spent the 1979-80 school year �tudying in London, England, and has recently completed a new voice pedagogy textbook entitled The Diagnosis and Correction of Vocal Faults which has been published by Broadman.
