Metaphors in Madness Narratives
humanities Article A Mind Trying to Right/Write Itself: Metaphors in Madness Narratives Renana Stanger Elran Independent Researcher, Modiin 7172420, Israel; [email protected] Received: 20 February 2019; Accepted: 19 June 2019; Published: 25 June 2019 Abstract: This article explores autobiographical madness narratives written by people with lived experience of psychosis, dated from the mid-19th century until the 1970s. The focus of the exploration is on the metaphors used in these narratives in order to communicate how the writers experienced and understood madness from within. Different metaphors of madness, such as going out of one’s mind, madness as an inner beast, another world, or a transformative journey are presented based on several autobiographical books. It is argued that these metaphors often represent madness as the negative picture of what it is to be human, while the narrative writing itself helps to restore a sense of belonging and personhood. The value and function of metaphors in illness and madness narratives is further discussed. Keywords: psychosis; madness; schizophrenia; narrative; autobiography; metaphor; history of 1. Introduction Madness challenges the mainstream way of being a person in the world; going out of one’s mind is also going out of the matrix of normative thoughts, emotions, and actions. A person going through a psychotic episode (psychosis being the archetypal representation of madness) is deeply convinced by the subjective experience of reality, though it seems unlikely or even bizarre and differs from what is understood by others to be real. When psychotic experiences are looked upon in retrospect, the story of the self in times of madness can seem to the person themselves as deeply intimate but also as strange and alien, both profound and meaningless at the same time. -

I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. 1 Abstract Theatre as public discourse: a dialogic project This project aims to develop and explore questions of theatre as public discourse and the representation of England and Englishness in contemporary British theatre during the period 2000-2010. I present a dual focus in this practice-led research process, creating an original creative work, Albion Unbound, alongside an academic thesis. I describe the relationship between play and thesis as ‘dialogic’ with reference to the work of Mikhail Bakhtin. His ideas on language, subjectivity and authorship offer an insightful perspective upon the theory and practice of theatre- making, but Bakhtin himself makes a concerted claim for drama’s inherent monologism, generically incapable of developing genuine dialogic relations between its constituent voices. Chapter One explores the ‘case against drama’ and identifies the different senses of theatrical dialogism which emerge in critical response. Chapter Two considers Bakhtin’s work around carnival, the grotesque and the history of laughter, framed within a debate about the ‘politics of form’ in the theatrical representation of madness and mental illness. -

Abstract This thesis examines the theme of women’s madness in the 1960s and 1970s through the works of four EngLish and French writers and fiLm-makers: ChantaL Akerman, Emma Santos, Jane Arden and Mary Barnes. It examines how these four writers and fiLm-makers inscribe madness into their texts from a socioLogicaL angLe, presenting the texts and fiLms discussed as socio-historicaL artefacts whiLe anaLysing each writer and fiLm-maker’s representation of women’s madness. Inspired by psychoLogist PhylLis Chesler, who argues that madness is tied to sociaLLy defined gender roLes and used to demarcate vioLations of expected gendered behaviour, this research anaLyses various manifestations of ‘madness’ from the everyday madness of ChantaL Akerman, to psychiatricaLLy incarcerated madness in the texts of Emma Santos, to madness infLuenced by anti-psychiatry through the works of Jane Arden, to compLete immersion in anti-psychiatry with Mary Barnes. -

This is the only story I will ever be able to tell. Donna Tartt, The Secret History Biography Mary Barnes was born in Portsmouth, England in 1923, the eldest child of four siblings. When Mary was a young child, the family moved to the outskirts of London which was, at that time, countryside. Her brother Peter was born when Mary was two and a half and her sister Ruth was born when Mary was eight years old. When Mary was thirteen, her mother almost died during her last labour with Dorothy. Barnes describes Mary having a difficult childhood, with Mary being jealous of her younger brother Peter, and also having difficulty with her speech and social relationships with other children. As Mary failed her eleven plus examination, she was educated in a technical college, and at the age of seventeen pursued a career in nursing. -

Well, we managed it, and it’s down to the team. I’m particularly grateful to Phil Ruthen, and Gemma Seltzer of the Arts Council for all their feedback and suggestions. Our brief is mentoring and it’s a new generation of mentoring access and opportunities, using new media such as film, and e-books, social media and events. We hope to integrate these far more than we have before. This includes e-books and the possible franchising of other e-books poets might produce. We’ve already had a couple of initiatives on that and I feel that the possibilities are limitless. E-books – to which I’ll return in a moment, feed into that other looming thing we woke from in May, and indeed the recent July 8th pronouncements by the chancellor. Less savage than trumpeted, these delay the appalling cuts promised, rather than forego them altogether, but it may be a measure of how we can resist this, and kick such things permanently into touch, and score an own try of the government with it. -

Villacañas de Castro1 Accepted: 7 August 2021 © The Author(s) 2021 Abstract This article presents a Deweyan reading of the processes of critique, experimenta- tion, and reform that took hold of a minority of psychiatric institutions in Western Europe during the nineteen-sixties and seventies, under the infuence of the so-called Italian and British antipsychiatry movements. Framed within a specifc understand- ing of the sixties, the article examines these complex theoretical and institutional operations against the background of John Dewey’s idea of democracy, which it interprets, above all else, as the constant provision of material, intellectual, and human resources for the people to directly transform their environment and them- selves in increasingly complex and creative ways. After acknowledging the histori- cal and conceptual discontinuities that exist between these two autonomous bodies of knowledge, the frst section presents a summary of Dewey’s philosophy. Next the article sheds light on Basaglia’s and Laing’s antipsychiatric projects by interpreting them as a sustained efort to distinguish between schizophrenia as a frst and a sec- ond disease, an epistemological search in the midst of which each of them ended up creating new institutions that necessarily embarked their inmates on a radical pro- cess of Deweyan growth. The key role of the sixties counterculture is emphasized at this point, and examples from Gorizia’s and Trieste’s asylums, as well as British community households, are read in terms of Basaglia’s and Laing’s negative and afrmative dialectics, respectively.
