Press release, February 9, 2016 H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf to visit Japan as part of IVA delegation The Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) will be in Japan 15–20 February to meet Prime Minister Shinzō Abe and His Majesty the Emperor Akihito. IVA’s Royal Technology Mission (RTM) is an international delegation tour focusing on technology, science and industry. The theme for the 2016 mission is modern Japan and the transformation the country will need to make to take advantage of its strengths and to meet new challenges. “Japan has an impressive culture of enterprise with considerable global success, highly developed quality awareness and a careful approach to safety,” says IVA’s Chairman Leif Johansson. “Sweden has a lot to learn from this.” After the delegates land in Japan they will visit the soaring Skytree TV tower where they will watch a presentation on the technology that has made it possible to build such a tall structure in an earthquake-affected area like Tokyo. In the evening there will be a dinner hosted by Ambassador Magnus Robach. The agenda for day two will include a visit to technology company Hitachi and two distinguished universities: University of Tokyo and Tokyo Women’s Medical University (TWMU). On Thursday (day three) the delegates will visit Miraikan, a large science and technology museum, where they will view exhibits and watch presentations by Japanese astronauts. A press conference will also be held (a separate media invitation will be issued). On Friday the delegation will travel on Japan’s famous high-speed rail system, Shinkansen, to Nagoya where the delegates will visit aircraft company Mitsubishi Regional Jet and car manufacturer Toyota. At Toyota they will also have the chance to test drive the company’s new fuel cell vehicle Mirai. Upon their return to Tokyo the delegates will meet Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzō Abe in the afternoon and later H.M. the King will meet Japan’s Emperor Akihito for dinner and discussion. Participants in the mission to Japan are H.M. the King, H.E. Ambassador Magnus Robach, IVA Chairman (also Chairman of Ericsson and AstraZeneca) Leif Johansson and IVA President Björn O. Nilsson, as well as a group of prominent Swedish industry leaders. The focus of the mission: • Public and private sector technology and research initiatives to remain a strong research nation. • Promoting innovation – initiatives by the government and companies to enable new ideas to reach the market in the form of new products and services. • Corporate structures – including product portfolios, supply of talent and growth strategies. “IVA is proud and pleased to be able to arrange such inspiring and important meetings and visits during the Royal Technology Mission to Japan,” says Björn O. Nilsson, President of IVA. “The role played by H.M. the King in bringing about these meetings cannot be overstated. We are also very happy that the delegation is made up of distinguished industry and research profiles.
