STAFF t EMU to a 4th place finish at the CAA Championships. S After spending six seasons as an assistant coach, Eastern Michigan University Vice President and Director of Inter- collegiate Athletics Heather Lyke announced Monday, July 7, that Kemp Savage would take over as the head coach

ching of EMU’s rowing program. a o Savage owns 12 years experience of coaching and competing, completing six seasons as the assistant coach in Ypsilanti. The Chesapeake, Va. native arrived at EMU in 2008 following a stint at Old Dominion University.

In his first season at EMU, Savage helped the Eagles receive national recognition, as the team had seven student-

2016 C athletes earn Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete accolades, as Heather Anderson, Kate Dirks, Kristen Dunkin, Anamarie Esteva, Noel McAuliffe, Janelle Mitchell and senior Beth Logsdon all picked up National Scholar-Athlete honors.

In 2013, Savage was an integral part in the training of KC Anderson who earned all-region honors after her perfor- mance in the 2012-13 season, while seven other Eagles were named CRCA National Scholar Athletes.

During Savage’s time with the EMU program, the Green and White has produced three-or-more CRCA National Scholar Athletes every season and has found success in six races in the six-year span.

In all, Savage has had a hand in coaching two first team all-region nominees, one second team all-region student- athlete and 39 CRCA National Scholar Athletes. The Eagles boasted a team-best 10 National Scholar Athletes in the 2013-14 season while Steph Schlosser was named to the 2014 CAA All-Academic team and Krista Burdick was named to the All-CAA team for her efforts in the 2014 season

Prior to joining the EMU rowing staff, Savage spent 2006-07 as the assistant coach for the Old Dominion University club rowing team before taking over as head coach for the 2007-08 season. Under Savage, the ODU men’s novice team placed first at the American Collegiate Rowing Association Nationals, while the women’s varsity team placed third.

A Level III certified US Rowing Coach, Savage was a four-year letterman in rowing at the University of Mary Wash- ington and was a team captain from 2004-06 for the Eagles. While at UMW, the Eagles went to the finals at the ECAC Regatta in 2006 and at the Dad Vail Regatta in 2005.

Savage earned his bachelor’s degree from UMW in biology in 2006 and he obtained his master’s degree in spring 2013 in exercise physiology from Eastern Michigan University.

Savage became the fourth head coach in program’s history following in the footsteps of Charley Sullivan (2000-03), Pamela Besteman (2003-06) and Brad Holdren (2006-14).

29 MIKE BAILEY

Assitant Coach Second Season Univeristy of Wisconsin- Madison 1986 2016 C The 2015-16 season marks the second season for Assistant Coach Mike Bailey.

Eastern Michigan University Head Rowing Coach Kemp Savage has announced the addition of Mike Bailey to his staff as an

assistant coach for the 2014-15 season. Bailey brings a diverse background in coaching experience to the Eagles’ rowing pro- o

gram. a ching “Mike is going to make a superb addition to our rowing staff,” said Savage. “He brings a vast experience in rowing and his suc- cess with his novice athletes is going to be a big benefit in speed with the first year rowers pushing the varsity to get even bet- ter as athletes. Additionally, his background throughout the Midwest will really increase our ability to recruit in the local area.” S

“I am excited about getting my first NCAA Division I opportunity in women’s rowing with Eastern Michigan,” Bailey said. “I am t looking forward to building a program with Coach Savage that will challenge for a spot at the NCAA Championships.” a ff

Bailey has spent the last two years as the head coach of the Purdue University women’s crew team, following a three-year stint as the head coach for Michigan State University’s men’s crew. At MSU, he was named the 2010 American Collegiate Rowing Association’s Men’s Coach of the Year as he broke a 54-year team drought in putting five boats into the Dad Vail grand finals, including winning the novice men’s lightweight 8.

In 2007 Bailey started a brand new NCAA Division III program at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (2007-09), where his teams placed both the novice heavyweight (4th) and lightweight (2nd) men’s eights in the Dad Vail grand finals in their first year, and won the novice lightweight eight in his second year.

While coaching MSOE Bailey also led the Milwaukee Jr’s program to their first ever finals appearances at high school nationals in the Men’s 4, and a third place finish in the women’s 8 at the prestigious Canadian Henley Regatta.

Prior to moving to Milwaukee, Bailey coached at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in his second stint as the assistant varsity men’s coach (1993-94), and with the Mendota Rowing Club Jr.’s (1996-97) where his women’s four qualified for the national championships.

From 1989-1993, Bailey was the program director at UC-Santa Barbara, where his men’s team placed four boats in the grand finals at the 1990 IRA Championships, winning the open 4+, placing third in the 4-, and placing fourth in men’s lightweight 8. His teams also won the 1991 men’s Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic, as well as four consecutive west coast champion- ships in the men’s lightweight 8.

Bailey was inducted into the UCSB Club Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 for the teams he coached during the 1990-1991 seasons.

In 1987 Bailey was hired for his first head coaching job as program director at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Calif. Bailey took the team to it’s first winning season in 16 years along with two grand finals appearances at the 1988 IRA Championships.

Prior to moving to Los Angeles, Bailey was the assistant varsity coach on the 1985-86 University of Wisconsin-Madison men’s National Championship team, and a coxswain there from 1980-1985.

Bailey graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Biology Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1986. He and his wife, Stella, have five children between them, and three grandchildren.

What Makes Us Unique In 1849, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Michigan formally paved the way for the establishment of Michigan State Normal School, with the exclusive purposes of instructing persons in the art of teaching; providing a good common school education; and giving instruction in the mechanic arts, husbandry, agricultural chemistry and the laws of the United States. Since its inception, Eastern Michigan, first as a Normal School, then as a College and finally as a University, has grown and developed to respond to the ever-changing needs of society. Over the years, EMU has educated thousands of sons and daughters of Michigan, the nation, and the world. The university currently serves 23,000 students who are pursuing undergraduate, graduate, specialist, doctoral and certificate degrees in the arts, sciences and professions.
