I CHRISTMAS DUTY - EDUCATION FOR PEACE AND HARMONY

During the liturgical period of Annunciation we pray in the Holy Mass: “Jesus, Lord of the nations and King of peace come to establish peace and harmony in the whole world and especially in our country”. It is our duty to translate this prayer into action even after Christmas. The right means are various steps in the apostolate of education for enlightening the younger folk. Indeed peace was the message given at the birth of Jesus, “…Peace on earth” (Lk.2.14). A grown- up Jesus understood that his mission was to bring the kingdom in all its fullness to us. His message, - ‘the reign of God is imminent’ - calls for a heart full of love, ears open to the cry of the poor, and hands willing to help. Bringing peace, well-being and joy were the marks of His Kingdom announced through the first Twelve and then with the help of the Seventy two disciples. This was the first step of mass education for reformation. Establishing peace through reformation was the need of the time as St. Peter had pointed out, “Already you have devoted enough time … living lives of debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and wanton idolatry” (1Pet.4.3). St. Paul preached with his band and wrote to the Colossians for another bold step forward, “…put on a new man, one who grows in knowledge as he is formed anew in the image of his Creator” Col.3.10). Of course, the Vincentians are known to have brought some

4 Family Bond -December 2015 reformation in the lives of the grown- ups. Yet to be more successful, to have long lasting results ‘the fishers of men’ have to catch them when they are young. Good formation from the tender age is the need of the time. A concerted Vincentian effort is to be felt in every School and College that we run. The apostolate of education must be seen as a serious means in bringing the ‘euphoria of Christmas’ down to the masses. It should be a group activity rather than a random experiment in achieving an opening to the Missions. It is for establishing the kingdom of peace and glory of God other than any temporal motive. It is for establishing a wiser and mature Bharat founded on healthy ethical grounds that we toil in the Indian circumstances. The public should know that Christmas is not the presentation or exhibition of the well-attired Bp. Nicolas but is the celebration of the birthday of Jesus who inspired Nicolas to make use of his wealth to bring about family welfare among the needy after the pattern of Jesus who shed even his last drop of blood to establish the kingdom joy and peace with the Neighbour and God. Wish you a very happy Christmas and a Brighter New Year!

ABANDONMENT : “THY WILL BE DONE” We are not definitively assured of always remaining on the Lord’s path….During our spiritual childhood, when we have just begun to let ourselves be led by God, we feel his strong and firm hand guiding us. We see in an obvious way what we must do and what we must not do. But it will not always be like that. The person who belong to Christ must live Christ’s whole life. That person must ripen to the point of attainingChrist’s adult age, and one day must start out on the way of the cross… Thus united with Christ, the Christian will persevere even in the dark night … That is why, even and precisely in the midst of the darkest night, “thy will be done.” St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross [], Carmelite. Eager to Share Philip wanted to share with Nathaniel the treasure he had discovered: “We have found the one that wrote about in the Law, and the prophets as well: he is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth” (Jn 1:45). He was impatient to share the riches of Jesus with others, so that they too can be blessed by the treasure that comes to all that know Jesus Christ. No one is able to fill a man’s heart with the happiness and peace that is ours when Jesus dwells within. When we experience His love, peace, and blessing in our lives, we are eager to share Him. We cannot give what we do not have. So, before we can tell others about the Master, we must already have encountered Him and come to know Him. This involves knowing Jesus as the Lord of our lives, knowing Him as a friend, conversing with Him, and accepting Him so completely that we can declare: “Master, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” (Jn 1:49).

DESPERATION I beg you, O Lord, do not leave me sighing of desperation; but rather let me breathe hope… May I at least be allowed to catch a glimpse of the light, even from far away, even from the depths of hell. Teach me to seek you, and when I seek you show yourself to me, for I cannot seek you unless you guide me, nor may I find you unless you show yourself to me. I will seek you in desiring you and desire you in seeking you, find you in loving you and love you in finding you. St. Anselm, . Proslogion. 1

Jesus’ Suffering Two reasons for Jesus’ suffering. The first is that it was a remedy againstsin, and the second is for an example of what we should do … For the passion of Christ can bring about a complete reformation of our livs… If you seek an example of charity, then “no one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (jn 15.13)… If you seek an example of patience, you will find it in its highest degree on the cross… . Your strength is your love. People resist flames, floods, steel; they resist tyrants and kings; let death come and who can resist it? Love alone can match up to its strength. It can be said that love is strong as death. Saint Paul died this death. He said: “The world is crucified to me and I to the world” (Gal 6,14), and those to whom he said: “You have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Col 3,3) died this death. St. Anselm, doctor of the Church. Proslogion. 1

X New Priests: 2015-16

1. Dn. Joseph (Joe) Moolecherry (SJ) A fine stone, taken from the depth of the lake Kuttanad turned to be a diamond after a long process of twelve years and now it is to be placed on the altar of love. This precious stone is none other than Dn. Joe Moolecherry VC. As a son he is a gift to Moolecherry family. As a member our Deacon is an asset to the Vincentian Congregation, as a priest Joseph will be a blessing for all who seek God...... Dn. Joe Moolecherry was born on 3rd December 1975 as the youngest son of Mr. M.S Mathew (late) and Mrs. Leelama Mathew’s three children. He realized his vocation to priesthood while working as a chartered accountant. He completed the minor seminary formation at Mylady and Chethimattam, Pala. He did the novitiate under the guidance of Fr. Abraham Kanjirakkonam and made the first profession on 21st May 2009. After the Novitiate he was sent to De Paul Institute, Bangalore to mould his faith in reason. Completing philosophical studies in record time he went for his practical training at Vincentian Minor Seminaries, Mylady and Munnoorppilly. His final profession was in the year 2013. Dn. Joe Moolecherry successfully completed his theological studies from St. Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary, Mangalapuza bagging ranks under the guidance of Fr. Sebastian Thundathikunnel VC. His priestly ordination is to be conferred by His Grace Mar Mathew Vaniakizhakkel VC and the first Holy Qurbana at 9.00 AM on Saturday, 26th December 2015 at St. Theresas Church, Kavaalam. Though his name is Joe he is well known by another three letter name, ‘SIR’. This is an acronym for three qualities found in him,

52 Family Bond -December 2015

Spirituality, Intelligence and Responsibility. His spiritual life is the result of devotion and dedication; academic life is built on concentration and determination and his social life is the combination of inspiration and perspiration. Dear Dn. Joe, now we all understand why God plucked you from the profession of Chartered Accountant and planted you in the Vincentian Congregation. It was to make you another great CA- Christ’s Ambassador...... We assure you dear Dn. Joe Moolecherry our support and pray that you may be a faithful priest who does what God has in His heart and mind. 2. Dn. Payyappilly (Vineeth) Sebastian (MM) Hailing from the famous parish of Kanjoor, Vineeth was born on 4 January 1989 to Mrs and Mr Aani and Sebastian. Vinod is his brother. He had his primary education at St.Mary’s U.P School and High School at St. Sebastian’s, Kanjoor. Dn. Vineet completed his Minor Seminary course at Christu Nivas, Thrikkakara and Edathotty before he joined the Novitiate at Kalichanadukam in 2007. He became a professed member in the Congregation on 21.5.2008. There after we see him in De Paul, Bangaluru for philosophical studies. His regency was at the Boys Home, Meenangady and theology at Janampet where he shined in prayer life, in play ground and in preaching. He could be approached by anybody for anything. He cared for everyone who needed him. As Vineeth has successfully completed his theology course with stress on spiritual life he is getting ready to be raised to priesthood in the Vincentian Congregation at the hands of Mar Jose Puthenveetil in the full presence of the faithful of the St. Mary’s Forane Church, Kanjoor on27 Dec. 2015. We wish that he exhibits his talents in the apostolic activities of the Congregation and become a blessing to all Dic and Harry according to our motto – ‘Sent to preach to the poor’ . 53 Family Bond -December 2015

3. Dn. John Kollakottil (SJ) Dn. John was born on 11th March of 1989 as the first born of Mr. K.J Abraham and Mrs. Lilly, a God fearing and hardworking couple at Thuruthipally, Pala. Lijo did his primary and secondary schooling from Muttuchira. He joined the Vincentian Minor Seminary, Mylady in 2004 and was admitted to Novitiate from Pala. He made his first commitment in 2007 and reached the garden city to explore philosophy. It will not be wrong to say that he developed as a digital brother from his De Paul days. Of course, he was a studious scholastic there and an inspiration for his juniors. Knowing his talents, he was given the privilege to do his regency at Logos where he served the centre remarkably. Lijo got the opportunity to experience the mission life at Adaikalapuram, one of the earliest mission stations in the second half of regency. He came down to Kerala for his theological formation at Mangalapuza and that matters a lot for his life. Dn Lijo committed perpetually to our Lord in 2013. Dn. John organized himself as a dynamic brother here. We all cherished his life especially his contribution in animating various programmes. His dedication and hard work to make an event successful will really merit our attention. Lijo is known as a computer expert, a techie among us, a vibrant brother. Of course, he is an eloquent preacher in English and in too. His faithfulness to Christ makes his preaching anointed. From his philosophy days, he was the photographer of the seminary, good in editing and video programming. He knows well to use the modern technology in evangelizing and his creative mind will surely serve the demands of the time. It is to be noted with joy that he is a good designer and his effort is seen in many of the invitation cards printed for the ordinations. All these prove him to be a man of his times. He was instrumental in conducting De Paul Quiz in his capacities. Dn. Lijo will be ordained on 28 December at St John Baptist Church, Thuruthipally. Let us pray and wish him all the graces of our Lord in his ministry and accompany him as a brother.

4. Dn. Joseph Poovelil (MM) “One who sings, prays twice” says St. Augustine. Sure, I know a man who prays unceasingly. He is stepping forward to embrace priesthood and to make everybody happy. Surely, he is a blessing and he will be a blessing in his priestly life too. He is none other than Dn. Joseph Poovelil. He was born on 5 Oct. 1988 at Kochera in the diocese of Kanjirappilly as the second of the three children to Mr. Abraham and Mrs. Mariyamma. After his schooling, he recognized the call of the master to work in His vineyard and joined the Vincentian Congregation. He climbed the various rungs of priestly formation from Kalichanadukkam through Bangalore and reached the Vincentian Vidyabhavan, Alwaye to complete his theological studies. He made his first profession on 21 May 2008 and final profession on 19 May 2013. He always keeps a smile in his face and it has given him a wide circle of friends. The community always cherished his vibrant presence. His presence filled the milieu of the community with laughter. The depth of his relationship with God was always reflected in his talks. His melodious voice kept the listeners in ecstasy. His commitment to the works entrusted to his care is worth appreciating and his ability to prepare delicious food gained him the title ‘VB chef’. He has added a spice to the community through his calm and quiet personality. We are sure that he will be doing something great in his future ministry as a priest. We wish him all the best, as he puts his right foot to the Altar of Jesus, the Eternal High Priest, by the hands of Bishop Mar Mathew Vaniakizhakkel on 28-12-2015 at St. Joseph Church, Kochera. We wish you dear Dn Poovelil the best of our prayers and greetings. 5. Dn. Pulickakandathil (Albin) Sebastian (SJ) All birds find shelter during a heavy rain. Nevertheless, eagle avoids rain by flying above the clouds. Dear deacon Albin, as we scrutinize even the simplest fraction of second with you in life, you are like an

55 Family Bond -December 2015

eagle that confronts all the odds with an unwavering confidence and courage. What does it make you a genuine dealer of hope and affection? Clinging onto your memories, caressing your thoughts and cajoling presence, it is explicit that your life on the earth revolves around God with the aid of a firm spiritual convictions that you have fashioned in the good old days. For Albin, everything that happens in life is a great occasion and opportunity to feel the great providence of God and thus striving wholeheartedly to permeate Christ without ceasing. Hence, he draws out his motto as: “By the grace of God I am what I am (1Corinthians 15:10). He is a rare species of a man with his ‘soft touch’ and candid appearance. Dn. Sebastian’s parents Sri Jose P.T and Smt. Gracy Jose are from Udumbannoor Parish of Kothamangalam diocese. He was born on 6th July 1989 in Mankuzhy,Idukky renowned for teak trees and its awesome natural heritage. So he is exceptionally good at agriculture. During the work time, you always see him in the vegetable garden either tilling the land or planting one or the other to grow and bloom. Being an industrious student, he is a voracious reader and an eminent thinker. He has successfully completed his theological studies from Kristhu Jyothi College, Bangalore with excellence. His right wing shots in the volleyball court often leave the hapless opposition in great turmoil and fiasco. Dear deacon Albin, as you are going to be raised to the altar of the Lord, at the hands of most rev. George Punnakottil, Bp-emeritus of Kothamangalam in the morning of 29th Dec. 2015, we wish you zillions of God’s abundant blessings ahead. We thank you for all the times you had been here with us and for us. 6. Dn. Antony (Dibin) Aluvassery (MM) “We all live under the same sky, but we don’t have all the same horizon.” …the flowing waters of river Periyar, the dazzling breeze which carries the tinge of religiosity of Alwaye and the rich socio-cultural practices of Karumalloor widened and deepened the horizon of the

56 Family Bond -December 2015 small boy Dibin, who was born on 28 April 1988 as the only one in the family of Sri. (late) Devassykutty and Smt.Daisy. He grew up as a pious altar boy at Karumalloor in the diocese of Ernakulam- Angamaly. Since his life was the choice of God he was uprooted from his family and was planted in the field of Vincentian Congregation. He joined the minor seminary at ChrituNivas in the year 2004. After a year he moved to Andhra Pradesh for his higher secondary education. Later he made his temporary profession at Kalichanadukkam on 21st May 2018. Further, he acquired his bachelor’s degree from De Paul Institute, Bangalore. His practical training was at Thottakam and he made his final profession at Edapally on 19th May 2013. The last year ofhis formation was at VidhyaBhavan. Being good is important, but being trusted is essential. Dn. Aluvassery’s goodness and trustworthiness is radiated all throughout his life. The blending of his magical voice and his hopping fingers on a keyboard creates symphony. He is also an inborn actor and an amazing orator who can capture the hearts of many. Beyond all these he is a man of deep prayer and an ardent lover of the Vincentian Congregation. He was an indispensable element in all the years of formation because his policy was to give happiness than to take happiness. Commitment and confidence also was his great strength. Dn. Joyal joined the Vincentian Congregation in the year 2004. God had a wonderful plan for him. He did his primary education at Pinakkadami, Andhra Pradesh. His first profession was at Kalichanadukkam on 21st May 2018. He was then moved to De Paul, Bangalore for his graduation. From there he flew higher to Shillong, ‘the abode of clouds,’ the capital and hill station of Meghalaya to do his theological studies. He made his final profession on 28 July 2013. “What you are is God’s gift to you and what you become is your gift to God,” these words are very much applicable to him because all through the years of formation he was a gift to God and was also a gift to others. He spent most of his time for others without neglecting his own responsibilities. He was a master who could change chaos into order through his paintings. His art and paintings are still alive in every heart. His words and his deeds did not contrast with each other. He attracted everybody through his kind words, hard work, humane nature, uncompromising commitment and unceasing prayer. He was a man with a kind heart who practiced the dictum, ‘first be human and then be holy.’ Dear Dn. Joyal Edathazhe, one song can change a moment, one idea can change the world, one step can start a journey…we all wish and pray that the journey you have started may be a blessing for many. 8. Dn. St. Augustine’s Church, Thuravoor. Wish him a graceful ministry with the Lord. 18. Dn. Kurinjikanathil ( Abin) Antony (MM) Believe it or not, we are averse to stepping out of our comfort zones. Our system and culture too encourage us to play safe. However, there is no dearth of positive role models around us, people who have overcome daunting struggles and setbacks to fulfill their life’s purpose. Dear deacon Ibin, this graceful occasion is the right time to cherish the awesome journey that you began from the lofty mountains of Attappadi to the holy altar of the Lord and look back to the good old days to see what you have been to us. Deacon Antony (Abin Kurinjikanam) was born in the year of 1987 in Vayaloor in the district of Palakkad. His first profession was on 21st May 2008 and made final profession on 19th May 2013. If life is a journey dotted with eventful phases, then Ibin is a man of persistence both in its colorful and grey days. A conversation with him will surely leave you with a few whole-hearted laughs for sure. With a gleaming face coupled with a giggle, he is always at the beck and call of others as if he is for others, and in fact it is true. If he is a man of difference with his dashing and impeccable shots in the volley ball court and an ardent lover of ‘ shots’ in the basket ball ground, we cannot simply ignore the singer, artist and a studious student in the person of Ibin. His entire life is encircled on this word of God: ‘Steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the Lord’ (Ps.32, 10). Dear Abin, as you are going to be elevated to the ministerial priesthood of Christ, we pin all our expectation on you with great hope that you can script a successful and faithful of Christ with your life. BIG thanks for what you have been to us and wising you God’s abundant blessings ahead…

Veerpur,U.P. - Bible Convention & Jubilee Celebrations 2015 Eventful and laudable years (1990-2015) of God’s Blessing passed very swiftly through the annals of Vincentian Ashram as well as St. Vincent de Paul Church, Veerpur, Moradabad. Vincentian Ashram and St. Vincent de Paul church had prepared their field for the Silver Jubilee Celebrations from November 8, 2014 to September 27, 2015. The Jubilee year was inaugurated on November 8, 2014 by our Superior General Very Rev. Fr. Varghese Parappuram. The whole year has been engaged in praising and thanksgiving. The Lord’s abiding presence and amazing providence have been felt during these past 25 years. Eventually, on September 25 there commenced a three days Bible convention. It was guided by eminent preachers like Rev. Frs. Bobby Emprayil, Binoy Puthiyedathu and Joby Palatty. It was of course fruitful and inspiring as it took us to a spiritual ecstasy. September 27, 2015 was a red letter day as the Jubilee celebrations commenced with the Holy Eucharist officiated by Rt. Rev. Francis Kalist, the Bishop of Meerut Diocese. Very Rev. Fr. John Kandathinkara the Provincial Superior of St. Thomas Province welcomed the main celebrant and the co-celebrants - some 39 priests including Vincentians, Capuchins and Diocesan priests. During the Jubilee Mass Rev. Fr. Praful Kerkketta narrated a short history of Vincentian presence in the Dioceses of Meerut, Bareilly

68 Family Bond -December 2015 and Agra. During his homily Bishop stressed that the faith which we have received from Christ should be imparted to others through our good witnessing. He also mentioned faith in Jesus Christ does not give the guarantee that the Church will help in every material need of the faithful. One has to stand by the faith and work hard. Discarding the faith when one’s demands are not fulfilled is notChristian life. Real faith consists in practicing the teachings of Jesus Christ. His honeyed words servedenough food for thought during the Jubilee year. In the middle of the Mass we the Vincentians renewed our commitment. More than three thousand people had gathered for the Jubilee Mass. We were privileged and lucky enough to have Rev. Fr. John Kandathinkara, our Provincial Superior and the councilors, Rev. THE HARVEST IS GOOD The number of those awaiting Christ is still immense: the human and cultural groups notyet reached by the Gospel, or for whom the Church is scarcely present, are so widespread as to require the uniting of all the Church’s resources. The whole Church is even more committed to a new missionary advent. We must increase our apostolic zeal to pass on to others the light and joy of the faith, and to this high ideal the whole people of God must be educated. St. John-Paul II. Redemptoris mission, 86
