  • Descent of St. Maur and Seymour Families
-390- ST MAUR AND SEYMOUR DESCENT OF ST.MAUR FAMILY OF CO.MONMOUTH AND SEYMOUR FAMILY OF HATCH, CO.SOMERSET by Paul C. Reed1 ABSTRACT This Seymour family became renowned in the person of Jane Seymour, who died twelve days after the birth of Edward, the only legitimate son of Henry VIII to survive infancy. It is not surprising that the origins of this family came under the focus of the earliest English historians and genealogists, including Camden, Dugdale and Vincent. Brydges and others later attempted fuller accounts in their works on the peerage, but the paucity of surviving records has allowed errant conclusions and fictions to persist in the most widely available modern accounts. The purpose of this article is to present a fresh analysis of what survives and bring the subject up to current standards of scholarship. Foundations (2008) 2 (6): 390-442 © Copyright FMG and the author As is the case with so many medieval English families, our knowledge of the earliest generations of the Seymours in the century and a half after Domesday is vague and uncertain. The earliest definitely traceable ancestor appears in record because of his acquisition of land—he burst onto the scene through conquest. In a period when preserving the king’s peace would normally have forbad dispossessing anyone of a manor (whether they had been in legitimate possession or not), at this specific time it furthered the interests of the crown to have Englishmen displace the native Welsh. Even after the family acquired heritable land, the descent of the male line through the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries is not entirely certain because of the scant survival of documents concerning manors and lands in the Marches of Wales.

  • George Owen (1602-3)
Lords of Pembrokeshire: an account up to the Tudors. From 'The Description of Pembrokeshire' By George Owen (1602-3) Editorial Introduction The Earldom of Pembroke 11th-12th Centuries Arnulph Montgomery Gerald of Windsor The Flemings Gilbert Strongbow Wars with the Welsh 13th Century The Earl Marshals The Munchensys 14th Century The Hastings 15th Century Jasper Tudor Editorial Introduction Those wishing to profit, agriculturally or ecologically, from Skomer have to interact with its rabbit-dominated base-line. This brings them into continuity with the social world of adventurers and entrepreneurs who developed the Norman colony which became known as Pembrokeshire. The first records of the island date from the 14th century. They are accounts of the Lordship of Haverford West, when the annual production of rabbit fur was a major source of its wealth. The rabbit is not indigenous to Britain and is first recorded as a product of the warrens which were imported with the Norman manorial system. There is no Welsh word for rabbit, although the hare is described as 'the long-eared one'. The following extracts from George Owen's work set the historical scene as it appeared to him as a local antiquary and landowner of North Pembrokeshire living in the sixteenth century. His description covers a wide range of topics such as topography, geology, agriculture.genealogy and the origins of divisions between communities. As a survey of the county it was typical of others initiated in other parts of Britain at that time which had the aim of increasing local agricultural and mineral productions. In this context, his description of the Pembrokeshire Islands are presented in the context of potential agricultural assets.

  • History of the Princes of South Wales
HISTORY OF THE BY THE REV. THE HON. GEORGE T. 0. BRIDGEMAN, M.A. PRINTED BY THOMAS BIRCH, 32, MILLGATE, WIGAN. 1876. MY DEAR As the following pages would never have been printed but for your encouragement and valuable assistance, I hope you will allow me to dedicate them to you. As you are aware, the subject was taken up by me many years ago when my time was more at my own disposal than it has been of late years. I have now availed myself of a short period of comparative rest to finish what I then began. My original purpose had been simply to identify the representation of certain princely families through the perplexing era of the Conquest of Wales, and, as far as I could, to rectify sundry errors with respect to their descent. In the course of time, however, I found myself possessed of a considerable number of original deeds bearing upon their earlier history and carrying me back to the time of their greater power when they ruled their respective dominions as indepen- dent sovereigns. This caused me to study Welsh history more closely, and induced me to trace their chequered fortunes through a longer period. In so doing I have endeavoured to separate the history of that portion of South Wales in which their territories lay from the general history of the Principality. During the earlier part of the narrative my information has been mostly taken from the Brut-y- Tywysogion or Chronicle of the British Princes, verified and supple- mented by the accounts of such contemporary writers as treated of Wales and the Borders.

  • The Conquest of Ireland
Giraldus Cambrensis The Conquest of Ireland translated by Thomas Forester Revised and Edited with additional notes by Thomas Wright In parentheses Publications Medieval Latin Series Cambridge, Ontario 2001 The AuthorÕs First Preface. Forasmuch as in my Topography of Ireland I have described at large the site of the island, its singularities, and those of sundry things contained in it, the marvels in which nature has there indulged out of her ordinary course, and the origin of the various races settled in it from the earliest ages until these our own days, I have now undertaken, at the earnest request of many persons of high rank, to set forth in a separate volume the annals of events which have occurred in our own days relating to the last and recent conquest of Ireland. For if I have been able to give a tolerably clear account of times long past, and of things which happened in ages so far preceding our own, how much more exact will be my narrative of transactions which have taken place under my own observation, of the greatest part of which I have been an eye-witness, and which are so fresh in my memory that I cannot have any doubt about them. The Topography treats of localities and events connected with ancient times, the History deals with the present. But methinks I see some one turn up his nose, and, disgusted with my book, hand it to another, or throw it aside, because the reader will find all things in it plain, clear, and easy of apprehension.
