EOGHAN MURPHY TD Representing You in Dáil Éireann NEWSLEttER 04, 2012 Investigating Public Accounts The Public Accounts Committee recently published two reports: on the Irish Red Cross, and on VAT costs on the National Aquatic Centre. These are important documents produced by the one committee in Dail Eireann that is empowered to investigate public spending and whether or not value for money is being achieved for the taxpayer. On the PAC, I have also taken the lead investigating activities in NAMA, the €3.6bn accounting error in Finance and the Poolbeg Incinerator. I am also a member of the sub- committee for the coming Banking Enquiry, which will release its first report soon. I was the first government member to introduce a private members bill: The Smarter REAREADD INSIINSIDED E ➤ ➤ ➤ ➤ ➤ ➤ ➤ Transport Bill 2011. This Bill will give power to local authorities to introduce electric cars and car sharing car Page clubs to our city streets. Car clubs are like Dublinbikes, ❶ DublinBikes, but with cars but with cars. This should make car use cheaper and ❶ Investigating Public Accounts easier for individuals, while also having a positive impact on the local environment. It is hoped the new laws will ❷ Entrepreneurs making moves in Dublin come in to effect in the first quarter of 2013. ❸ Bringing transparency to how we spend your money ❸ Smarter communications ❸ Local reports ❹ Report a Problem ❹ Raise a National Issue EOGHAN MURPHY TD - Working for you Entrepreneurs Making Moves in Dublin ● In March we saw the Irish University Entrepreneurs Forum officially launch with an event to connect business leaders and investors with entrepreneurs in third level institutions. Eight entrepreneurs made very impressive pitches on the night, followed by a detailed Q&A session. The IUEF is about showcasing young talent and providing a channel for these aspiring entrepreneurs to discuss ideas and secure capital and/or mentorship. ● April saw Sandbox launch its first Dublin Hub with John Egan appointed as Dublin Ambassador. The Taoiseach was on hand for the launch at government buildings and I was asked to come on board as a Dublin advisor. Sandbox is an international network that aims to increase opportunities for young leaders in business and other fields. With An Taoiseach Enda Kenny launching an investor day ● StartUp Bootcamp held an investor day in May for for small tech businesses at the StartUp Bootcamp its ten start-up companies. The Taoiseach and I were in attendance to wish the new companies well and to meet with international investors, as well as Silicon Valley Bank. The Bootcamp incubates and accelerates Irish and foreign start-ups looking to use Dublin as their launch pad. It’s located beside DogpatchLabs down on Barrow street, the first international hub of the established San Francisco incubator. Dublin continues to move forward as the tech capital of Europe. ● Have you heard of Archie Talks? This is a regular get together of new and aspiring entrepreneurs. I spoke to them in April about government getting out of the way of small businesses and you can watch the video on-line on my website. This Bill is about giving you greater information about how the government spends your taxes. Every year, each taxpayer will receive an annual statement. This statement will tell you how the government allocates the taxes you pay to each department, and how the department then spends that money, all in simple euros and cents. This Bill will be debated soon and Minister Noonan has responded positively to its introduction. Meeting a personal hero when US Senator George Mitchell visited the Oireachtas in April Smarter Communications Supporting Sports in the Community Last year I was asked by the Taoiseach to Chair Fine Gael’s Internal Committee on Transport, Sport and Tourism. This year the committee has worked with Minister Michael Ring to devise a new sports capital grant programme. The fund is worth €30million and will benefit small sporting clubs around the country. Applications closed in June and awards will be announced in the autumn.
