Some Notes and Comments AGM of the Association The AGM took place on the 12 th April 2013. There was a good attendance of members. Reports from the chairman, secretary, treasurer environment and planning officer were presented and a new committee was elected for the coming year. No 52 June 2013 The formal meeting was followed by members question time. Issues raised were -the lack of proper pedestrian facilities in Rathgar, the new A view from the Chairman John McCarthy property tax, planning issues and enforcement, the state of pavements after last Autumn’s leaf fall and the continuing problem of dog fouling. It is that time of year when we should be out enjoying our gardens, our leafy suburbs, linear parks and river banks. However with very poor weather we are Annual Garden Competition limited in what we can do. Having that said, we have to make the effort toget up The judging of front gardens in the Rathgar area will be conducted in late and get on with living. EOGHAN MURPHY TD Representing You in Dáil Éireann NEWSLEttER 04, 2012 Investigating Public Accounts The Public Accounts Committee recently published two reports: on the Irish Red Cross, and on VAT costs on the National Aquatic Centre. These are important documents produced by the one committee in Dail Eireann that is empowered to investigate public spending and whether or not value for money is being achieved for the taxpayer. On the PAC, I have also taken the lead investigating activities in NAMA, the €3.6bn accounting error in Finance and the Poolbeg Incinerator. I am also a member of the sub- committee for the coming Banking Enquiry, which will release its first report soon. Eoghan questioning officials from NAMA at the Public Accounts Committee DublinBikes, but with Cars! Improving how we get around the city has been one of my priorities since the election. I was the first government member to introduce a private members bill: The Smarter REAREADD INSIINSIDED E ➤ ➤ ➤ ➤ ➤ ➤ ➤ Transport Bill 2011. This Bill will give power to local authorities to introduce electric cars and car sharing car Page clubs to our city streets. Car clubs are like Dublinbikes, ❶ DublinBikes, but with cars but with cars. This should make car use cheaper and ❶ Investigating Public Accounts easier for individuals, while also having a positive impact on the local environment. Accordingly, we have today issued an open letter, addressed to all political parties and candi- dates participating in the current general election. In it, we call for a single, simple, commit- ment: that you will act as early as possible in the term of the next D´ailto establish a Citizens’ Convention for a Post-Carbon Ireland. The full letter, explaining and motivating this request, and including the names and affiliations of all twenty nine signatories, is attached below. Weekly Newsletter Issue 424 Business for week beginning 07/11/16 Notice of Appointments Thursday 3 November The Royal Society has announced the 44 researchers who have been appointed to the prestigious position of University Research Fellow for 2016. Among these researchers, from all over the UK and Ireland, two members of Trinity College Dublin’s research team were named. Dr Richard Hobbs and Dr John Goold both work in research functions in STEM fields. The Fellowships aim to support scientist early in their career and is funded by the Science Foundation of Ireland (SFI) for Irish researchers. The Fellowship will support both researchers for the next five years. Dr Hobbs is a Principal Investigator at TCD’s Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices (CRANN). Dr Goold is researching thermodynamics for quantum technologies. University College Dublin (UCD) and the University of Limerick (UL) also had members of staff appointed. Social Welfare Bill 2016 Next week’s Dáil Éireann discussions will see the new Social Welfare Bill 2016 reach its Second Stage. Among the provisions of the Bill will be many of the financial measures announced in the Government’s Budget 2017 announcement last month. This includes a rise in state pensions, some social welfare payments, and an increased Christmas bonus for Christmas 2016. It will also provide details of the exact date in March that new social welfare increases will become effective. In Leader’s Questions late last month, Minister for Michael Noonan TD also outlined new protections for farmers this budgetary term. Previous cuts to farm assistance will be reversed. -

This year’s Conference will be the first YFG National Conference in the organisation’s 44-year history to be held online, and I also hope that it will be the last. The pandemic has forced all of us in YFG to adapt quickly and dynamically to remain relevant and on this front, I believe we have succeeded. Our policies and campaigns have focussed on advocating for sensible, practical solutions to issues relevant to young people. We have sought to modernise Young Fine Gael through the relaunch of our website, the expansion of our social media presence to new platforms and a larger audience and the launch of the YFG Women’s Network, placing a renewed focus on the importance of greater female participation in politics. For the first time in its history, YFG was forced to run the entirety of its recruitment campaign online as Ireland went into lockdown. Despite the challenges we faced, our branches across the country can take pride in the fact that together, we delivered YFG’s first year-on-year increase in membership since 2016. -

The joint committee went into private session at 9.06 a.m. and resumed in public session at 9.40 a.m. Sláintecare Implementation Strategy: Discussion Chairman: In our first session, we are meeting the Minister for Health, Deputy Harris, and his officials, and Ms Laura Magahy, the recently appointed executive director of Sláintecare regarding the Sláintecare strategy. On behalf of the committee I welcome the Minister and Ms Magahy to the committee. I draw attention to the fact that by virtue of section 17(2)(l) of the Defamation Act 2009, witnesses are protected by absolute privilege in respect of their evidence to this committee. However, if they are directed by the committee to cease giving evidence on a particular matter and continue to so do, they are entitled thereafter only to qualified privilege in respect of their evidence. -
