INTRODUCTION 2017 season is about to begin! Welcome to this year’s directory of approximately 100 listings covering a wide variety of wonderful gardens and nurseries to visit all season. Many gardens will be open on the weekends, and evening openings are on the second and fourth Mondays of June, July, August, and September. The Directory has been prepared by a dedicated committee led by Chair Tom Barreto, assisted by Ruth Clark, Merle Dole-Reid, Jenn Ferrante, Barry Gates, Jim Rondone, Pam Skalicky, Lise Storc, and Bruce Wakefield. Tom is also much appreciated for his beautiful photography which graces the cover this year and to Merle Dole-Reid’s photograph on this page. Special thanks to Linda Wisner for cover design, advice and production direction, and a very big thank you to Bruce Wakefield for his help with a process that is always time consuming; we are very grateful. We have worked hard to assure the accuracy of the listings in the 2017 the Open Gardens Directory, but if you find an error or omission, please contact the HPSO office at 503-224-5718. Corrections will be announced in the HPSO weekly email blasts. New this year, you can now open your garden more spontaneously if your garden looks fantastic that week by sending a message to Bruce at [email protected]. He will redirect you to an Open Garden Committee member who can help you with a garden description and get your notice out in the weekly email to the rest of HPSO. And most importantly, our deepest thanks to the generous and welcoming HPSO members who are sharing their gardens this year. We appreciate the opportunity to learn from, and enjoy, your remarkable gardens.

VISITOR GUIDELINES TO GOOD GARDEN ETIQUETTE

We are fortunate to be able to visit so many glorious gardens through our HPSO membership. Since we want to keep getting invited back, here are a few reminders about how to be the very best garden visitor ever.

1. Ask the garden owner before taking photos. Almost everyone will say yes. Ask separately about the use of tripods. 2. Stay on footpaths, stairways and bridges. This will ensure that you are not compromising beds, slopes, or waterways, and that you will keep your footing. 3. Leave plant tags in the ground or the pot where the plant is located. Ask your host to identify plants if you cannot read the tags in place. 4. If you do ask the name of a plant, make sure you have a notebook and pencil at the ready to record it. You may think you will remember, but you won’t; none of us remembers. 5. If there are other visitors during your tour, make sure everyone has access to the host to ask questions. 6. Refrain from removing any plants (even weeds) or parts of plants. 7. If the house is not open, please do not ask to use the bathroom/phone/ unless it is a dire emergency. 8. Have a wonderful time.

We hope you'll join us for the second annual HPSO potluck Volunteer Picnic. We hugely appreciate your hard work throughout the year and would like to thank you with a bee-buzzingly, sun-flowery day in the country with new and old friends. Bring your favorite beverage and picnic offering and breathe in the fresh country air. Spouses, offspring and grannies welcome! Dogs, too!

There are seating areas throughout the garden, but if you want to picnic in the sun we suggest you bring a blanket or throw.

We've had fun transforming our small but mighty urban garden with a woodland feel into a designer's lushly-planted bird-lover's paradise. Secluded behind the mixed habitat hedgerow in front, choice native cultivars are featured along with cool Chilean specimens and other ornamental and useful plants. A friend described our place as a quiet and peaceful oasis at the end of a short street in a popular, active neighborhood in SE Portland near Reed College. You are welcome to visit. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, but only a small part of it

Directions: From the west side, head east on the Bridge. Turn right on 17th, left on Holgate, right on 28th, left on Steele, and right on SE 38th (a dead-end block). Proceed south 1 block. We are the last house (teal- colored) on the right in the cul-de-sac.

Campiello Maurizio Located at the base of Mt. Tabor, Campiello Maurizio is our small garden space behind the house where we drink coffee, entertain guests, and lounge beneath the large living willow arbor I created over 10 years ago. Due to our shared heritage, there is an Italian feel to the garden, but that's not all that you'll encounter here. The rest of the garden is modest and bohemian. I'm a 25 plant collector, propagator, and lover of plants so there is a hodgepodge in this city garden. The garden is far from being established at this point. There is a xeric area, two shade gardens beneath mature Doug firs, a propagation area, as well as the graveled living area out back. Wheelchair accessibility: No

Directions: We're easy to find. From downtown take Burnside and drive east, making sure to stay in the left lane as you near the north side of Mt. Tabor. If you miss where Burnside splits and becomes Thorburn simply turn left onto 72nd Ave. If you stay on Burnside, turn right onto 72nd Ave. We're the second house in from the street and we have a large Douglas fir out front. Since our street is narrow, it may be easier to park along Burnside. If you hit 82nd Ave. you've gone too far. Our house is located in the NE corner of the Mt. Tabor neighborhood.

If I were to give my garden a name, it would be Barbara's Playground. It's my favorite place to spend time in every day. There I plant, prune, and putter, always trying out new varieties of flowering perennials and shrubs, and dream up different ways to combine them with each other. Now thirty years old, the garden sits on an acre that feels bigger, thanks to the borrowed landscape beyond. Features include island beds, mixed borders, container plantings, a collection of dwarf conifers and dwarf ginkgoes, a redwood greenhouse, grape arbor and an eagle stone patio framed by a pergola. https://loveletterstomygarden.wordpress.com Wheelchair accessibility: No

Ten Thousand Blessings We pack a lot into our small urban space. Borders of shrub roses and drought-tolerant plants fill the hellstrip, while an exuberant mixed border lines the driveway. The grass has been replaced, a zigzag pathway in front leads you on. In the back, a copper fence and glass art lead to the first of several rooms. Dozens of potted shrubs create privacy, and the sound of water permeates the area. The next room is bordered by blueberries and grapes, and includes a small pond and increasingly, bonsai and an Asian feel. Glass art and copper structures enliven the spaces. At the rear is a shade garden under apricot and apple trees, which evolved from a wild cottage feel to a of Chinese plants (anything of the species delavayi). A bonsai work area completes the space, but the vegetable bed may not survive neighboring construction. This is a small-scale garden, but with many surprises. Our two-acre garden was a slope of invasive weeds when we purchased the property in 2000. After living with all the scotch broom, ivy and vinca, we decided it was time for a MAJOR backyard remodel in 2003. Landscape architect Michael Schultz created a beautiful design that pulled the house and the garden together, taming the slope with a number of terraces for entertaining and a much better connection to the garden. Mature evergreen trees, 50-year-old rhododendrons, an eight-bed raised vegetable garden and plenty of year-round color make up this collector's garden. The best time to visit the garden is in May, June, late July or August. The house was completely remodeled and a new front patio courtyard designed by Laura Crockett, the Garden Diva, was added in July, 2015. Please wear comfortable shoes. Wheelchair accessibility: No

Directions: Follow W. Burnside west into the hills. At the top of W. Burnside at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, stay to the right on NW Skyline Blvd and go approximately 1 mile. Count the speed bumps on NW Skyline Blvd and immediately after the 4th speed bump park in the cobblestone pullout on the left side of the road next to the mailbox and under the wisteria. Plant Passion Garden This backyard garden features clean, strong geometric lines defining distinct outdoor rooms. The garden blends tropical, contemporary and Northwest styles. Garden spaces are connected by paths of flint gravel lined with borders of polished river rock. A rustic stone sitting wall surrounds the patio area and defines a backdrop rich in texture, color and fragrance. Modern steel planters line the flagstone porch and steps leading to the house. A steel deco trellis provides the backdrop for a large planted container creating a key focal point in the garden. Bold foliage choices artfully arranged suggest the South American tropics of the design's native home. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, or most of it

My garden is on the typical 100'x100' lot. I've maintained an American Hemerocallis Society Display Garden for 10 years. I grow about 200 different vareties of daylilies, plus peonies, hellebores, hostas, old-fashioned calla lilies, astilbe, oriental lilies, fuchsia, hydrangea, clematis, iris, and others. I love garden art and have collected fun things to draw interest into the beds. My Weeping Blue 29 Atlas Cedar is the centerpiece by the entryway with a small water feature. The original magnolia is still growing strong. I've added a Sundance Magnolia, white paperbark birch, two crepe myrtles and a sunset maple to replace old stately trees lost to disease and storms. The garden is alive with vibrant color and lovely fragrance all summer. There are shady places to sit and relax, with hummers for entertainment. Not big enough to wear you out, but just to have fun and take in the bursts of color. Something is flowering 3 seasons, and I garden for eye candy! Come and enjoy! Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, or most of it

Directions: Heading north on I-5, take Exit 3, turn right on Minnehaha/63rd, which is the second light. I will block out my front parking strip so that everyone can see the flowers from both sides of the sidewalk.

Interspersed with the traditional cottage plantings are native planting groups in different settings. These settings include a native plant woodland walk, a sunny native plant mixed meadow, shrub and tree area, and a small wetland pond space which hosts native invertebrates and floating humans alike. We are purposefully creating a wildlife garden at Homestead Cottage within the traditional garden style framework in order to demonstrate how native plants and wildlife gardening can be integrated into traditional settings. We have been in this location for nearly 30 years, and were fortunate to begin our gardening with a number of large heritage trees that we built the rest of the garden around. Ken was the gardener at the Bishop's Close before we moved here, and some of our treasured plants began their lives as seedlings that needed to be weeded out there. The site is nearly a 1/2 acre with a mix of meadow-type lawn and shrub beds. Even after 29 years, it's a work in progress! Wheelchair accessibility: No

Directions: It's easiest to take I-5 south to the Multnomah exit. You'll be headed west and the streets are numbered. At SW 35th you'll come across the second light; turn to the right (north). There are a series of stop signs in Multnomah Village, proceed straight through and continue north over a series of hills until you come to a stop sign at SW Vermont. Turn left (west) and we are the second house on the right side. You'll know us by our hub cap collection along the retaining wall. Parking in front is limited but there is a church parking lot just a couple hundred feet further west on the same side of Vermont Street.

River Forest Garden My plan is to make some major changes in the garden this year. We suffered severe damage from this winter's storms. So I am only open one day though I am happy to have you make an appointment to see the work in progress. Our acre on the Willamette is long and narrow with a driveway winding through. It is a sunny spot in the middle of a beautiful Douglas fir forest. The gardens were built over the past ten years, defining structure with shrubs and adding a perennial tapestry of textures and colors. The most challenging area to garden is the slope to the river on the west side of the property, with its stairway, lower patio and terracing. Sedums and grasses dominate this very dry landscape. I am a potter, hand-built stoneware for both home and garden. My garden inspires my art, my work informs the garden's plants and spaces. My studio stands in the middle of the property and is open on open garden dates and by appointment. See my work and garden at www.greenwarepottery.com. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, but only a small part of it

Directions: We are in the Oak Grove neighborhood, between Oregon City and Milwaukie - just south of Portland on the east side of the Willamette. Take 99E north or south. Turn west on Oak Grove Blvd. Turn left on River Road. First true right (not a dead end) is SE River Forest Road. Turn right onto River Forest Rd. and follow the road, bearing right at the 'Y'. 1130 is the 7th driveway on the left. We are on a flag lot. Drive into the property and park 32 along the outer driveway or in front of the 3 car garage on your left as you pass the gate.

Petals & Stems Moving out of the shadow of Forest Park eleven years ago, I found a rare, sunny, tree-less lot in Irvington. Five months later, the scraggly grass and puny rhodies had a close encounter of the bulldozer kind. David Mason (formerly Hedgerows Nursery) helped me make a plan for the sloped front yard, to include a rock garden, a dry creek and a small bridge. Initially, I planted lots of rocks and boulders, but all those sun-loving plants I could never have before soon followed. The next summer, the parking strip became a garden. Next I sold the lawn mower after plants filled the back yard as well. Ironically, I missed the shade plants I'd left behind, so a woodland garden emerged under the borrowed shade of birches. I then moved on to the driveway (who says you need to put a car there.) The container-based garden has a pergola at the back making a great patio. I look forward to sharing the garden again this summer. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, or most of it

Directions: From I-5 take exit 302A (Rose Quarter/ Broadway/Weidler). Go East on Weidler to NE 15th Ave. Turn left onto 15th and go 10 blocks to NE Klickitat. Turn Right and go three blocks to NE 18th. Turn left and go nearly to Fremont. The house is on the left.

From I-405 cross over the Fremont Bridge staying in the right lane. Take Kirby Ave. exit. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp. Go straight for two blocks to NE Williams. Turn left onto Williams. Turn right onto Fremont. Go to NE 18th Ave. and turn right. House will be third on the right.

33 Our three acre garden is now seventeen years old, although it seems more mature thanks to eight enormous walnut trees. The trees are remnants of a one-time orchard and give the property a park-like feel. Evergreens around the perimeter provide privacy and a great backdrop while still allowing plenty of sun. Over the years we've created many ornamental beds, in both sun and shade. Paving stone pathways tie it all together and Gary's metal art adds personality. I love the peaceful feel of the wide open spaces paired with spacious beds. A large vegetable garden surrounded by decorative fencing and arbors contains several raised beds, asparagus, grapes and blackberries. The latest addition is a new front walk and patio. Of course the garden is never done, and the current construction zone is along the driveway where we lost some trees in the winter storms. Open on the same day as the nearby Skalicky garden, as well as several other Clark County gardens. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, or most of it

Directions: North on I- 5 to Exit #7 / NE 134th St. (Or North on I-205 to Exit #36 / NE 134th St, WSU Vancouver). The Social Garden Our desire to stay in Oregon City led to a perhaps foolish decision to buy 1 1/2 acres of rock left behind by the Missoula floods. The property nestles at the base of a basalt bluff surrounded by big-leaf maple and Douglas fir. Creating a garden in such difficult terrain became my life's adventure. Today gravel paths, cozy seating areas, metal art, mixed borders, Ben Dye's steel fence, Marcia Donahue and Jean Chapin's ceramic art, beautiful stone work and a sense of humor have transformed the dramatic setting into a peaceful garden. Our three year stone project is now finished and waiting to be enjoyed. I treasure visitors taking the time to sit awhile and soak up the ancient and peaceful energy of this garden. Bring a cup of coffee and enjoy 34 homemade biscotti. The garden has been open on Mother's Day for two years. It was so much fun that I'm doing it again. Appointments welcomed. Fellow Gardeners! Take the short trip north to Kelso to see what we've been up to. While you plan your Saturday excursion, include the two other Kelso gardens to round out your day. During your visit to our log home and gardens you will be greeted by our three llamas. When we moved here 18 years ago there were only a few orchard trees, some blueberry plants and lots of grass. Since then we have created walkways, a grape arbor, large vegetable garden with raised beds, and planted peach, pear and cherry trees. We have a berry patch with blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and marionberries. We have added decks, a pergola, an herb garden and many garden beds bursting with perennials. I've lost count of our many dahlia varieties but I'm sure they will be in all their glory for you to see. We hope you'll come enjoy our beautiful country setting on four acres and our gardens, and relax on the deck overlooking the Coweeman River with some bites and beverages. Our garden has two distinct personalities with one common goal. One personality is lush, soft and shady while the second personality is hot, dry and spiky. Both serve to expand indoor living space into outdoor areas with a focus on entertaining. The shady front garden is a space to get out of the sun and appreciate the lush plantings including grasses, hydrangeas, bletilla, hellebores, conifers and a collection of 30-plus varieties of hostas. The back garden is a place to soak up the sun in an architectural space featuring a collection of over 40 varieties of agave, cactus, succulents and a small orchard of olive trees. Entertaining spaces include a courtyard with a fireplace, numerous dining areas and an outdoor living room with emphasis on beautiful, colorful furniture, outdoor textiles and great lighting for the evening. My 5 year old "country garden in the city" surrounds an 1897 farmhouse (a Sears and Roebuck kit house). After many years working on the house, I turned to the garden. Set on the remaining terraced acre of a former 40 acre fruit orchard, the hardscape was designed by landscape architect Steven Koch. It features a stone pathway planted with thyme, a bluestone courtyard, dry stacked stone walls, staircases and a gravel terrace. The 37 garden has a walled vegetable garden with water feature, an herb garden, a native plant meadow with bee boxes, and a splendid old Camperdown Elm brought from England and planted at the edge of his land grant by Captain Hewitt. In April, featured plants are camellia, magnolia, dogwood, erythronium, pulmonaria, corylopsis. In May, there are allium, lilacs, iris, penstemon, lewisia. The meadow blooms with camas, buttercups, lupine. Wood chip sloping paths surround the meadow - wear comfortable shoes. Wheelchair accessibility: No

My 15 year old organic garden is on a 75x100 city lot. I'm not a planner, so plants came home, beds grew and lawn disappeared until I thought it was set. Then I started changing it. Trees died and grew, changing the light. Trees added over the years include Trochodendron, Cornus controversa 'Variegata', Acer griseum, Betula x 'Royal Frost' and Davidia sonoma. I'm also moving a few larger shrubs and small trees and am working on parts of the yard that need better composition. My front, south-facing garden blooms most of the year. It is terraced with basalt and shrubs for structure and privacy. The back is a private space to relax in light shade with garden art. Evergreens and foliage color/texture are the focus, but many epimediums, podophyllum, disporum, hellebores, tricyrtis, etc. have followed me home, too. There is a covered patio and a large deck. You are invited to sit and enjoy. The Lewis and Evans gardens directly across the street are also open. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, or most of it

Do you enjoy gardens with rare, exotic and tender plants? Me too, but you won't find them here. This is a garden where only the strong survive. Nineteen years ago this 3+ acre garden was mostly junipers, diseased photinia, and fir trees. Some of this had to go! We've added beds and borders. There is a variety of beautiful trees, shrubs, and perennials. The garden is bird, bee and butterfly friendly with native and non-native plants. There is a deer proof vegetable garden. Some garden art is scattered about. Reclaiming part of the woods from blackberries and weeds is ongoing. Friends tell me the overall effect is park-like and peaceful. We would love to see you. On the July dates, enjoy 3 country gardens as gardens of Meredith Hilderbrand and Beth Hansen-Winter are also open. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, but only a small part of it

The Dietrich Garden This Michael Schultz-designed garden encompassing one-and-one-half acres is 6 years old. The transition from an excess of rolling green lawn to the present setting of "colorful rooms" containing many different perennials, flowering trees and ornamental grasses has been tedious, but certainly enjoyable. Add a few arbors, three water features, interesting hardscapes, plus a mix of tropicals, and the visitor should leave my garden with a sense of tranquility and an appreciation for the beauty Portland's climate can nurture." That was written 11 years ago for the Garden Conservancy Tour 39 and much has changed! True to Michael's original plan, the woodland has been completed and a succulent bed enters its sixth summer season. I invite all of you to come share in the beauty of summer days in Cedar Mill. This is a small urban garden in the Mt. Tabor neighborhood. Part of the garden is in shade, and most of the native plants I grow are in the shade garden. The parking strip is a no-fertilizer and no-irrigation collection of drought tolerant plants, including several dwarf Ceanothus. In the sunny parts of the garden, I have raised vegetable beds and I like to grow colorful heirloom vegetables. I also have many hanging baskets displayed around the garden. The bird feeders bring in many birds. There are also garden art pieces, both funky items from thrift stores and pieces from local artists. This garden is now certified as backyard habitat. Garden on the Green Hooray! My wonderful neighbors are opening their gardens again this year, so I will too! My garden sits above Rose City Golf Course, which provides a wonderful "green" backdrop to my garden. NEW this year is a cover on the upper deck, changing my view of the garden and giving "relief" shade from a strong southern exposure to me and my potted trees. The perennial favorite at my annual open garden is the garden art - including my husband's 1/3 scale replica of a Curtis Bi-Plane! It's been a wild winter and I have no idea how much storm damage I will have. This is my sixth year in a "revamped" landscape - things have grown and I am convinced I need to make changes soon. 42 My shade garden is situated on a steep hillside in NW Portland. Many of my plants were collected from Heronswood in the late 1990's offering some unusual varieties of trilliums, toad lilies, hellebores, a wide variety of ferns including two varieties of tree ferns, epimediums, camellias and much more. Even though our lot is a standard 50x100 foot lot, being on such a steep slope has offered me a larger planting space with different moisture and light conditions. Two years ago a good sized Red Japanese Maple died adding another structural feature to my back garden area and adding some light. I have rustic paths throughout the garden for those wishing to explore the slopes. There are 50 stairs from the street to the front door so be ready to climb. Wheelchair accessibility: No

The front garden is almost full sun. In the late afternoon it is shaded by the large birch tree growing in the northwest corner of the garden. This garden has two gravel gardens, the parking strip and driveway strip. The back garden consists of a sun garden and a shade garden. My salvia collection includes species from Europe and Asia, which are the hardiest salvias. The species from South America, Central America and include both hardy and tender species. Many of these are woody salvias or shrub forming species. These are the real stars of the garden when in bloom with some species blooming from summer until frost. If you like hummingbirds (and who doesn't?), then come on out and enjoy the show those feisty little hummingbirds put on for us. Two new additions to the garden last year were Leonotis ocymifolia and Leonotis nepetifolia. L.nepetifolia was a hit proudly standing out at 9-8 feet tall in the garden. I plan to have plants available during the June open garden dates. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, but only a small part of it

Ice and snow so damaged our birch trees they have been removed. We are using this opportunity to level those awkward mounds, which involves moving a dogwood tree! We will also plant a new tree in that space—a ginkgo perhaps? If I close my eyes, I can see a profusion of blooms this spring; fragrant roses, gorgeous clematis, spiky delphiniums, hydrangeas dripping blossoms, and perennials of every description, plus flowering shrubs, conifers, and deciduous trees. We have received several awards from the Royal Rosarians for our mixture of roses with other garden plants. Pete made the arbors, plus my green-roofed bird feeder, a blue bottle tree, and a cattle-fence trellis covered with porcelainberry vine. Our daughter made the tumbled glass stepping stones that dot our Greystone pathways. Our garden is 18 years old now and has been a great source of comfort and peace in a difficult year. Snow Cottage Garden While only 15 minutes from downtown Portland, our 2/3-acre garden is a country retreat surrounded by tall hedges and ancient trees. It was first established in 1906 when our home was built. We have retained some of the original design while adding our own ideas with new beds, architectural spaces and a vegetable garden bordered by espaliered fruit trees. Inspired by visits to friends' gardens in our native England, the beds are layered for year- round color with bulbs, perennials, variegated shrubs, roses and boxwoods. Following the sudden death of a huge and beautiful Sweet Gum tree last year, our lower garden has been redesigned, with the assistance of Lucy Hardiman, to be a park-like setting with trees shrubs and grasses that change color throughout the year. This 1/4 acre garden is 10 years in the making. After removal of several invasive plants and outdated foundation shrubs, we installed extensive new beds, gravel paths and a potager kitchen garden. Planting emphasis focuses on cold hardy Mediterranean plants and prairie perennials in a naturalistic style. The backyard slope is a tapestry of hardy perennials with drifts of ornamental grasses. Hardy shrubs include several Arctostaphylos, Bupleurum fruticosum, Ceanothus, lots of Cotinus, Hydrangea quercifolia, Melianthus, and Rosa glauca. Pots are full of succulents and spikey plants that winter- over in the garage. The lawn is a drought tolerant blend of fescues that requires little to no mowing. Outside dining takes place on the front terrace behind a modern slat fence and the back patio is reserved for relaxing with a repurposed prison bed. Wheelchair accessibility: No

Garden of Evermore Our rural acreage came with a jungle of native trees and plants that we have blended with our favorite cultivars over 30 years. We have worked with the contours of our property to create a hillside garden featuring different plant zones guided by sun exposure. Interspersed along our paths you will find paper bark and Japanese maple, parrotia, stewartia, dogwood, rhododendrons, kalmias and native trees. To compliment the foundation plants we have an eclectic collection of sun and shade loving perennials. A fenced area (the vegetable gulag) protects our edibles from the resident deer. Year round color, texture and interest are the features we strive for in the garden. We welcome you to visit our garden! Wheelchair accessibility: No

Capricornucopia Explore the world in a single city lot through the plants in a 15-year-old garden. Find a collector's garden with emphasis on Southern Hemisphere natives - Chilean eucryphias and azaras, South African perennials, hardy New Zealand hebes and an Australian snow gum. This gave rise to the garden's name (an allusion to the Tropic of Capricorn and the abundance of plants from south of there). This garden is a standard city lot in the Sunnyside neighborhood. As I've been a potter in Portland for forty years, the garden is full of planters, tile installations, architectural ornaments and sculpture. As do many city gardens, I have an urban canyon and a solution: Japanese Meadows Rue, Thalictrum rochebruneanum, an eight foot plant with a delicate leaf similar to columbine. It produces a large mass of tiny mauve florets at eye level that occupy the shade beneath viburnums, climbing roses and clematis 49 from May through August. And it doesn't lean into the sun! Other features: "Rhinoceros of Venice" mosaic and Celtic knot garden lettuce parterre. Wheelchair accessibility: No

Directions: In the Sunnyside neighborhood between Belmont and Hawthorne. Eight steps from the street to the garden.

I've never been good at moderation. I admit it. But when it comes to my garden, I'm completely out of control. Somehow there are always new plants, new ideas, new joy. A few years ago I started planting along our 750- foot driveway; it now sports over 100 trees and shrubs. In the last four years, I've created five new gardens in the pasture and last fall expanded two of the existing ones to nearly double their original size. The collections continue to multiply--succulents and agaves, maples, hostas, hydrangeas, species rhododendrons, conifers--and the garden ornaments proliferate without my even trying: mossy old concrete pots, benches, finials, urns, fountains, bird baths, balls, pedestals, and statuary; iron sculptures; wrought-iron gates; a bronze goat-head urn; antique Mexican gargoyles. It's an addiction. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, but only a small part of it

Joy Creek Nursery Extensive display gardens showcase most of the plants that you will find for sale. We plant for beauty but also to test a plant's efficacy for our climate. If it shows signs of unruly tendencies, we will ban it from our sales tables. The garden is 25 years young and always evolving. A stroll along the paths will show you something different in every season and make it easy to see what that 4" pot or small shrub might amount to in time. Strong on hydrangeas, fuchsias, clematis and penstemons, we've never met an interesting plant that we didn't want to grow. You will always receive a warm welcome here. On weekends, we up the ante with coffee and homemade chocolate chip cookies in the barn. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, or most of it

61 Directions: From downtown Portland, take US 30 (St Helens Hwy) to the outskirts of Scappoose. Watch for the blue highway signs announcing Joy Creek Nursery. Turn left on Watson Rd and wind uphill for about a mile. The nursery will be on your left. Limited parking next to the barn, overflow parking further up Watson Rd on the right (when a sign is out at the entrance to the nursery).

After decades gardening in Portland, we started a garden at our part-time home on the Oregon coast in 2011. Who knew that gardening 90 miles away could be so different!? With the Pacific Ocean 900 feet to the west and the coast range mountains looming 20 feet behind to the east, challenges abound: salt-spray, wild winds, elk herd depredations along with rainfall amounts that would amaze even moisture-soaked Portlanders (80+ inches annually). Add in not being there every day to cosset plants and it becomes even more exciting. New plants: Crinodendron hookerianum, Griselinia littoralis 'Variegata', Azara microphylla, Drimys winteri, Raphiolepis, Eucryphia 'Nymansay', etc. Come see what six years of experimentation can yield near the wilds of the wind-lashed ocean! Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, but only a small part of it

Directions: Arch Cape is between Cannon Beach and Manzanita. From the Willamette Valley take either Rt. 26 or Rt. 6 west to Rt. 101. From the Rt. 26 and 101 junction, go south about 10 miles. Our house is the first house south of the Catholic Church on the left (East) side of Hwy 101. The driveway is directly across from Montbrecia Ave. If taking Rt. 6 to Rt. 101, once you reach 101 in Tillamook, go north on 101 about 35 miles to Arch Cape. Our house will be a sharp turn to the right, directly across from Montbrecia Ave.

After this winter it is difficult to know what will be displayed in our garden in June but we are fairly certain it will be worth sharing. There will be reshaping and replanting in some of the "rooms" of our cottage style garden. Necessity dictates pruning and cutting back in some areas which will require us to rethink our choices and perhaps enjoy the opportunity to replant..or replace. So, there will be surprises this year for all. If you have visited us before, this is an invitation to revisit and see the changes. If you have never seen our shaded specimens of arisaema, podophyllum, epimedium, astilbe, heuchera, aucuba rozannie and himalaica, acer japonica and ginkgo, it is an opportunity to explore new territory. We also have a sunny slope of mostly Northwest natives. Several neighbors also have open gardens so you can experience multiple gardens at one stop. Wheelchair accessibility: No

Directions: Travel on Sandy Blvd. to 72nd Ave. Turn right if coming from the west or turn left if coming from the east. My garden is my passion. I started with a clean slate four years ago designing and shaping the beds, placing the trees to give privacy and shade where needed, and installing a small water feature for interest. Shrubs provide color and texture year round with an understory of primroses, hostas, hellebores, grasses and many ground covers. Annuals give splashes of color. Garden art is used minimally. Arrangements of potted plants decorate the patio. Fruit trees, blueberry bushes and raspberries are at one side of the yard. Come and enjoy coffee & cookies! Our cottage garden is designed for pollinators, birds, and year-round interest. There are multiple spaces in the garden, each with its own personality. The front yard is a mix of trees, shrubs, and flowers that put on a boisterous display of flowering and scent throughout the spring and summer. A diversity of organically grown fruiting trees and shrubs produce incredible flavor in the summer and fall, while herbs offer delightful scents. The shady backyard features mature trees under-planted with native plants and a small pond, providing a haven for birds, frogs, and other wildlife. The nearby Campbell pollinator-friendly garden will also be open this day. Wheelchair accessibility: No

65 Matsu Kaze (Wind in the Pines) Our garden has slowly evolved over the last 14 years. As with many country properties, it has a conifer-lined perimeter. This Northwest style garden has an Asian influence and is filled with rare and unusual plants, predominantly conifers of all varieties, colors and shapes, ginkgos, dogwoods and Japanese maples. Many plants in our garden are contorted or weeping. But my plant addiction also includes a collection of lilies, peonies, clematis, daphnes, rhododendrons and other shrubs and perennials. Meandering pathways lead to a pond with a waterfall, a covered bridge over a dry creek bed, a fire pit area with boulders for seating, several woodland walks, an outdoor kitchen and a guest house. The informality of this garden evokes a feeling of relaxation and welcomes everyone who enters. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, or most of it

Directions: From 205 N - Take Exit 32, the Padden Parkway exit, and head east. At the 2nd light turn left onto 117th Avenue (also known as Hwy. 503). Once you are on 131st go a country block and turn left onto 110th Avenue. 110th takes a jog to the right and then a jog to the left which turns into 109th. Ours is a contemplative, woodland garden. The goal of my design was to provide a space for relaxation and meditation. There is a 4,000-gallon pond with fish and a meandering stream that provides soothing sounds of flowing water as you stroll the walkway. There is seating throughout the garden in both sun and shade. My emphasis in this garden is more on foliage than flower. I do have a sun garden with many perennials for color and the lawn is bounded by many rhododendrons. The property in front is shaded by large Douglas fir. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, or most of it

The Mitchell Garden Our large corner lot has become our private garden paradise, a labor of love that is always under revision (of course). Today in the back yard garden, 67 there are two brick patios for entertaining, multiple trellises covered with hops (used by the resident home brewer), and many stone paths created for exploration by our grandchildren and border collie. A truly lush Northwest garden, we celebrate our big Douglas firs that keep us continually experimenting with plants for shade. Mature conifers unify one garden room with the next. At the lower southwest end of the back garden and in the large garden surrounding the front of the property, sunny perennial beds show off many favorites that bloom from early spring through late summer. The edible garden includes raspberry vines, blueberry bushes and a rich, sunny bed for tomatoes. Our garden was featured on the Garden Conservancy/HPSO tour in August, 2015. Overlooking the Stephen's Creek natural area, our 5200 sq ft garden is about 6 years old. With a combination of sun and shade, the garden wraps around the house to a terraced slope above a natural area of big leaf maples. Various clematis weave their way up into small magnolias, Japanese maples, and arbors with climbing roses. The lowest terrace is planted with espaliered apple trees, bamboo and canna. On the slope leading down to Stephen's Creek are a variety of New Zealand, Australian and species. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, but only a small part of it

Beautiful, mature red cedars and a few big leaf maples surround our 5 acres in Hockinson. The drive to the house has lovely rock walls that are the home to a collection of sedums. Adjacent to the walls are mature plantings: dogwoods, willows, hydrangeas, Japanese maples, lilacs, clematis, and viburnum. When this became our home 8 years ago we began to add a number of new beds. The emphasis has been to plant low maintenance plants that will complement the existing landscaping and not be too tempting to the resident deer and rabbits. Now a long shade garden edges one side of the property with numerous hostas, ferns, hardy fuchsias, heuchera, pulmonaria, hydrangeas, Japanese maples and other interesting 70 shrubs. A nice collection of conifers, heaths and heathers, ornamental grasses and Japanese maples is to be found in a number of sun beds. The south-facing rose garden has been replaced by conifers and Japanese maples —the deer and rabbits won! There are a few interesting pieces of whimsical garden art. A nice-sized vegetable garden and numerous containers provide us with fresh produce. Come enjoy a stroll through our little piece of paradise. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, or most of it

The Jane Kerr Platt Garden The Platt Garden was started from scratch in the 1940's by John and Jane Kerr Platt. This garden, originally an apple and cherry orchard, is known for its collection of rhododendrons, a genus championed by the late Mrs. Platt and currently by her son, David. The garden is known both as a collector's garden and for its ability to display specimens with an eye to the combination of color, texture and size. After nearly 80 years, many of the older specimens can be seen in their fully mature form. And for lovers of smaller treasures, Mr. and Mrs. Platt created the rock garden, using large rocks from the remnants of an abandoned quarry near Mt. Hood. Also enjoy the Pietro Belluschi-designed home nestled into this wonderful setting. Be aware that the garden has gravel and chip paths, steps, and a long uphill walk. Springdale Gardens Gardens merely 3-and 4-years young rise from the grassy areas where boys once kicked their balls and dogs chased their boys. It is astounding how quickly plants can grow in the mild maritime climate, rich soils and abundant rainfalls that bless the West Columbia River Gorge! Under the watchful eye of garden designer Elaine Hutson, Karen continues to frantically plant the pots lining her driveway and mulch the bare beds and pathways in this one- acre landscape. Much of the creek is planted, but the pond-weeds are everywhere! Will all the pots be planted, the empty pots be hidden, the paths and beds be mulched, the tires and car parts be moved in time for the tour?? If not, friends, I know you'll understand...right? My happy place is how I think of my garden. Even though it is small and ever- changing, it is my haven. It is a garden we enjoy living in whether simply taking our daily 'walk about' or visiting with friends in the family room by the pond, in the more formal dining room area or having a fireside chat after dinner. It started out as primarily a shade garden where hellebores, hostas and ferns predominated and still do. But there have been many changes as the sun and shade patterns evolve along with our interests. The winter storms the last few years have taken their toll on some of our trees. The bad news about this is that we've lost some of our privacy, but the good news is that sun lovers are slowly being introduced plus my husband is thrilled to have a raised bed veggie garden. Yes, our garden has evolved from a haven for chickens and exotic pheasants to a shady retreat to one yet to be determined and that is a good thing. A garden is never 'done' and who would want it to be?! Also open the same day is the nearby garden of Ruth and Gary Clark, as well as several other Clark County gardens. 76 My garden is a bit old-fashioned and always in transition. It is at its peak in June with irises, roses, oriental poppies, and more. It's a typical suburban lot but I have tried to transform it into a cottage garden. There is also a small vegetable garden as part of the madness. I am not much on design, but I like color and my garden reflects that. The garden is also all organic. There have been no pesticides used in this garden for over 15 years. Morthanweekanchu Our large garden is a sloped clearing surrounded by forest. We strive to provide wildlife habitat and harmonize with our surroundings while including a wide variety of edible and ornamental plants. Low-water sections of the garden include the usual, and some unusual, sun-loving perennials, trees, and shrubs. The moist woodland features the witch-hazel family, conifers, and natives. Containers include a mature Sollya heterophylla. There are twenty varieties of hebe, so we must like them. We've used logs, timbers, rocks, blocks, and tree rings to manage slopes. Recent changes include rock gardens, beds featuring natives and edibles, more paths and stairs, and expansion of the raised bed potager. Paths are sloped with no handrails, so sure-footedness is a plus. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, but only a small part of it

Our grounds are developing slowly. Sloping down from the gate, we have 3 acres which used to be cow pasture, poorly graded and uneven (wear sensible shoes). The upper acre's beds have been mostly planted. The middle acre has been roughly laid out and planting has begun. The lowest acre, bordered by a creek, will probably remain wild. Near the house we have a sunny perennial border and last year began a small veggie garden. I want

78 most of our property to be a woodland garden, but don't yet have much shade. Temporary protection for my treasures comes from pallets, shade cloth, lattice, etc. We have over 100 different rhododendrons, lots of ferns, hellebores, daffodils, crocosmia, dahlias, fuchsias, and interesting trees (oxydendron, stewartia, lace bark pine, 'Esk Sunset' maple, star magnolia, dogwoods) along with natives. The Hodges & Craven gardens, also in Kelso, are open today. Wheelchair accessibility: No

For over 30 years we have gardened on our 1.76 acre property which backs up to the Tualatin River. The main focus around the house is over 200 clematis, fuchsias, hydrangeas, peonies, hellebores and poppies. There is an eye-popping 100-foot front border full of perennials. The structure of the garden beds is enhanced by the use of evergreen trees, shrubs and Chinese- red trellises. A large collection of fruit trees which includes apples, pears, Asian pears and plums. We also grow grapes, ever-bearing raspberries and have a large vegetable garden. The garden is now entering its 20th season. Plants spill onto the street and create a screen that encloses the front garden. Large pots turn the driveway into a garden tapestry. In spring ribes, ceanothus, corylopsis, chaenomeles, viburnum and fothergilla explode with color and fragrance. The fresh new foliage can be copper, red, blue and gold. As you walk through the garden notice the contrast in color, shape and texture of the ferns, grasses and perennials like ligularia and rue that tie the garden together. The back garden is an oasis. Tall trees filter the hot sun. The shady borders feature huge cornus kousa, Hydrangea 'Sargentiana', Choisya 'Sundance', Robinia 'Frisia', Impatiens omiena and lots of variegated plants. The fragrance of lily and star jasmine, the blooms of eryngium, fuchsia, helenium and phlox makes for a great summer evening. This garden is the hidden gem in Hazelwood. 4 Season Garden This 10-year-old Asian-inspired garden was featured on 2016 ANLD Garden Tour. It was also featured on the cover of Winter 2016 Great Gardens book and the February 2017 issue of Garden Gate magazine. When we moved into our home in 2003, the landscape was bleak. Helena's vision of a tranquil Asian-inspired retreat and her passion for plants guided the design of the garden and hardscape choices. Using bold structures and diverse plantings, an inviting and restful courtyard was created in the front garden in 2012. A 80 harmonious backyard showcases a lush Asian garden with layered plant combinations juxtaposing color, texture, and form. Edibles and ornamentals are integrated throughout the landscape. There are a variety of stone lanterns, garden art, and wooden structures. Garden rooms are connected by a meandering gravel path leading to a sitting area and water feature. We invite you to come and stroll through the garden. Feast your eyes. Sit and enjoy vignettes, and delight yourself in its unique artistry. This collector's garden is on a 7,000 sq. ft. flat lot. Over the past 16 years, it has gone from a brand-new garden with a lawn and smaller gardening beds to one without any lawn and larger beds. Emphasis has been on unusual plants, as well as show-stopping podophyllums and clematis. Several trees have been removed in the past few years, thus new beds. If you want to see certain plants or groups of plants in bloom, please call and leave a message about them and your phone number or e-mail. I will then call you back when they are in bloom. Concrete Jungle: A Rather Bookish Garden This garden is inhabited by more than fairies; there are also pirates, a hobbit farm and other literary references. The .32 acre yard is a fairly steep slope, with a lot of stairs, and is patrolled by a pair of big friendly dogs, a black cat and a guinea fowl. Over the last 10 years my husband has taken out most of the junipers and ivy and I've replaced them with fruit trees, perennials, shrubs and raised veggie beds. Favorite categories include edibles, colored foliage and odd-looking or not-pretty plants, sorted into themed garden beds. I love warmer weather plants, so fingers crossed that the cannas, bananas and gingers reappear! Wheelchair accessibility: No

Creekside Cottage Garden Step back into history and into the country when visiting Creekside Cottage Garden. The cottage, framed by the garden, was built in 1930, and although just minutes off I-5, it is located on a large lot with a creek and beautiful large trees. There are 60+ clematis and all their friends, including roses, hardy geraniums, irises of many types, and lots and lots of lilies. In June, clematis, early perennials and lilies are the stars. THERE ARE EVEN MORE CHANGES TO MY GARDENS FROM LAST YEAR!! The two ponds we added last year are now completed with plants and fish that love the fresh water, more beds and a windmill. I also did a lot of "remodeling" thanks to the rather harsh winter this year. There are still many planting areas that are all tied together by moss-covered walls that I built out of "native" rocks. All of the gardens, which are mostly in filtered shade, can be reached by winding paths or unusual steps. Included are large collections of ferns, hostas, container plantings, annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. Relax on a bench, stroll along the paths or sit at one of the patios, including our original falls and pond. Also look for lots of garden art and other treasures collected over time that seem to increase every month. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, but only a small part of it
