DAVID SCOTT COWPER M/V POLAR BOUND THE OCC SEAMANSHIP AWARD • Lisa Blair s/v Climate Action Now (Aust), for a solo circumnavigation of Antarctica, which included a dismasting of her Open 50 • Benchmark time: 103d, 7h, 21m, 38s • Total elapsed time: 183d, 7h, 21m, 38s LISA BLAIR S/V CLIMATE ACTION NOW THE OCC AWARD • David Register m/v Dyad (US), for conceiving and leading development of the OpenCPN chart plotter and navigational planning open source software DAVID REGISTER M/V DYAD THE OCC JESTER AWARD • Josh Ghyselincks s/v Maistral (Canada), for sailing solo 2900 miles in 24 days from Mexico to the Marquesas in an Arpege 29 built by Michael Dufour in 1967 using only a poled-out storm jib for self steering. JOSH GHYSELINCKS S/V MAISTRAL “A sailor is an artist whose medium is the wind. Live passionately, even if it kills you, because something is going to kill you anyway.“ ― Webb Chiles AWARDS OPEN ONLY TO OCC MEMBERS THE VASEY VASE • Andrew and Janice Fennymore-White s/v Destiny (UK), who spent eight years building their exquisite Van de Stadt Samoa 48 and have now lived aboard in the Arctic for four years. • Andy and Janice have prepared their vessel and themselves for a prolonged, multiyear, liveaboard voyage in polar regions. Their planning and obvious skills make their considerable achievements look effortless. www.facebook.com/yachtdestiny • FF 2017/2 ANDREW AND JANICE FENNYMORE-WHITE S/V DESTINY THE DAVID WALLIS TROPHY • Fergus and Katherine Quinlan for their article The Russian Voyage, which appeared in Flying Fish 2017/1. SPECIAL MENTION • Graham and Avril Johnson, whose three articles during the year – Pig Tales and Bank Notes, in FF 2017/1, and Sweet Carolines in FF 2017/2 were very much enjoyed by all concerned. THE QUALIFIER’S MUG • Megan Clay (UK) for an ambitious Atlantic Circuit with her husband Ed (non-member) aboard Flycatcher of Yar, a Contessa 38 which they co-own with Ed’s parents. • During their 400-day cruise, the majority of which was sailed two- handed, they covered 16,450 miles and visited 240 harbours and anchorages. • Hippos to Humpbacks: A North Atlantic Circuit appeared in Flying Fish 2017/1. Roosevelt AWARDS OPEN TO PORT OFFICERS & PORS OCC PORT OFFICER SERVICE AWARD Gary Naigle & Greta Gustavson, POs Pilot House, Norfolk VA (USA) • Their helpfulness, kindness, and hospitality are second to none, witnessed time and time again ever since their appointment in 1993. OCC PORT OFFICER RALLY AWARD Peter Flutter, PO Falmouth, UK • A jovial dinner at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club is followed next day by a cruise upriver to a midstream pontoon for further parties, both on the pontoon itself and aboard the larger yachts, primarily Peter’s own Tyrian of Truro. OCC PORT OFFICER EVENTS AWARD Robert Ravensberg, POR Cape Town, SA • Has single-handedly organised the Cape Town get-togethers, pulling in skippers and crews from multiple marinas and different times of arrival as they manage their South African east coast passage. He has hosted a day of wine tasting and lunch at the Cape Vineyards, handles all the OCC members’ needs and queries and recruits new members as qualified passage makers arrive.
