Houston Æ Gianfranco Walsh Received: 13 October 2006 / Accepted: 11 December 2006 / Published online: 27 March 2007 Ó Springer-Verlag 2007 Abstract Introduction Producing and marketing motion pictures is notoriously risky, with only three out of ten movies breaking even and one becoming profitable at the box office. Extending knowledge on the factors that influence a movie’s box-office and on the interrelations between these factors can be seen as major contribution to aid in lowering the number of failures in the motion picture industry. The major aim of this study is to distinguish direct and indirect effects between potential success drivers and motion picture success by understanding the interrelationships among different determinants of movie success. Methods Hypotheses are developed with regard to the relationships among a number of factors that have been shown to impact motion-picture box office as well as movie profitability. Applying path analysis, which allows a simultaneous testing of factor interrelations, the hypotheses are subsequently tested against a sample of 331 movies. Results and conclusion The factors considered in the analysis explain a remarkable amount of a movie’s success. The tasks performed in that field are knowledge intensive and can often benefit from using additional knowledge from various sources. Therefore, many approaches have been proposed in this area that combine Semantic Web data with the data mining and knowledge discovery process. Semantic Web knowledge graphs are a backbone of many in- formation systems that require access to structured knowledge. Such knowledge graphs contain factual knowledge about real word entities and the relations be- tween them, which can be utilized in various natural language processing, infor- mation retrieval, and any data mining applications. Following the principles of the Semantic Web, Semantic Web knowledge graphs are publicly available as Linked Open Data. Linked Open Data is an open, interlinked collection of datasets in machine-interpretable form, covering most of the real world domains. In this thesis, we investigate the hypothesis if Semantic Web knowledge graphs can be exploited as background knowledge in different steps of the knowledge discovery process, and different data mining tasks. More precisely, we aim to show that Semantic Web knowledge graphs can be utilized for generating valuable data mining features that can be used in various data mining tasks.

    I will BOO PRINTS A Volunteer Newsletter October 2016 Issue #28 National Fire Pup Day, October 1st National Fire Pup Day is observed each year on October 1. This is a day designated to recognize our canine firefighters, the four- footed members of the fire department. In the United States, Dalmatians are commonly known as firehouse dogs. It all began when the use of Dalmatians as carriage dogs was transferred to horse-drawn fire engines. In the days of the horse-drawn fire carts they provided a valuable service, having a natural affinity to horses. They would run alongside the horses, or beneath the cart axles. Today, the Dalmatian serves as a firehouse mascot and is sometimes used to educate the public in fire safety. The horses have long since gone, but the Dalmatians, by tradition, have stayed. As a result, in the United States, Dalmatians are commonly known as firehouse dogs. Dalmatians are still chosen by many firefighters as pets, in honor of their past. The Dalmatian is also the mascot of the Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity. In the past, Pi Kappa Alpha has been known as the firefighters' fraternity, and this is why they both share the Dalmatian as a mascot. "Anheuser-Busch dog" The Dalmatian is also associated, particularly in the United States, with Budweiser beer and the Busch Gardens theme parks, since the Anheuser-Busch company's iconic beer wagon, drawn by a team of Clydesdale horses, is always accompanied by a Dalmatian carriage dog. The company maintains several teams at various locations, which tour extensively.
