Introduction: This document provides a guidance to Dungeon Masters and Players to the happenings around Hillsfar as written for Community Created Contents for Adventurers League from Fresno, California. This document is for use to improve immersion into the Hillsfar setting used by the Fresno CCC writers.

This document will have the following details: • Details for each NPCs, background, and specific adventure guidance • Details of the Army of Hillsfar and units belonging to local factions • Details of the leaders and key NPCs for the five factions

Using this Supplement

The “NPCs in Hillsfar” document is a Supplement for Dungeon Masters (DM) running Community Created Content (CCC) published for Fresno, California. It can be used in conjunction with the modules to provide more background and bring the city of Hillsfar to life in new ways. Currently, Fresno publishes CCC modules through three annual conventions:

A Roleplaying Supplement

This supplement provides DMs with a reference to notable NPCs in the city of Hillsfar as designed by Fresno CCC writers. As time passes, more and more NPCs will be added to this composition as the overall storyline develops and more modules releases. The supplement also provides DMs with pictures for new NPCs not introduced in DDAL/DDEX adventures, allowing DMs an opportunity to share these pictures with their players and bring the story to life.

In CCC – SQC – 02 – 01 None the Wiser, there is a player handout for each NPC introduced as of August 2018. In all future modules it is unlikely for writers to include this large document. This supplement will be uploaded separately as a Pay What You Want instead.

My hope is that DMs will get the chance to create a more immersive experience for their players, especially for those who run or play multiple Fresno CCCs. DMs can add and introduce NPCs as needed, allowing for more customized modules that incorporate characters the DM thinks the player characters will be able to engage with on a more meaningful level. For example, if a player interacted with Sir Rohan in None the Wiser and wanted to speak with him again in Last Gasp, a DM who may not have information about Sir Rohan in Last Gasp’s document. Instead the DM can read up about him in this publication and decide how to include that NPC. This way, Hillsfar can feel more alive, and the players can become more invested in the setting.

Concept behind the Design

Self-disclosure time, Hillsfar and the incidents of the Rage of Demon are some of my favorite setting. I begin playing D&D in Season 3 and thus was most invested as a player at that time. A year after that I became Local Coordinator in Fresno and had to organize/DM most of the time. Thus, I had much less time playing and would never be as invested into a setting as I did with Hillsfar and the Underdark. Sample file The setting also provides a lot of stories for writers to work on. Racism is prominent in Hillsfar. Abolishing the Great Law of Humanity wasn’t going to “cure” racism, this is a topic explored to a

certain extent in modules with the introduction of the “tainted” humans. These humans come from lower income group who were explored to corrupted water source and developed demonic features. Other humans and even some non-humans discriminate this community.

While the Demonlords have been banished by great heroes, their minions still lingers around. Dealing with the remaining cult and fanatics will be the key story arc for our very first storyline.

Hillsfar also seats close to the Comanthor Forest, the Underdark, and North Keep. These places provide nearly infinite freedom for the writers to produce interesting adventures for our storyline.

The Red War

Karl Davion, Righteous Hand of the Order of Gauntlet, has been appointed as the leader of the local factions in Hillsfar. Other high-ranking faction members have also taken up station here. The mysterious ‘Zhent’ and Captain Tanheel both work alongside Karl to aid the First Lord. While his day job is to protect and advise First Lord Vuhm Yestral, Karl Davion has another goal while in Hillsfar. He works towards building a military force in the city to act against the Thayans after the events of the Red War.

This document also documents current available military might within the Hillsfar region.

I mainly record results from the premiering convention. However, I welcome results to be reported to me via email so that there is a more accurate record of how people choose to play, and so that players get to actually impact where the story goes.
