Why do we celebrate Mother’s Day? It may come as a surprise to some that the tradition of “Mother’s Day” springs from the ancient celebration of goddesses and symbols of motherhood. In more modern times, the English began “Mothering Day” on a Lenten Sunday and allowed breaking the Lenten fast with a family dinner, cakes and gifts. Our first settlers stopped the “Mothering Day” observance as a rejection of the Church of England, and began their own “Mother’s Day” observance many years later. In 1908 Anna M. Jarvis petitioned to have the first official Mother’s Day celebration which occurred on May 10, 1908. The tradition of flowers being given began with Anna arranging to have white carnations given to all mother’s who attended the celebration. Today the white carnations are used to honor deceased Mothers and pink or red carnations pay tribute to Mothers who are still with us. Though some feel that the holiday has become too commercial, most appreciate the focus on Mom Shop Beach Street Mall and availability of mom-oriented gifts. Mothers today are able to enjoy not only their children’s handmade cards, but the special brunches, boxes of sweets, the special gifts, jewelry and even Everything under the sun for mom! special get-away opportunities that focus on Mom. 774070 No matter what you can afford, make sure you make your Mother feel special this Mother’s Day - she will appreciate it!!
