    Chemical misconceptions 33 Word equations Target level These materials are designed for use with 11–14 year old students who have been taught to use word equations. The materials will also be useful for 14–16 year olds students who need to revisit this topic. Topic Using word equations to represent chemical reactions. Rationale Many students find it difficult to write word equations, which require an appreciation of the nature of chemical change (including conservation of matter), and familiarity with chemical names and the patterns of common reaction types. These materials provide probes for exploring whether students can complete word equations, and a set of practice exercises. These ideas are discussed in Chapter 9 of the Teachers’ notes. In the pilot teachers judged the materials ‘excellent’, ‘very useful’ and ‘helpful for revision’. Some teachers found the responses of some of their pupils to be ‘disappointing’ (or even ‘shocking’). The probes were thought to provide an interesting ‘look into [students’] minds’ and to lead to useful classroom discussion. Although teachers found it useful that students were asked to give reasons for their answers, some of the students did not like having to try to explain their reasons. (Some teachers may wish to ask students to just complete the equations in the probes, and to leave the spaces for making notes when going through the answers.) Zinc has been extensively studied in neoplastic processes but its role in children with leukemia still remains to be elucidated in several aspects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of oral zinc supplementation on weight gain and infectious episodes in children and adolescents with acute leukemia. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study included 38 patients, and was carried out as a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled investigation. The dosage of plasma zinc levels and the evaluation of nutritional status were performed during a period of 60 days. Zinc was supplemented orally, 2 mg/kg/day, in the form of amino acid salt. RESULTS: The results showed that plasma zinc concentrations did not increase significantly with the addition of the micronutrient. However, from a clinical point of view, it has become evident that supplementary zinc exerts a positive effect on nutritional status as positive weight gain. Moreover, the number of infection episodes was significantly reduced, possibly because of the immune stimuli. CONCLUSIONS:

D. WILSON INTRODUCTION The dithiocarbamates have now been used as fungicides in Ohio, experimentally or otherwise, for more than 15 years ( 4) . F ermate (ferbam), or ferric dimethyl dithiocarbamate, was the first of these to be used on tomatoes and potatoes, to which it was applied both as spray and dust mixtures prepared from a wettable powder formulation ( 1, 2). Dithane and Parzate have now been tested experimentally for several years both as wettable powders (zineb) and as "tank-mix" formulations of solubilized zinc sulfate plus liquid disodium ethylene bis dithiocarbamate (nabam). There has always been some question as to which type of formulation is capable of giving the best control of such diseases as the early and late blights of potato and tomato ( 10, 12). During the same period, as good or better results were being obtained with a slurry form of zinc dimethyl dithiocarbamate than with the cor­ responding wettable powders known as Zerlate and Methasan (ziram) (16,17,18). The wettable powder formulations of such fungicides as ferbam, ziram, and zineb are prepared by the manufacturer for use in spray and dust applications. The active ingredients of these powder formulations, which are comparatively insoluble and non-wettable, are made wettable by adding wetting and/or conditioning agents.

Abstract Background: Pityriasis versicolour is a common skin problem of cosmetic importance among young individuals. Many modality of the treatment have been used to control this disease, but often end with relapse. Zinc sulfate had been proven to have antifungal activity invitro study. Still we are searching for a new therapeutic agent like zinc sulfate. Objective: The aim of the present work is to assess the therapeutic effectiveness of topical 15% zinc sulfate solution in treatment of tinea versicolor. Patients& Methods: This single blinded controlled therapeutic trail was carried out in Department of Dermatology and Venereology - Baghdad Teaching Hospital, during the period from May 2004- Sept. 2004. Patients consisted of 60 person (40 males&20 females) and their ages ranged from 15 – 45 years with a mean ± SD of 32 ± 3 years, while the duration of the disease was 2-30 ( 5.18 ± 4.77) months. These patients were enrolled in this study and were divided into two groups:- Group A: Thirty patients (16 males and 14 females) were treated with topical 15% zinc sulfate solution once daily and examine every week for three weeks and followed up for one month without therapy. Mycological and Wood's light examination were performed to establish diagnosis before therapy and repeated every week to asses the response to therapy. Group B: Thirty patients (24 males and 6 females) were treated with distilled water as a placebo treated group and with a similar manner in group A.
