After a short stop on our way out of Netanya we head north to S’dot Yamto hear about Hannah Senesh.We will continue on to the Kinneret Courtyard (Hatzer Kinneret), thebeating heart of the Second Aliyah at the turn of the 20th century.Young people fleeing from pogroms arrived in a desolate country withthe cherished dream of establishing a national home for the Jewishpeople by the work of their own hands. From these humble beginnings,but based on the firm principles of self-reliance, equality, socialjustice and co-operation, the Yishuv emerged as the cornerstone of theKibbutz and Moshav Movements which became the foundations of theemerging new State.A short distance from the Courtyard is the Kinneret Cemetery where manypioneers and leaders of the Labour movement are buried, including BerlKatznelson, Moses Hess and Nachman Syrkin. Located on the shore of thelake, many come here to pay homage to the Hebrew poet, RachelBluwstein, and musician and songwriter, Naomi Shemer.After our lunch break there will be a short poetry session, inspired bythe poets featured in our day.On our way home we will visit Binyamina to hear about Ehud Manor.Full program, details and prices to follow.E: 5/6/18

8pm Netanya AACI Guest Lecture "Can You Please All of the People All of the Time?" with Mayor Oded Ravivi Description: Oded Revivi, Mayor of Efrat, is a statesman, orator, lawyer andprominent advocate for the Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria.His stance on Israeli settlements is clear: They are here to stay andany future peace agreement will have to take that reality into account.He is also a staunch advocate for co-existence and fostering improvedrelationships with Efrat's neighboring Palestinian villages. Under hisleadership the city of Efrat has grown by leaps and bounds which hasnecessitated the building of new schools and kindergartens, communitycenters and synagogues. An outspoken critic of Israel’s securitybarrier, Oded was instrumental in having its route changed and hascampaigned for its total removal, with the belief that Israel should bebuilding bridges with its neighbors, not fences. In July 2016, Oded wasappointed Chief Foreign Envoy of the YESHA Council, acting as theofficial political representative of the Israeli settlement movement tothe international community. His role includes advocacy trips to themajor seats of government worldwide as well as regular meetings withforeign diplomats and journalists based in Israel and abroad to explainthe facts on the ground. 4pm Netanya AACI Israeli Literary Workshop with Michal Fram Cohen - The Works of Yochi Brandes Where: Shmuel HaNatziv St 28, Netanya Description: Israeli Literary Workshop Two Novels by Yochi Brandes: Led by MichalFram Cohen who holds a Ph.D. in Hebrew Literature from Bar-IlanUniversity. She currently works as a Hebrew translator/interpreter andhas a special interest in early Hebrew writers. Michal was the recipient of a grant from the Center for the Study of Women in Judaismat Bar-Ilan University. Israeli author Yochi (Yocheved) Brandes grew upin a Hassidic family. She has a BA in Biblical Studies and an MA inJudaic Studies and has taught Bible and Judaism. Her writing is rootedin her upbringing and her education, but she created new and boldinterpretations of well-known Biblical and Rabbinic narratives. Yochipublished ten novels, of which two were translated into English: TheSecret Book of Kings (Melachim Gimel, 2008) and The Orchard (Ha-Pardesshel Akiva, 2012). The first offers a counter-narrative of the biblicalevents depicted in the books of Samuel and Kings, from theestablishment of the Kingdom of David to its splitting into the Kingdoms of Judea and Israel, from the perspective of the descendantsof the House of Saul. The second offers a retelling of the life ofRabbi Akiva from the perspective of his wife Rachel. Our workshop willcompare each novel with its Biblical or Rabbinic origins, and will alsocompare the extent of deviation and subversion of the originalnarratives. Bassem wasborn in the Jordanian- occupied Old City in East Jerusalem. In 1996, inresponse to the deterioration of the human rights situation under thePA, he founded the Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group (PHRMG),which monitors abuses committed by the PA and deals to some extent withIsrael. It is a non-partisan human rights organization, dedicated toexposing human rights violations and supporting a democratic andpluralistic Palestine. He has written extensively on the subject of UNRWA reform. He is an outspoken critic of the Boycott, Divestment andSanctions movement. Bassem has traveled widely as an expert on thePalestinian-Israeli conflict, addressing multiple internationalconferences and governmental bodies. He has published numerous paperson the subject of Human Rights in the Israeli- Palestinian conflict andis a frequent contributor to The Jerusalem Post and Times of Israel. Heis a dynamic and prolific speaker who has been the recipient ofinternational awards for his work on civil and human rights, seekingdignity for his people and peace with his neighbors. The Israel Intelligence Heritage & Commemoration Center (IICC) isdevoted to shedding light on some of the more secretive chapters inIsrael’s history. Its mission is to honor, remember and preserveinformation about members of Israel’s intelligence agencies, and tocommemorate the fallen from all branches of Israeli Intelligence. TheCenter, a non-governmental organization, was created in response topublic pressure for more transparency. 8am Netanya AACI Tiyul “Anemones, Honey and Bubbles” Where: Kibbutz Yad Mordechai Description: Visiting Kibbutz Yad Mordechai where we will learn about the importanceof honey to agricultural production in Israel and have a chance tosample some honey fresh from an active hive as well as learn howcandles are made from beeswax. Adjacent to Yad Mordechai a wonderfulseasonal treat awaits us - the bright red fields of anemones(kalaniyot), a real feast for the eyes. This tiyul has been scheduledso we can see the red carpets which bloom for only two weeks eachFebruary. Next, a contrast in mood as we visit the Black Arrow Monument(Hachetz Hashachor) near Gaza (conditions permitting) whichmemorializes soldiers from the Paratroop Brigade who fell in the yearsleading up to the Sinai Campaign 1956.
