The last couple of weeks has seen the Harbour host ‘The Banks Peninsula Festival’ to great success… Congratulations to Lyttleton’s ‘SUPER’ chef Anna for winning the mystery cook off. Black Cat ran a fully booked trip over to Ripapa Island last Sunday, a tour that is very much in demand and we hope they run more.

J. C. Derby, the V.R.C. Derby, the Oaks, Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate, Auckland Cup (both codes), New Zealand Cup (both codes) and Wellington Cup. Area 1 Row A Robert John Witty. Robert John Witty (‘Peter’ to his friends) was born in Nelson in 1913 and attended Christchurch Boys’ High School, College House and Canterbury College. Ordained priest in 1940, he was Vicar of New Brighton, St. Luke’s and Lyttelton. He reached the position of Archdeacon. Director of the British Sailors’ Society from 1945 till his death, he was, in 1976, awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for his work with seamen. Unofficial exorcist of the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch, Witty did not look for customers; rather they found him. He said of one Catholic lady: “Her priest put her on to me; they have a habit of doing that”. Problems included poltergeists, shuffling sounds, knockings, tapping, steps tramping up and down stairways and corridors, pictures turning to face the wall, cold patches of air and draughts. Witty heard the ringing of Victorian bells - which no longer existed - in the hallway of St. Luke’s vicarage. He thought that the bells were rung by the shade of the Rev. Arthur Lingard who came home to die at the vicarage then occupied by his parents, Eleanor and Archdeacon Edward Atherton Lingard. In fact, Arthur was moved to Miss Stronach’s private hospital where he died on 23 December 1899.

    The Canterbury Association (1848-1852): A Study of Its Members’ Connections By the Reverend Michael Blain Note: This is a revised edition prepared during 2019, of material included in the book published in 2000 by the archives committee of the Anglican diocese of Christchurch to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. In 1850 the first Canterbury Association ships sailed into the new settlement of Lyttelton, New Zealand. From that fulcrum year I have examined the lives of the eighty-four members of the Canterbury Association. Backwards into their origins, and forwards in their subsequent careers. I looked for connections. The story of the Association’s plans and the settlement of colonial Canterbury has been told often enough. (For instance, see A History of Canterbury volume 1, pp135-233, edited James Hight and CR Straubel.) Names and titles of many of these men still feature in the Canterbury landscape as mountains, lakes, and rivers. But who were the people? What brought these eighty-four together between the initial meeting on 27 March 1848 and the close of their operations in September 1852? What were the connections between them? In November 1847 Edward Gibbon Wakefield had convinced an idealistic young Irishman John Robert Godley that in partnership they could put together the best of all emigration plans. Wakefield’s experience, and Godley’s contacts brought together an association to promote a special colony in New Zealand, an English society free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit, an ideal English society sustained by an ideal church of England. BY RODERICK JOHN BUNCE A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2013 iii ABSTRACT James Macandrew, a Scotsman who migrated to Dunedin in 1851, was variously a businessman, twice Superintendent of Otago Province, an imprisoned bankrupt and a Minister of the Crown. He was an active participant in provincial and colonial politics for 36 years and was associated with most of the major political events in New Zealand during that time. Macandrew was a passionate and persuasive advocate for the speedy development of New Zealand’s infrastructure to stimulate the expansion of settlement. He initiated a steamer service between New Zealand and Australia in 1858 but was bankrupt by 1860. While Superintendent of Otago in 1860 and 1867–76 he was able to advance major harbour, transport and educational projects. As Minister of Public Works in George Grey’s Ministry from 1878–79 he promoted an extensive expansion of the country’s railway system. In Parliament, he was a staunch advocate of easier access to land for all settlers, and a promoter of liberal social legislation which was enacted a decade later by the Seddon Government. His life was interwoven with three influential settlers, Edward Gibbon Wakefield, Julius Vogel and George Grey, who variously dominated the political landscape. Macandrew has been portrayed as an opportunist who exploited these relationships, but this study will demonstrate that while he often served these men as a subordinate, as a mentor he influenced their political beliefs and behaviour.

Despite a distinguished academic record and the fact that he was a cousin of British prime minister, Sir Robert Peel, this splendidly named personality seemed forgotten in both places. An initial reconstruction of his career was undertaken as an exploration of the National Library of New Zealand's on-line newspaper archive, Papers Past. This excellent website is not only easily searchable, but also enables users to download digitised text, so quickly making possible the accumulation of material outlining the public side of Willock's life in New Zealand. Jim McAloon, of Victoria University Wellington, agreed to join the project to place Willock's activities in wider context. Jim McAloon has published widely in New Zealand history, and has particular interests in the formation of elites in the South Island, and in the history of the Anglican Church in New Zealand. The authors have been fortunate to make contact with Patrick Willock, of Gisborne in New Zealand's North Island, who confirmed within twenty minutes of receiving an enquiring e-mail from Ireland that he was indeed W.W.

    PUBLIC ART IN CENTRAL CHRISTCHURCH A STUDY BY THE ROBERT MCDOUGALL ART GALLERY 1997 Public Art In Central Christchurch A Study by the Robert McDougall Art Gallery 1997 Compiled by Simone Stephens Preface Christchurch has an acknowledged rich heritage of public art and historically, whilst it may not be able to claim the earliest public monument in New Zealand, it does have the earliest recognised commissioned commemorative sculpture in the form of the Godley statue by Thomas Woolner. This was unveiled in August 1867. Since that date the city has acquired a wide range of public art works that now includes fountains and murals as well as statues and sculpture. In 1983 the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, with the assistance of two researchers on a project employment scheme, undertook to survey and document 103 works of art in public places throughout Christchurch. Unfortunately even though this was completed, time did not permit in-depth research, or funding enable full publication of findings. Early in 1997, Councillor Anna Crighton, requested that the 1983 survey be reviewed and amended where necessary and a publication produced as a document describing public art in the city. From June until December 1997, Simone Stephens carried out new research updating records, as many public art works had either been removed or lost in the intervening fourteen years. As many of the more significant public art works of Christchurch are sited between the four Avenues of the inner city, this has been the focus of the 1997 survey the results of which are summarised within this publication.

The choice among these is examined using demarcation, topographical, and soil quality datasets with qualitative, historical information. We find centralized systems provide coordination benefits, but adoption is less likely when implementation is slow and controlling settlement is costly. Within centralized systems, we find uniform rectangular demarcation lowers transaction costs, but its rigid structure is costly in rugged terrain and alternatives are adopted.

Many of the stories I heard then are still vivid in my memory, little episodes illustrating the daily life of a community which had to do everything for itself survey, settle, stock and till the land, build its own roads, bridges and railways, form its own religious, educa- tional, political and social institutions, and construct its own local government. It is no wonder that coming from the valley of the Thames, where the results of centuries of civilisation had come to be accepted as the natural condition of nineteenth century existence, I found the contrast interesting and inspiring.     Gladstone and the Colonial Church Clause: An Episode in Church-State Relations, 1849—1850 I am astonished that he seems in his argument so completely to have supplanted principles. I looked upon the right hon. Gentleman as the last paladin of principle, the very abstraction of chivalry. .1 We are still amused at Disraeli’s wit in so taunting Gladstone from the floor of the House of Commons in 1845 in response to his support of an increase to the Roman Catholic seminary at Maynooth. Our amusement is not, however, at Gladstone’s expense. It is impossible to make a serious assessment of his career, scarcely of a week of his ordinary activities, and say that we are not in the presence of an extraordinary man. Yet the ironies in Gladstone’s life are as thick as his achievements. Had he never disestablished the Anglican Church in Ireland and become the champion of the nonconformists, we might be laughing at him with the M.P.s of 1845. But as it is, we can only ponder the mysteries of God and man that enable a sincere believer in The State in its Relations with the Church to write A Chapter of Autobiography, and “the rising hope of the stern, unbending Tories” to become “The People’s William.” William Gladstone was a force in politics from the first time he uttered a speech in the House of Commons in 1833. He was early marked among great men as a rising great man himself. He was a gifted orator. But he was naïve and idealistic.
